Re: Translations or Localisation of Framemaker content

Dianne's right. You do need an LSP. A couple of quick things to look for as you
vet providers:

1. Do they use only professional translators? ATA certified or LISA
2. Do they use only mother tongue translators living in the target country?
3. Are their editors and proofreaders professional translators, mother tongue,
living in target country?
4. Do they have access to translators with a technical background in your
industry, if necessary.

Sorry so disjointed, dashed this quickly before a meeting...

I'll add our company's contact to your list:

Ed Laprath

Good luck,

Re: Handling Large FrameMaker Books

2009-02-04 Thread bryan johnson
adding to Pappy's response... i've noticed Frame doesn't like it when you bury
files within multiple sub-folders. (i.e. C:\Documents and Settings\me\My
Documents\2009\Projects\Newstuff\sourcefiles\dtpfiles\framemakerfiles\morestuff\maybenow\not
 yet\almost there\here we go\file.fm

try unburying...

 Pappy mrbass...@gmail.com 2/4/2009 11:25 AM
I am working on a 650-page document in unstructured FrameMaker 8. Due to the
size of the document, its incredibly difficult for FrameMaker to execute
book-wide commands, such as performing an update or generating the TOC.
I have thought about splitting the document into two different books, but I
need one integrated TOC.

Does anyone have any suggestions that would make executing book-wide
commands with a book this size easier?

Are you opening all the files in the book before you do the book-wide commands?

650 pages isn't all that big. We have Frame book files that are nearly 3000
pages.

Re: Networking in the NYMetro area.

John,

If I may suggest, you may want to join Linkedin and start a local NY metro
group. It's a great way to network and the individual groups can include
calendars and such to help facilitate more focused, in person, networking.

Doubt I'd be of much help to you, as I'm in Ohio, but i'd be happy to include
you in my network.

Hi, guys...hope this isn't out of line for this list, but at times
like these when everyone says network, network, netwiork, I'd like to
reach out to the writers in the NY metro area.

Some of us are out of work and looking, and some of you are working
and trying to stay that way. I'd like to start a club that will
meet in person for the purpose of finding/keeping/referring jobs.
Maybe we can compare notes, maybe help each other critique each
other's resumes and portfolios, pasing along opportunities for
freelance work that may not be a fit for you but good for someone
esle, yada yada.

It's gotta be better than just sitting home, responding to Dice, and
otherwise, contemplating our navels.

What do you think? If there is enough interest, I can start up a Yahoo
group just for this purpose and figure out scheduling for getting
together maybe every 2 weeks? This is open to both those who are in
positions and those who are not. Besides...what better way to meet
socially and since it is job-search related, mostly tax deductable
(but that's between you and your accountant)

Respond off-list please and for the purpose I'm describing, please be
in the NY metro area..

As far as I know, both Boeing and Tedopres will let you evaluate
their ASD-STE100 checkers before buying... Or, at the very least,
will send someone over to demo it in person. Have you contacted
them?
