[Framers] Hyphens when going from FM to Acrobat

2018-02-23 Thread Lynn Gold
My company is using FrameMaker 10 and Acrobat Distiller Professional 10.1.1613.
When there are hyphens in a string, they appear in the generated text, but if
you go to search on them or copy the hyphenated strings, the hyphens are not
recognized as being there. For example, if I search for "rest-client" I get
nothing, but the "rest-client" string shows up if I search for "restclient".
Similarly, if I copy the phrase "rest-client" from the PDF and paste it into an
editor, the output is "restclient".

Is there a fix for this?

Thanks,

Typing adobemailers.com<mailto:techc...@adobemailers.com> takes you right to

[Framers] Counting words in a FrameMaker book

2016-01-09 Thread Lynn Gold
We have book files with over 30 chapters that we need to process for
translation. We know how to get the words for each file, but is there something
out there that will take a book file and count the number of words? I know the
late Bruce Foster wrote something that did this, but he's been dead for 4.5
years and I couldn't find a downloadable version of it anywhere on the Internet.

FrameMaker, PDFs, and accessibility

2013-09-12 Thread Lynn Gold
I need to make accessible PDFs. I'm using FM 10.

There are two things I need to do:

1. Have each heading be tagged "en-us".
2. Have ALT tags for each graphics.

The second item we've figured out (the Graphics->Options item), but how do

we do #1?

FrameMaker - online help solution

2012-11-28 Thread Lynn Gold
I have a bunch of FrameMaker 7 files that currently go through WebWorks
2003 to get turned into online help.

One of the sticking points of moving them to the current version of
FrameMaker is getting an online help solution that will work with special
marker tags that we've added to tell WebWorks 2003 where to break pages.

We aren't sure whether to go with RoboHelp, WebWorks ePublisher, or
something else altogether. Any opinions? With an already overloaded
group that's about to get smaller, we need a quick and (relatively) easy
solution, preferably one that doesn't require us to do anything special to
the FM files beyond moving them to the current version.

Re: Support needed!

2012-07-11 Thread Lynn Gold
Your situation reminds me of the place I worked where the CEO's wife
complained, Can't you come up with a solution that involves Microsoft
products?

Nonetheless, I was in a situation with more reasonable management that I
managed to convince. I did it by listing what I needed to do that I
couldn't do in MS Word:
. Conditional text
. Large files (MS Word has memory management problems)
. Numbered lists (MS Word has bugs that limit the number of such lists you
can have)
. Flexible variables (you can set them at once from an external file in
FrameMaker, while MS Word doesn't have this capability)
. Customization that doesn't make you vulnerable to viruses (the #1 way
computers get infected via MS Word is through its macros)

The final selling point was a file I found on the Internet that showed
Microsoft Press using FrameMaker. I was able to say Even *Microsoft*
doesn't use Word for creating books!

The word flexible in this person's message is also clearly a euphemism
for either cheaper, one that the rest of the idiots here know, or one
that runs in native mode on my Mac.

Are there any other tech writers in the company that acquired you? If so,
find out what they use. If someone else is using FrameMaker, you've got a
better defense. If you're the only one using it, you may be screwed.

Good luck,

 Dear all

Please tell me I'm not going mad or being unreasonable.

Have just come into work to find that the company which acquired us a
few months ago wants me to use Powerpoint for creating datasheets
instead of InDesign (definite) and a more flexible tool (Word) instead
 of our beloved Framemaker (proposed).

I could cry. I am the only tech author in the company of about 100
people and the marketing department used PP for datasheets which they
say is adequate for the job. This all arose on Friday when someone
else needed to edit a version of my ID files when I was on holiday. Now
 I come in to find:

...For more technical documentation (e.g. product manuals) then I
understand the argument for use of a more specialist tool - but even
here we can use more flexible tools.

Such as? I have long user guides with masses of conditional text.
Just let Word have a shot at that. In fact, they were trying to do just
that before I started this job 4 years ago - and it wasn't working.

Sorry to clog up the forum with this but I think of you all as friends
who feel the same way about FM as I do.

How do I persuade them otherwise? In fact, it's just one person really
I think I need to convince - not in my office.

I can just about cope with datasheets in PP but using anything other
than Frame for long user guides is unthinkable.

Hi Lisa,

Try this: after you wrap a few elements, choose File > Import > Element
Definitions. Check the Format Rule Overrides checkbox and click Import.
Does that give you the correct formatting for each element? Thanks.

Subject: Unstructured to Structured: Question about retaining paragraph
formats

Hello All,

FM10 ? We are converting an unstructured Frame file to Structured. Due to
unfortunate circumstances, we are not able to use a conversion table
(sigh).

The issue is that during the hand tagging of this file, we have to wrap
the text in the element tags in para tags to match the schema. When we
wrap the text, we lose the paragraph?s formatting properties. Everything
turns to ?body? and we have to reapply the format.

We are able to manipulate the EDD somewhat but can?t stray from the
structure. We?ve looked at Read\Write rules but they don?t appear to help
in this case. We?ve also looked at using the ?TextFormatRules,
ElementPgfFormatTag? options but we have more than one paragraph style
that goes to an individual element.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

BTW, everything works great when a new document is created using the
template, EDD, etc.

Thank you in advance!

Lisa Freeman

Hi Framers,

I hesitate to put this on the list, but I have been around the FrameMaker
community for a long time, and this is the only contact I have with some
of
you. Also, in light of Bruce Foster's sudden disappearance last year, I
thought it would be appropriate to post this.

Hi Everyone,

As many of you know, I was supposed to be on vacation this week, cycling
across New York State with 17 other guys. During my last few training
rides,
I experienced some discomfort in my chest. It was a concern because I am
in
pretty good shape with almost 800 miles on the bike so far this summer. I
had a stress test on Friday, and the results showed an 80% chance of a
blockage in one of my cardiac arteries. Monday I went into the hospital
for
an angiogram, with the anticipation of having the blockage opened and a
stent put in. However, the test showed a couple of areas of blockage, one
being in an area that can't be opened with a stent. So on Wednesday around
12:45 pm, I am going to have open heart surgery with at least a double
bypass. I will be in the hospital for 3-5 days and hopefully experience a
quick recovery at home. I should be back to work late next week.

Those of you who know me well understand that I have a deep abiding
relationship with Jesus Christ. I received Him as my Savior on April 6,
1984
when I was twenty-five years old. Because He has forgiven me of my sins, I
know that when I die, I will be with Him in heaven. I am still a sinner
and
don't deserve heaven, but because of His death on the cross and subsequent
resurrection, He gives eternal life to those who receive Him by faith.

That said, I am still fairly young (53), and have some young kids left to
raise. So, if you are given to prayer, please pray for Sherry and I this
Wednesday. Finally, thank you all for being a part of my life. The great
people that I work with is an important part of making my work so
satisfying.

Sincerely,
Rick

OT: Unexpected event

2012-06-21 Thread Lynn Gold
By the time you see this, I hope you're out of the hospital and doing
well.

I'm glad you caught this problem quickly before it caught you.

The great
people that I work with is an important part of making my work so
satisfying.

Sincerely,
Rick

Re: Ventura encoded text files

2012-04-24 Thread Lynn Gold
When I had to do this I used Maker Markup Language. I ran a few Emacs
macros over the file and it converted easily. One of the things to watch
out for is VP and FM use colons and semicolons in Index markers the
opposite way, so when replacing strings you have to make an intermediary
step of replacing one of those to some random text string not likely to
appear in your book. To wit:

1. Replace : with murgatroyd.
2. Replace ; with :.
3. Replace murgatroyd wtih ;.

I have a number of text files that came from Ventura Publisher that look

@BOOK = T-4

@BOOK = T-19
@REF =   III.6:6

@BOOK = T-25
@REF =   VI.2:3

(This is just a random example.)

I have Ventura Publisher 10 and it does not read them properly (although I
am far from a VP expert--I tried the open and import menus).
The client has Frame 6; I have Frame 8-10 on my system, but can install 7
on
an older system.
I know early versions of Frame has a Ventura import feature, but I don't
know if it will work with these files.

Is there any way to work with these files? Third-party program suggestions
are welcome too.

My only other thought is some GREP Find/Change work.

Thank you in advance,

Getting graphics out of a file

I have a bunch of FrameMaker files with embedded graphics that have been

Anchored Frame/Pagination bug?

2012-01-10 Thread Lynn Gold
I'm using FrameMaker 10. In several chapters I have a Figure Title tag
containing an Anchored Frame set to anchor Below the Current Line and
Left.

When the Anchored Frame is larger than the amount of space left on the
page, instead of putting the frame below the text on the next page, FM 10
puts the Figure Title on one page and the Anchored Frame on the next page.

Using Keep with next paragraph on the Figure Title paragraph has no
effect; it still remains on the previous page.

Have I found a bug, or is there something I need to be doing differently?

Thanks,

The post was:
A local company listed this as one of the responsibilities in a job ad for

coach engineers to improve their writing skills

It makes me laugh and cringe in equal measures.

My reply is:
How often do you complain that engineers don't like to give you the

Hi Lynn,

FrameMaker 10 allows you to put a background color behind text. All
versions allow you to apply an overline and underline to text (or a
cross-reference). There is no way to do a box with stock FrameMaker. If
your deliverable is PDF, you could convert the cross-reference links to
box-style links in Acrobat, although I am not sure it can be done
globally. TimeSavers (www.microtype.com) may provide a way to do this
automatically when the PDF is created.

This could be done with FrameScript, so if you are interested in this
approach, please contact me offlist. Thanks.

Subject: Cross-references and formats

Is there a way to create a cross-reference (or character) format that puts
a colored box around the cross-reference?

Thanks,
