That makes me wonder if the trouble is related to a new feature
that does not exist on 2K but does on XP and Vista: activation.
All other features seem to be supported on all WinOS flavors...
One reason we've never considered using such security on Mif2Go
is that it can have just such undesirable side effects.

Just a thought about where to look, Adobe.

Indeed Diane,

I have also experienced some crashes with Frame 8 (and I'm also running

everything was fine.

I do hope the Adobe people are monitoring this list and that we get a

I think the memory issue is indeed the cause for this. I did my process

software should handle a memory issue much more gracefully than simply
closing without saving-such as warning me, or refusing to execute the

 Hi...

No one in this thread has mentioned that, when working with graphics,
FrameMaker likes to have plenty of RAM available to it, especially if

In the MIFfed file I found the offending rascal. Between the closing
of the second last and the last Section level elements, where there
should have been nothing, I found:
 Font
FTag `'
FChangeBar Yes
FLocked No
# end of Font

It seemed impossible to get to it in FM itself. Deleting these lines
in the MIF cleared the change bar. So this (or something similar) is
what to look for in the MIF in such cases.

I've been learning FM in the middle of a project, and it sometimes seems
a bit ornery. I'm inserting graphics linked from a Powerpoint file.
First I do Special Anchored Frame, and set Top of column. Then I
paste the graphic into the frame. Twice today, after I have done this
process 5 or 10 times, I perform the first step and suddenly FM closes
without saving. Since contemporary software usually includes a Newbie
Detector Module to make things more exciting for the beginner, maybe
someone could suggest a way to make myself less obvious to the NDM.
Thanks.

You're right, of course, FM should handle the problem much more
gracefully.

But let me re-emphasize advice you got earlier and chose to ignore:
Don't use OLE! It's OK for one or two Visio drawings or PowerPoint
slides, but each time you do that, you're adding to the FM file all the
code needed to load the graphic's native application and edit it in
place. The overhead is huge and complex.

You have Acrobat, right? Or at least Distiller, since it comes with FM.
You're much better off creating PDFs of your Visio or PowerPoint
graphics and importing those by reference (File Import File, Import
By Reference). Then, when a graphic changes, you just PDF it again (same
name and location, overwriting the previous version). FM sees that the
referenced file is newer, and your doc is updated automatically.

RE: FM abruptly closes with no save

2008-02-14 Thread Brewster, Christopher C
As to why I'm inserting graphics with links, I explained this in a
couple of individual emails so I'll just say it again. I inherited this
project from an outside consultant. For now I have to stick with the
documents as they're currently done. The consultant company puts its
screen shots in a Powerpoint. Each Ppt slide is then copied into the FM
document using Paste Special, and using the Linked document option in
that dialog (and I mean the whole slide, not just the graphic on it).
The irony of all this is that my own company wants the whole thing moved
over to Word when it's possible. But right now I'm using FM documents
that have been APPROVED, which is (as you know) a corporate term meaning
they can't be changed other than adding new material.

I was going to stay out of this, but it happens to me every day of the
week -- whenever I try to use my mouse and the Framemaker scroll bar
(instead of touchpad scroll or arrows/pg up/down).

Random crashes. Has nothing to do with graphics. Just reaching
for/moving the scroll bar with a certain velocity.

It happened with 7.1 and I was hoping it'd be fixed by 7.2. but no go. I
searched once for a bug/solution and never saw it mentioned so I figured
it was my machine. But it's been happening for at least a year now even
after I switched machines...

I have been experiencing the same problem as Christopher. I am running
FrameMaker 7.1 on Windows XP. (And Christopher, I am not a newbie--I
have been using Fm for well over 10 years.)

The last time FM crashed in this way, I had just imported an image
(gif), reduced the size, and was adjusting the frame with the bottom
center handle.

You might try saving the powerpoint image as a png / bmp / gif, and then
do a import file.
What version of FM, what platform?

I've been learning FM in the middle of a project, and it sometimes seems
a bit ornery. I'm inserting graphics linked from a Powerpoint file.
First I do Special Anchored Frame, and set Top of column. Then I
paste the graphic into the frame. Twice today, after I have done this
process 5 or 10 times, I perform the first step and suddenly FM closes
without saving. Since contemporary software usually includes a Newbie
Detector Module to make things more exciting for the beginner, maybe
someone could suggest a way to make myself less obvious to the NDM.
Thanks.

Re: FM abruptly closes with no save

2008-02-13 Thread Yves Barbion
When you paste a slide from PowerPoint into FrameMaker, it will be
inserted as an OLE object (Object Linking and Embedding). And sometimes,
OLE objects don't behave well.

As Pete said, you may want to export your slides as png files and import
those by reference into FrameMaker. Or you can create a PDF file of the
PowerPoint Presentation and import the pages of this PDF into FrameMaker.

Good luck.

2008-02-13 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
I've had it close when scrolling a document that has embedded Corel
graphics, when I scrolled too fast and did not wait for the embedded
graphics to appear.

What I like about the saved image is that if developers make an alteration

Pete-- I'm using FM 8 on Windows XP. I got one suggestion that the
scroll bar sometimes makes the program close, but I think it was when I
inserted the new frame that it happened. Anyway, Save will now be part
 of my iterative process.
