Re: OT: Scary responsibility in job ad

2011-10-06 Thread Laura Lemay

Yeah, I've seen that job ad.

I've had a couple of jobs in the past where coaching engineers on writing was
one of the key responsibilities. In each of those jobs there was substantial
confusion over whether the technical writing task was owned by the writers or
by the engineers (and the writers were just there to pretty up what the
engineers wrote.) In those jobs there were always many pointless battles over
ownership that got in the way of actual writing.

I consider this kind of a thing a warning sign now. At the very least it is a
top 5 question for the interview if the job looks otherwise interesting.

Amusingly, Newton's defines landline as:

A terrestrial circuit, whether wired (i.e. twisted pair, coax, or
fiber), or wireless (i.e.microwave or some other form of radio, or
free space optics), or some combination. A landline is different from
a satellite link, which is not terrestrial in nature.

If I'm reading that right, a mobile phone is technically a landline.

Re: Monitor issue

After four years of operation, my Dell monitor, Model D1626HT just
went
south. So if I may, I'd like to solicit your thoughts on a high
quality

20 monitor that won't bankrupt my resources. Are today's LCD monitors
in the $350-$500 price range up to the task, or does one have to spend
over $1000 for equivalent results?

Nearly every design geek I know is buying Dell LCDs. I have two -- a
20 square and a 24 widescreen -- and they are amazing.

As you price shop make sure you check cheap stingy bargains for
current Dell coupons. You can get a LOT of money off a dell monitor
with a coupon (and often free shipping). For example, the 20
widescreen is $391 right now. The 24 widescreen is $703.

It still works the same way.

In Classic under OS 10.4, however, I'm seeing this grayed out. It
won't let me up the memory.

Re: Carrying the Title of a Book forward [was Variables]

I've always implemented that solution with a single extra file for the
book (bookvariables.fm) that contains nothing except variable
definitions. When variables change or get added I import all the
variables from that file at the book level.
