If you're setup for backup saves...have you tried opening the
*.backup.fm?

Subject: Can't Open a FM File

Hi Framers,

FM 7.0p578
Windows XP Professional
512 MB RAM

I hope somebody can help me open this file. When I try to open it, FM
tells me I do not have enough memory. The file is a little under 2.7 MB,
and there are larger FM files in the book that FM does open. I've tried
closing everything and rebooting and then opening only that file, but I
get the same message.

There are a lot of graphics in the file, and I suspect that is the
problem. If I could just open the file to get the text back, I could
work around the graphics (split the chap into two maybe).

I've tried opening the file in Word, but it was garbage. I tried
converting it using a trial version of Mif2Go, but it converted all the
files in the book except the one I can't open. Also, I gave a copy to a
co-worker who has 1 GB of RAM, and he couldn't open it either.

Please, can somebody help? I put a lot of hard work into this chapter!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Can't Open a FM File

2005-12-08 Thread Peter Gold

Hi, Pearl:

It's more likely a corrupt file than a memory issue.

Have you tried the open heroic method? In FM, tap and rekease these
keys in sequence:

Escape
lowercase o
uppercase H

Then select the file in the Open dialog box. If it opens
successfully, save it immediately to a new name.

While on the subject of .backup files, it is important to note that
these are not real backups. All that happens is that whn you do
a Save, FrameMaker renames the last manually saved version of
the file with a second extension (.backup) rather than marking it
as an unused file that the OS can reallocate. In other words, the
backup file is always one save behind the real working file,
and the magnitude of the difference depends on how frequently
you remember to do manual saves.

Hi Dominick,

I do not reference my graphics, but this may be a good reason to do
so. Altho having the graphics in the files makes them larger, I also
thought it would be easier to manage the book without a directory of
graphics.

I'd be interested to hear from those of you who reference graphics
about how hard it is (or isn't) to keep track of the graphic files.

If it is hanging-up on a graphic, and you reference your graphics,
try
renaming the graphics folder. If the file is not corrupt, Frame
shouldopen the file and issue an error message.

Re: Can't Open a FM File

2005-12-08 Thread Dona Mommsen

Hi Pearl,

I once had a problem with a corrupted file, and there the heroic open
didn't help, but opening it while suppressing the automatic update of
references.

To open a document without updating references:
1. Choose FileĀ  Open, and select the file you want to open.
2. Do one of the following:
*   (Windows) Control-click Open.

Also, feel free to send me the file privately, I'll try if I'm able to
open it (using Frame on Mac).

I'm keeping my graphics in a separate directory and have absolutely no
problems with that.

Good luck.

Dona

Re: RE: Can't Open a FM File

2005-12-08 Thread John Posada
I'd be interested to hear from those of you who
reference graphics about how hard it is (or isn't)
to keep track of the graphic files.

Not hard at all. First, I have a two or three letter prefix for each
book (HRP, Pub, DM, CPF, etc.). That prefix is included in the name
of every file and every graphic. All my files go in one one directory
and all my graphics go in a subdirectory off that file directory.

The vast majority of my screen shots are of web pages or parts of web
pages since I'm documenting a large HR portal. I name my graphics
with three elements; the project name, then the header title of the
screen, then the state of the screen. Use an underscore between
elements, never use spaces anywhere in the file name.

For instance, I have a project with the code HRP, then a GUI page
with the title Login Pages, one showing a Login code window prior
to putting in the code and after the code is entered. Therefore, my
images have the following names:

HRP_LoginPages_BeforeLoginCode.gif
HRP_LoginPages_AfterLoginCode.gif

This my not work well for you, it does for me.

Different projects may require that I vary the naming conventions,
but the methodology is usualy the same.
