Re: Make files open in correct version
Hi Karen, If you start FrameMaker (11) from the command line (as administrator) with the -reg flag, the registry will be updated and connect FM11 to all FM extensions. In the FM folder is a file named 'fmreg.txt' that will be invoked either when you start FM for the first time or when you use the -reg flag. The dirty way is to change fmreg.txt to fm.reg and start it (as administrator) by double clicking. Re: Make files open in correct version - Solved
If there are any Mac/Parallels users out there who may be faced with this situation, one solution is to use Apple's Automator. An application (app) with just two actions -- get folder contents, set application for files -- does the trick. Drag the actions into Automator's composition window. Select the application you want in the pull-down menu (in my case, Frame 11); Windows apps are (most likely) located in your User file ~/Applications(Parallels)/[your Windows version] Applications/[app name].app. Save the app. Simply drop the folder with the chosen Frame files onto the app's icon and in seconds the files are all converted. You can check the get-info box to confirm the files now have the v11 Frame as their default. They will now open in Frame 11 within the Windows virtual machine from a double-click on the Mac side. RE: Make files open in correct version
Good point, Richard. Yes, this project is a book--that is revised quarterly with about 15 files, total about 100 pages. I usually don't book the files until later in the project, when it's time to finalize pagination; while multiple users are working on the files there's no particular need to work on them as a book. But there's no reason why I can't temporarily re-book for this purpose, or why it can't be a book from the start. For my larger projects with many more stages, this will be an issue to resolve...maybe I will find a way to batch-modify through Mac OS Finder. RE: Make files open in correct version
Ø Thanks for pointing me to the file properties. I'm a Mac person, there is much in Windows I don't know. :-) The files are now identified as Frame 11 files (not Frame 9), and in the properties they are set to open with Frame 11. Actually, it is not part of the files themselves ... it is a setting within Windows. I.e., files with those particular extensions (i.e., the ".fm" and ".book") are now associated with a specific application executable to be used to "open" them. Since it is a specific executable, you can select which application will "open" the file. You could set the executable to be some binary file editor for example! Would have an unexpected outcome, of course, but that is how it would work. As a sidebar: this is different in UNIX systems - the file contains information about how it is to be run, etc., in the initial few bits. This is typically what is examined by the "files *" command in UNIX to tell you what the file is/does (since the concept of an extension is mostly meaningless in UNIX ... a file is a file is a file!). Since OSX is a UNIX derivative, I wonder if it behaves more like UNIX in this regard? Ø I'm using a virtual Windows 7 machine (via Parallels), where Windows and Mac share everything--it's supposed to be seamless. If I double-click on these files from within the Windows Explorer, they now open with v11; but when I do it from the Mac desktop, they still try to open with v9. That is the behavior I would expect. Ø Apparently anything set on the Windows side does NOT seamlessly translate to the Mac side. The same file's properties, when viewed on the Mac, still show v9 specified. Discussion for another support list, I guess ;-). Maybe I am belaboring the point a bit now :), but this is because the properties/settings for these files are an OS issue ... unrelated to the fact that they are FrameMaker files, or which version of the FrameMaker application is to be used, etc. Hope this helps, Z ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. You are correct Art, I guess, I misunderstood the case, my bad. @Karen, you can also, try right clicking to your FM Doc and choose Open with -- Default Program and choose FrameMaker 11 as application (browse) and check the checkbox for using this application always. Right-click a .book file, select Open With, check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file," select FM11 (browse if necessary), OK. Do the same with an .fm file. Re: Make files open in correct version
Hi Karen, As they have been upgraded to Fm 11, when you opened them in that release so, you may not be open them again, in FM9 this way. Try saving your Documents as MIF7 (File-- Saves as -- MIF7 format and then try again) See if it works! Well, if FM 11 is open, you can open them from within FM 11 (File > Open) instead of switching to Windows Explorer and trying to open them from there. But if you want FM files to automatically open with FM 11, change the file association: 1) In Windows Explorer, right-click an FM file and select Properties. 2) In the Properties dialog box, on the General tab, click the Change button to the right of Opens with. 3) In the Open with dialog, select FrameMaker 11. If it's not listed, browse to the FM 11 installation folder and select FrameMaker.exe. 4) Make sure that Always use the selected program to open this kind of file is checked and click OK. Richard G.
