Indeed Diane, I have also experienced some crashes with Frame 8 (and I'm also running XPSP2 with 2 GB of RAM). When I did the same actions in Frame 7.2, everything was fine. I do hope the Adobe people are monitoring this list and that we get a patch soon which makes Frame 8.0 crash-proof. Stability has always been one of the key features of FrameMaker. I hope I can keep emphasizing this in my future Frame sales pitches. FM 7.2 XP. When looking for a way to remove a ghost revision bar at the end of a paragraph last in a section in Structured FM (5 or 6 levels closing), I went to Format Document Change Bars. When clicking on that (with the elements highlighted), FM crashed without saving of any sort, only showing an error message for a moment and telling it must close. My first experience in this direction for a long time. I have not tried to regenerate this error. In the MIFfed file I found the offending rascal. Between the closing of the second last and the last Section level elements, where there should have been nothing, I found: Font FTag `' FChangeBar Yes FLocked No # end of Font It seemed impossible to get to it in FM itself. Deleting these lines in the MIF cleared the change bar. So this (or something similar) is what to look for in the MIF in such cases. RE: FM abruptly closes with no save
As to why I'm inserting graphics with links, I explained this in a couple of individual emails so I'll just say it again. I inherited this project from an outside consultant. For now I have to stick with the documents as they're currently done. The consultant company puts its screen shots in a Powerpoint. Each Ppt slide is then copied into the FM document using Paste Special, and using the Linked document option in that dialog (and I mean the whole slide, not just the graphic on it). The irony of all this is that my own company wants the whole thing moved over to Word when it's possible. But right now I'm using FM documents that have been APPROVED, which is (as you know) a corporate term meaning they can't be changed other than adding new material. -Original Message- From: Combs, Richard [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, February 14, 2008 10:32 AM To: Brewster, Christopher C; framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: RE: FM abruptly closes with no save Brewster, Christopher C wrote: I think the memory issue is indeed the cause for this. RE: FM abruptly closes with no save
I was going to stay out of this, but it happens to me every day of the week -- whenever I try to use my mouse and the Framemaker scroll bar (instead of touchpad scroll or arrows/pg up/down). Random crashes. Has nothing to do with graphics. Just reaching for/moving the scroll bar with a certain velocity. It happened with 7.1 and I was hoping it'd be fixed by 7.2. but no go. I searched once for a bug/solution and never saw it mentioned so I figured it was my machine. But it's been happening for at least a year now even after I switched machines... Re: FM abruptly closes with no save
When you paste a slide from PowerPoint into FrameMaker, it will be inserted as an OLE object (Object Linking and Embedding). And sometimes, OLE objects don't behave well. As Pete said, you may want to export your slides as png files and import those by reference into FrameMaker. Or you can create a PDF file of the PowerPoint Presentation and import the pages of this PDF into FrameMaker. Good luck. Re: FM abruptly closes with no save
I've had it close when scrolling a document that has embedded Corel graphics, when I scrolled too fast and did not wait for the embedded graphics to appear. You might try saving the powerpoint image as a png / bmp / gif, and then do a import file. What version of FM, what platform?
