Random links in pdf don't work, but only on RHEL 5

2013-01-17 Thread Martha Lee
Hi All,

I have TCS 2.5, which I use to create a large documentation set that
includes several manuals. I created a pdf that acts as the documentation
set overview, and it has links (cross-references in the source FM file) to
major topics in each of the manuals. When I open the pdf on a Windows 7 64
bit OS, all the links in this pdf work correctly. When I open the same pdf
on a RHEL 5 64 bit OS, some of the links work, and some of them don't. I
have tried recreating the cross-references in FrameMaker, and that actually
did get rid of some of the broken links. But I still have a pesky few that
I can't get to work. When I say they don't work, I mean when you click on
them, nothing happens. I'm using Acrobat Reader 9.5.3 on RHEL5 and Reader X
on Windows. Any ideas as to why a link would work on Windows but not RHEL5?

Thanks for your help.

OmniHelp files do not display Symbol fonts properly in IE

2012-06-26 Thread Martha Lee
Hi All,

I'm using FM 9 and Mif2Go package 33, revision 53. I'm outputting OmniHelp.
Everything looks fine in Mozilla Firefox, but in Internet Explorer, random
symbol font letters do not display correctly. For example, the Greek
letters sigma and phi displays in the correct Symbol font, but theta and
psi display as question marks. This letters are all created the same way.
Any ideas why in IE some letters would display properly and others wouldn't?

Thanks.

OmniHelp with Google Chrome

2011-01-12 Thread Martha Lee
Hi All,

Our Mif2Go OmniHelp files fail to load in Google Chrome. I realize that we
need an ohct_.css file for Google Chrome. Anyone know if that file is
available? And would I need any other updated file to open OmniHelp in
Chrome?

I'm on digest, so please cc me on any response.

FrameMaker and RoboHelp

2010-11-01 Thread Martha Lee
Hi All,

I'm looking for some resources to learn how to use RoboHelp with FrameMaker.
I have Technical Communication Suite 2.0, and I can't find any tutorials
about how to use these two programs together. The online help for Robohelp
doesn't include any kind of tutorial, and even more disappointing, the
online help for RoboHelp is not context sensitive. I have been trying to
link a FrameMaker book, but I only get one file out of 8 to show up when I
try to generate WebHelp.

I found a link on the Web for a demo by RJ Jacquez
(http://rjacquez.com/linking_framemaker_9_books_in/), but every time I try
to play it, a second instance starts a few seconds after the first one, so I
get two presentations playing at once, but out of sync.

Don't know if it's relevant, but I'm running Win XP64 with 8 GB of RAM, dual
processors, 3.2 GHz each.

I'd be very grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks.

Try making a book with two copies of your short test case; does
that work? We import the conversion template to each file
individually, because you may want to use different templates
for different files.

Are the xrefs that are not working as desired to targets in
the same file, or in different files? Maybe the problem is
that when you convert one file and update xrefs, the *other*
files in the book are not using the modified numbering formats,
so you get what they *are* using, the old one. In that case,
you will need to change your workflow a little:

1. Copy the Frame book and chapter files to another dir as
a backup.

2. Manually import the conversion template to the whole book,
and manually update xrefs from the book. Remove the reference
to the conversion template from your mif2htm.ini.

3. Run the conversion.

4. Copy the backup files back over the working set to restore
your numbering for other uses.

So if I only have one file in my book file, doesn't matter which,
the x-refs are updated correctly, but if I have more than one file,
the x-refs are not updated correctly. Any suggestions?

See if that works. We haven't run into this before because
you are the first we know of to change the content the xref
is getting in the other files as part of conversion. Most
people just change the xref format, and that works fine. I
suspect this issue is because you're changing the numbering
properties too.

By the way, I'm on digest, so please cc me in any response.

works as it did in my previous versions of FM and Mif2Go.

Good...

But the cross references to these tables and figures do not update
correctly.
Cross references to figures keep the N-N format even though the figure no
longer has that format, and cross references to tables simply disappear. I
do get a warning during the OmniHelp generation that cross references are
not
updating properly. I didn't have this problem with my previous versions of
FM and Mif2Go, and I don't know what to do about it. Any suggestions?

See if the update after the import is working correctly. We
use an FDK call that should always do that:
F_ApiUpdateXRefs(docId, (IntT) (FF_XRUI_EVERYTHING |
FF_XRUI_FORCE_UPDATE));
And if we get a failure response, we put up an alert dialog.
But it's possible that FM9 broke something there, as it does
in so many other places... :-( So check it manually:

1. Make a backup copy of your current chapter files elsewhere.
2. Open the book, and manually import the template.
2. Update all xrefs using the menu command.
4. See if they really changed. If not, you've found an FM9 bug.
   Consider going to FM8 instead; it actually works.
5. Close Frame and copy your backup files over the ones you changed.

If you see correct updating manually, but not when using Mif2Go,
we'll need a test case, as described in Appendix D:  a one-page
chapter file that shows the problem. Just trim one of yours
down; it really must be that small for this purpose. Include
the .fm, .prj, conversion template, all .inis, the MIF (very
important!), and all output files, all in one .zip. Then we
can diagnose the cause and hopefully fix it, FM9 permitting.

And if it's relevant, I'm running Windows XP64.

Make sure you installed the conversion DLLs and exes that
normally go into \windows\system32 into \windows\SysWOW64
instead. We mention this on the download page, but recheck.

  My first guess would be that your FM 9 may not be fully patched. There
were a number of issues related to graphics files addressed in the three
patches that have been released over the last year or so:

  Obviously the line shows up on screen, but does it also show in hard copy,

RE: graphics have random lines

2010-04-16 Thread Martha Lee
Hi All,

The latest patch from Adobe fixed this problem. Good riddance to a problem
that has been plaguing me for quite some time. Thanks to all for your help.

  OK, be sure you're fully patched then. As mentioned, the patches addressed
some graphics handling; the right lines may have been one of the bugs
resolved, but I didn't have that issue so I can't swear to it.

  My first guess would be that your FM 9 may not be fully patched. There
were a number of issues related to graphics files addressed in the three
patches that have been released over the last year or so:

  Obviously the line shows up on screen, but does it also show in hard

RE: Mif2Go graphics question

2009-09-14 Thread Martha Lee
Art,

This is the Mif2Go output directory,and the html files are being created and
put in the output directory and then the wrap directory. So if the problem
was the Read-only attribute, wouldn't also prevent the html files from being
placed in that directory?

Also, if I right click on any folder in my C drive and select Properties, it
has the Read-only option selected for that folder. Even those folders that I
created and to which I can add or delete files. And if I unset that
attribute, it doesn't stay unset.

Hi Martha,

Yes, that's what I'm asking about. If a directory's permissions are
set to read-only, as yours seem to be, a process or user isn't
supposed to be able to create files in that directory.

I'd follow the directory tree upwards to find the starting point for
the read-only setting, then change the properties to allow files to be
created. You should get a prompt asking if you want to apply it to
that directory or all files and sub-directories -- which you do want
to do.

RE: Mif2Go graphics question

2009-09-14 Thread Martha Lee
Art et al,

The problem seems to be that Mif2Go is quite happy putting any file it
creates or any file that is already in the Output directory in the wrap
directory. But it is not executing the CopyGraphicsFrom setting I have in
the mif2htm.ini file. I removed the problematic plus sign from the directory
names, and that didn't solve my problem. I can write, copy and paste to the
graphics directory and to the Mif2Go output and wrap directories. But for
some reason, Mif2Go will not copy the graphic files from the specified
directory to the wrap directory. If I execute the copy command from the
command line, it works, but the automated process doesn't.

Anybody had this problem? Sorry for taking up so much of the list bandwidth,
but this is driving me crazy.

Thanks.

Martha

Martha,

I don't _know_ that this is the problem -- I just suggested that you
check it because incorrect permissions have the potential to screw
things up. I agree with your logic that it seems as if a Read Only
setting should prevent creation of HTML files in those directories,
but I have also learned that it's dangerous to apply logic to computer
operations. ;-  )

If the permissions are being re-set, you may not be going high enough
up the directory tree when you change permissions. If a parent
directory is set to read-only, the child directories under it usually
inherit that setting. So I'd walk back up the directory tree to ensure
that you're getting the parent directory and change the permissions
there.

Try running the *full* command, with the part containing the plus,
and see what happens:

[all in one line]
copy /Y "C:\rep\documentation\trunk\MEMSplus\*.jpg"
C:\rep\documentation\trunk\MEMS+OmniHelp\MEMSplus

That is what we run, I'll bet that it does *not* copy the files.
If you really remove the plus from the directory name, it will.

In the copy command, "+" means to concatenate the file before
the plus with the file after the plus.

Mif2Go graphics question

I'd follow the directory tree upwards to find the starting point for
the read-only setting, then change the properties to allow files to be
created. You should get a prompt asking if you want to apply it to
that directory or all files and sub-directories -- which you do want
to do.

Mif2Go graphics question

So I'd walk back up the directory tree to ensure
that you're getting the parent directory and change the permissions
there.

No, I wouldn't expect it to, since they are different actual locations.

  C:\rep\documentation\trunk\MEMS+OmniHelp\MEMSplus

Why would that be a problem? Because + has a meaning to the

This setup says that you really have the .gif and .png graphics already in
existence, and they are located at C:\rep\documentation\trunk\MEMSplus.
Is that correct? That's not the *same* MEMSplus dir you are referencing
as the wrap and ship dirs, is it? I can't tell because you didn't say
where you were running this from. It shouldn't be, or you'd be saying
to copy them to themselves, which does nothing (and is in fact ignored,
we check for that).

Also, it's better to have the wrap and ship dirs separate. For
OmniHelp, you typically run an ArchiveCommand to .zip the results
in wrap, and then we move that zip to ship. Many projects can
share the same ship; it makes distribution much easier if they do.

If you actually want graphics generated (which is poorer quality, if
you already have them available), as David thinks, you'd need to set
[Graphics]UseGraphicPreviews=Yes.

Also, if you use StripGraphPath=No, and don't set a GraphPath, you
are saying to preserve the original paths from the Frame files.
Those are unlikely to work. If you are putting the graphics in
the same dir as the HTML, you definitely want StripGraphPath=Yes.

[Graphics]UseGraphicPreviews=Yes.

Also, if you use StripGraphPath=No, and don't set a GraphPath, you
are saying to preserve the original paths from the Frame files.
Those are unlikely to work. If you are putting the graphics in
the same dir as the HTML, you definitely want StripGraphPath=Yes.

HTH!

Mif2Go graphics question

2009-09-09 Thread Martha Lee
Hi All,

I'm using Mif2Go to generate OmniHelp. I'm trying to copy my referenced
graphics into the distribution directory. My mif2htm.ini has these settings:

[FDK]
WriteEquations=Yes
WriteAllGraphics=No

[Automation]
WrapAndShip=Yes
WrapPath=.\MEMSplus
ShipPath=.\MEMSplus
CopyGraphicsFrom=C:\rep\documentation\trunk\MEMSplus
GraphCopyFiles= *.gif *.png

[Graphics]
UseGraphicPreviews=No
StripGraphPath=No
UseOriginalGraphicNames=Yes

The graphics are not written to the wrap directory so all the graphics are
missing from the final htm output. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Paragraph format not converting correctly

2009-09-08 Thread Martha Lee
Hi All,

I'm using Mif2Go 3.3 and FrameMaker 7 to produce OmniHelp. I have a
conversion template to map paragraph formats. The output is fine except for
one paragraph format; the text for that format is too big. I've checked the
conversion template, and the format is correct. Anyone know of a reason why
a particular format would come out a different font size in OmniHelp?

Thanks.

Mif2Go SmartSplit function

2009-07-29 Thread Martha Lee
Hi All,

I'm using FrameMaker 7.2 and Mif2Go 3.3 to generate OmniHelp. I tried to
invoke the SmartSplit command under [HTMLOptions] to prevent dangling
headings (section title appears all by itself), but it's not working. Most
likely I've got two conflicting settings, but I can't figure out what it
might be. Here's the relevant part of my .ini file:

[HelpContentsLevels]
; Fill in FM head para formats and their level here
Section Title=1
Title=2
Title_top=2
Heading 1=3
Heading 1top=3
Heading 2=4
Heading 2top=4

[HtmlStyles]
Notes=NoSplit
Title=Split
Title_top=Split
Heading 1=Split
Heading 1top=Split
Section Title=Title Trail

[HTMLOptions]
ObjectIDs=All
FileSuffix=.htm
NoFonts=Yes
AlignAttributes=No
AllowOverrides=No
StartingSplit=No
SmartSplit=Yes

SmartSplit works for the Title/Heading 1 combination, but not for the
Section Title/Title combination. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

opening program files from an html file

2009-07-23 Thread Martha Lee
Hi All,

Im using FrameMaker 7.2 and Mif2Go to generate html files that the
developers are going to display within a pane in our software interface.
They've asked me to embed a file link in the html file so that when the user
clicks on that link, it opens the specified file in our software. The file
formats are unique to our software. Any ideas on how to do this?

Thanks for your help.

Bug in FrameMaker 7.2 conditionals?

2007-11-05 Thread Martha Lee
Hi Diane,

I have seen this problem too. And my docs only have about four different
conditional text formats.

work, as the differences are too embedded in the product. As a result, I
have 35 conditionals (don't ask!) sprinkled liberally throughout the
majority of my files.

With the recent additional of new conditionals, I have noticed a
phenomenon where I add some new text in a sentence and make it
conditional, but suddenly other hidden conditionals start displaying as
well. To hide them, I have to keep selecting them and clicking "Apply,"
or I have to select "Show All, and then "Show" to display only the
specified conditionals.

Is this a bug? Does FrameMaker only handle a certain number of
conditionals gracefully? Is there something else I should know?

TIA,

Diane
