Solved:

I had edited my maker.ini file, but not realised that Wordpad is not the best 
tool for the job - it destroyed the file's UTF-8 format, which was causing my 
problems.

Restored from a backup, and everything is hunky-dory again.

So, when editing maker.ini, ensure you use something like Notepad, that doesn't 
change file types.

Yeah, Wordpad maintains some level of Word compatibility.

If you need an editor with enhanced features, look at NotePad -- freeware
and pay versions; it's great.

Well, WordPad saves files as RTF by default. But you can choose to save
as text, DOS text, or Unicode text. 
 
 If you need an editor with enhanced features, look at NotePad --
freeware
 and pay versions; it's great.

Did you mean NotePad+ or NoteTab? I'm partial to EditPad, myself.
