This link should get you to a dropdown list of install options,
including Reader 11. Don't be alarmed, the first pane says "Reader
DC" but until they get around to breaking this, 11 is an option on the
#3 dropdown list as you step through the selection process. (I spot-
checked on various Windows and Mac OS listings, using English as the
language.)

Remove DC first, then install 11. This install works quickly and
easily (imagine that). The irritation, though, is that I've lost all
the little config tweaks done to 11 prior to the previous DC
hijacking, not to mention the history stack.

I despise the Acrobat "DC" programs and have adamantly refused to
upgrade Acrobat Pro 11 to the "DC" version at work - although I seem
to be stuck with it at home.

I'm really tired of companies reworking their programs so they're
"new and improved" - are you listening Adobe and Microsoft?

Yes, it's rare that such reworks are an improvement. It does happen,
but not often.

Generally that means they *look* cool (or what some dork thinks is
cool) but they're actually massive steps backward in productivity as
they keep driving us back to the mouse and away from shortcut keys.

Amen. And it often goes deeper than that, subtle little things where
that same "dork" is clueless about use. One of the ongoing irritations
with windows is that substring matches no longer fully work in file
name searches. Why on earth would they break that? Sigh.

That's why I recently noted InDesign's Quick Apply (QA) feature on this
list in response to the mention of a new FM menu command feature that I
can't see because I'm not using recent FM releases. QA brings up a
keystroke-aware menu from which users can invoke almost every menu item,
option, script, named paragraph and character format, and more. It would be
great if Adobe would put this technology into all products. Back in the old
days (like around the time that Frank was probably working on IXgen
prototypes ) I remember learning Lotus 123's menus and options by
reciting aloud the keystroke that were the initials of the layers of the
menu sequences needed to get down to the intended command. QA is the same
kind of learning - the name of the thing itself, period.

Re: [Framers] OT: Stopping Adobe's auto install of Reader DC

2017-03-01 Thread Craig, Alison
I can see Reader being used a lot on mobile devices, not so much with
Acrobat/Acrobat Pro.

As for shortcut keys, I love them as well. But every time a program is
redesigned, the shortcut keys seem to change - or even worse, *some* keys
change - so you have to learn them all over again.

I think part of the issue is the tablet/mobile where the keyboard is going
away. I *love* shortcut keys and use them all the time. WAY more productive.
I put them into training, demo videos, etc.

It's not just Adobe/Microsoft either. Far too many companies are doing this
at the expense of the desktop. They need to consider the audience. I'd love
to know how many people use Adobe tools on a tablet vs a device that has a
keyboard.

This is getting insane. Four times now, behind my back, Adobe has "upgraded"
Reader 11 to DC. NO updating controls than I can find are set to auto.
They're either set to "ask before updating" or disabled.

I keep removing DC and reinstalling 11 (you'd think Adobe would get the
message), but like a bad horror movie, the DC monster keeps coming back.

Am I missing an update control somewhere? (Win7 Pro, SP1)

I recall seeing some apps designed to block Adobe from doing this, but it
seems ludicrous to have to do that (and who knows what's lurking in those
apps).

Any suggestions?
