RE: 3rd level index entry problem

2007-06-15 Thread Fred Ridder

What you're adding to the index entry is not a paragraph tag;
it is a *character* tag.

If this formatting is something you want to apply to every
1st-level index entry, the way you should do this is by setting
the formatting in the paragraph format of the Level1IX paragraph
tag in the paragraph catalog of the IX file. Doing global formatting
in the index entries themselves is simply a mainetnance nightmare.

As to why your index entries aren't working properly, I'm not
sure I have any good ideas. One thing you might want to try
(assuming that you really do intend to stick with the approach
of applying character formatting in the index entries) is to
explictly cancel the character format at the ned of the top-
level entry using Default Para Font just before the first
colon.

And just to make sure: You're not including paragraph breaks
or line breaks in your index markers, are you? There's a known
bug in FrameMaker relating to that.

Subject: 3rd level index entry problem

Dear Framers,

I'm using Frame 7.0 on Mac 10.3.9, and I'm having trouble with 3rd level
index entries for a book.
I'm adding manually a paragraph tag IndexFirst to first level index
entries. Maybe that was a stupid thing to do in the first place, and maybe
it has nothing to do with my problem. Anyhow, the results are fine for
first and second level entries. Yet any third level entry does not appear
at the correct place, reproducing all 3 levels in its own entry.

Example:

This creates a correct second level entry:
IndexFirstcustomer:corporate customer

This creates an incorrect third level entry
IndexFirstcustomer:corporate customer:scenarios

Snippet from the resulting Index:

customer
corporate customer
scenarios 306–308
customer
other 2nd level entries here
corporate customer 19, 50, 63, 147, 149
scenarios does NOT show up as 3rd level entry here

AFAIK it has noting to do with the page ranges, since I get the same
behavior with other entries that are for a single page. In fact, I get the
same behavior for any 3rd level entries that I've tried so far. I also
tried to force the entry by adding a sort order [customer:corporate
customer], which seems to be ignored. What am I missing?

Thanks in advance for any help

Re: Change bars in Framemaker

2007-06-15 Thread David Bills

Hi Becky,

If you're going to use automatic change bars, it's important to understand
what is marked as a change when this command is activated. For example,
updated cross-references are marked as a change; updated graphics that are
imported by reference are not marked as a change; updated graphics that are
imported with a different file name are marked as a change; etc.

If you're experiencing undesirable results, mark the changes manually. It
takes a little longer, but the peace of mind is worth it.

Also, the compare document feature mentioned in a previous e-mail doesn't do
a good job identifying changes in tables or graphics. It also introduces
conditional text to the document, which adds a layer of complexity to the
document. It's a useful tool, but probably not the best solution for your
situation.

Good luck,

Dave Bills

Cannot launch distiller to create PDF file

2007-06-15 Thread Adam Schweitzer
I am having a problem trying to save Frame documents as PDF files using
the File-save as command. It seems to work haphazardly - sometimes, a
PDF is generated with no problem, other times Frame keeps trying for
quite a while (almost appearing as if the program crashed, using 100% of
the CPU), eventually giving up after several minutes with the error
message Cannot launch Acrobat Distiller to create PDF file. There
does not seem to be any discernible pattern to suggest to me why it
might be failing.

I am running Framemaker 7.2p158 and Distiller 8.0 on Windows XP
Professional.

It has been suggested to me that this might be a result of having
multiple copies of Distiller installed on the system, but I'm not sure
how I would check that (Distiller doesn't show up in Add/remove programs
on it's own).

Any ideas?

If in fact it works sometimes but not others, the problem
has nothing to do with having multiple distillers on your
system. If you installed the standalone version of Distiller
that came with FrameMaker, it would be available to uninstall
from the Add/Remove programs control panel.

I would suggest that for reliability, you print to the
Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance in lieu of
using the save as PDF feature. Please advise if that works

I have this problem but in my case it's consistent.

After I've rebooted my computer, the first time I try to create a PDF from a

Change bars in Framemaker

2007-06-15 Thread rebecca.l.fras...@aphis.usda.gov
My framehating coworker requested that I send this question in. We use
automatic change bars every time we work on our files. Big ones, 10 pt

file, it will add change bars in areas he hasn't touched, such as chapter
titles. He gets very frustrated over it. And by the way, is having
automatic change bars turned on all the time a good idea?

Depends on your goal -- if you want to frustrate Frame-hating
co-workers, it seems to be working. ;-)

In the absence of such a goal, though, I'd say it's a really bad idea.

I can't imagine working that way. Even if I needed to mark changes as I
worked, I'd do it manually so that only substantive changes get marked,
not automatically updated things like xrefs and trivial edits like
typos.

A much better way to track changes, IMO, is to use FM's Compare
Documents function (File > Utilities > Compare Documents; check the
manual or help for info about the options available). Run the comparison
after you're finished updating the document, comparing it to the
previous version -- you did save the previous version before starting to
make changes, right?

Change bars in Framemaker

It also introduces
conditional text to the document, which adds a layer of complexity to the
document. It's a useful tool, but probably not the best solution for your
situation.

Good luck,

Dave Bills

I created a new document from the standard template (blank portrait),
and added just a few 2nd and 3rd level index entries. I touched the
file as little as possible: No copy/ paste from my document that could
include any corrupt stuff. No formatting, no changes on the reference
pages. Then I created a new book, and added a standard index. I did no
tweaking whatsoever, and I get the same behavior.

Any further suggestions are appreciated.

Cannot launch distiller to create PDF file

2007-06-15 Thread Dov Isaacs
If in fact it works "sometimes" but not others, the problem
has nothing to do with having multiple distillers on your
system. If you installed the standalone version of Distiller
that came with FrameMaker, it would be available to uninstall
from the Add/Remove programs control panel.

I would suggest that for reliability, you print to the
Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance in lieu of
using the "save as PDF" feature. Please advise if that works
consistently.

Cannot launch distiller to create PDF file

2007-06-15 Thread Catherine Woods
I have this problem but in my case it's consistent.

After I've rebooted my computer, the first time I try to create a PDF from a
file or book it doesn't work. If I immediately use "save as" again, it's
fine.
