Tammy,
I've found Win10 to be the most reliable and trouble-free version of Windows. I
currently use it for all development work and that includes FrameMaker 10, 11,
12 2015 and 2017. So far no probe to report. Functionality seems perfect with
everything doing what it should.

When I have to update an older project to run on a new OS or version of
FrameMaker, I make sure I have a reference set of PDF files and source
documents. After upgrading a set of templates or structured applications, I
compare the latest PDFs with the original reference PDF set using Acrobat to
get a visual report. The last time I found any difference was due to a change
of FDK client behaviour between FM9 and FM2015...

There are many people running older versions of FrameMaker on Windows 10.
Adobe introduced "official" support for Windows 10 in FrameMaker 2015, Update 1.
However, this only means, that Adobe has certified FM 2015, Update 1, for

there is no official support for running older versions on Windows 10.

Please note, that there are certain changes in Windows 10, that have or can

an impact on FrameMaker can be e.g. installation, rights management related
issues, fonts, font rendering, and printing.

Windows 10, generally, is not a big deal, once you get over the start menu
changes. Even that is not a major difference, really.

The biggest issue I've had with older versions of Frame is using a uHD
(ultra high res) monitor. The 2017 version finally works properly with my 4K
monitor (there was a hack with 2015, but it was not always reliable). For
older software, I keep a couple of 1080 monitors attached too.

Hi Tammy,

I guess you don't need too e too afraid of these issues. When you do a system
upgrade, especially when it's a bigger jump, the best practice is usually to do
a test on a separate instance. Generally speaking, this is just best practice
in IT.

Like most people, you will probably not face any issues.

However, I remember a support cases, where updating Windows from 7/8 to 10 had
an impact on their documents. As far as I remember, those issues were related
to a change in Windows in the "Uniscribe Unicode Script Processor" which had an
impact on how their OpenType fonts were rendered (having a small impact on line
breaks in the documents). Also it had an impact on PDF generation, (in Win 8
fonts in PDF were wrong, in Win 10 they were correct).

Hi All,

Thank you for the responses. Yes, from my extensive googling and pounding
through the forums, it does seem that FM 10 and 12 both run just fine on
Windows 10. And based on the statement that I pulled from HowToGeek, that would
make sense; however, as only FM2015 is explicitly called out as being
compatible with Win 10, I am understandingly a bit hesitant, but I probably
won't have a choice.

Carrier pigeon anyone?

Thanks!

That works fine, but I don't know about other functions in there.

All,

I might be forced to upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 Ultimate. (The
reasons are not important.) I have FM 10, FM 12 and Adobe Acrobat Pro XI
currently installed. Here is a comment that I found on HowToGeek's website:

*

Microsoft's Windows 10 seems like a big change. The version number alone is a
big leap from Windows 7, and most of the default apps are new-style "universal
apps," not traditional desktop apps.

But, if you depend on traditional Windows desktop applications, you shouldn't
worry. Don't let Windows 10's new look fool you - if an application ran on
Windows 7, it should also run on Windows 10.

*

But, is this true? Will FM 10 and 12 and Adobe Acrobat XI run on Windows 10?
(64-bit system). Have any of you had experience (good/bad/indifferent) running
these programs on Windows 10?

Thanks!

Ok Stefan,
These aren't trivial issues obviously and don't make me feel secure in my
decision at all.
I have had 3 responses saying that running Windows 10 w/ older versions of
Framemaker had not been an issue. Does anyone else on this list have experience
either way?
Thank you.

There are many people running older versions of FrameMaker on Windows 10.
Adobe introduced "official" support for Windows 10 in FrameMaker 2015, Update 1.
However, this only means, that Adobe has certified FM 2015, Update 1, for
Windows 10. Older versions are not certified for Windows 10, and therefore
there is no official support for running older versions on Windows 10.

Please note, that there are certain changes in Windows 10, that have or can
have an impact on FrameMaker depending on the use case. Areas where Windows has
an impact on FrameMaker can be e.g. installation, rights management related
issues, fonts, font rendering, and printing.

Re: [Framers] Windows 10 backwards compatibility?

2018-01-09 Thread Bernard Aschwanden
BTW, one other major thing for Windows 10: I run on a Microsoft Surface Book
with dual monitors. That alone is worth getting FM2017 as it allows dialogs
(and the software) to correctly size on the displays I use. That means that
when I move things from my 3000/2000 resolution tablet to a 1280 or 1024 or
whatever resolution other monitor, they size "right". So I don't end up
squinting at one and being bombarded by the size of the other.

If you DO move to Windows 10, AND you go with the high resolution it (and
computers that work with it) run, then explore 2017.

[Framers] Windows 10 backwards compatibility?

2018-01-08 Thread Tammy Van Boening

The version number alone is
a big leap from Windows 7, and most of the default apps are new-style
"universal apps," not traditional desktop apps.

But, if you depend on traditional Windows desktop applications, you
shouldn't worry. Don't let Windows 10's new look fool you - if an
application ran on Windows 7, it should also run on Windows 10.

*

But, is this true? Will FM 10 and 12 and Adobe Acrobat XI run on Windows 10?
(64-bit system). Have any of you had experience (good/bad/indifferent)
running these programs on Windows 10?

Thanks!

TVB
