Re: FrameMaker Server User Interface??

Hi Randy,

Don't overlook FrameScript as an automation tool for FrameMaker Server

Even adding the cost of custom scripts, your total investment can be a
fraction of what some of the other products cost.

A few years ago, we installed a server-based version of Frame: No
documentation, little product knowledge on the part of the Adobe
customer service folks. Now, new company, same need. This time, our IT
department tells us that we need software programming to build the
interface for the control/security/access features. to the tune of
$25,000 worth of software programming consultant time. This floored me
since the last time it was a single CD that a one-person IT department
installed in a few hours.
Has the Server version changed?
And the Adobe site says that Server needs a companion and must be
integrated into a solution before it is ready for use. You can either
purchase third-part solutions (From Datazone or Finite Matters Limited)
or you can build your own solution using Frame Developers Kit.
I don't recall us using FDK or third-party solution before. What
experiences do other Listers have for FM Server?
TIA,

Re: Excel Question

Let me explain what I am doing. I am writing a CSV file programatically. I
have a column of document names across the top.

Each row consists of a format name and the count of that format in each
document's column.

Heading1 10 5 9
Body 40 12 22

So, for the last column in each row, I want to put a formula that will sum
each format's count. I want to write a generic formula, if possible, because
I don't want to keep track of the row number as I write the data. That is
because I am writing some other things to the report.

Hi All,

We've got an odd problem with an FM file (v 7.2b128 Win). When the doc
was released, the writer used the (timesaving and fabulously thorough)
Archive plugin to archive the project files and then used WinZip to create
a .zip archive (unencrypted) of the files. Shortly thereafter, the
original files were purged and only the .zip of the archived files
remains.

Today, we had to access the FM files from that zipped archive, and
everything restored in workable fashion, except for one chapter file,
which is now opening as view only, no matter what we do. We checked attrib
and it's not set to read-only. It's like it was locked for editing when
the archive was created, but we don't know for sure; that's just the only
explanation I can imagine for how we could find ourselves in this spot,
based on my experience with having opened files while they're locked by
another user. The Archive plugin didn't give an error or note as much in
the log, though, so that may not be the reason at all.

Regardless, we're in the rather untenable position of having to find a
way to get an editable version of an FM file from the view-only version of
it, with no record of a .lck file for it and no other version of the FM
file available. The view-only version has conditional text hidden that we
now need to show in the new version, so although I have been able to
convert the view-only file to TXT, all the hidden text was omitted from
the TXT version.

I did try to dig through the archives, but...I'm coming up empty-handed.
Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

 Thanks,
 Rene Stephenson

Nested ul and ol elements

2007-05-17 Thread Rick Quatro

Hello Framers,

I need help with text formatting rules in an EDD. Basically, I am allowing
nesting of ol and ul elements. I need rules that will allow a particular
format to be called, depending on the nesting level. Here is an example of
flat structure. The text in the element indicates the paragraph format
used.

ul
 libullet1/li
ul

ol
 linumber1/li
ol

For nested ul elements, it is no problem. In theory, I can do the same thing
with ol elements (although in practice I don't).

ul
 libullet1/li
 ul
   libullet2/li
   ul
 libullet3/li
 ul
   libullet4/li
 ul
   ul
 ul
ul

What I want to be able to do is this

ul
 libullet1/li
 ol
   linumber2/li
   ul
 libullet3/li
 ol
   linumber4/li
 ol
   ul
 ol
ul

or this

ol
 linumber1/li
 ul
   libullet2/li
   ul
 libullet3/li
 ol
   linumber4/li
 ol
   ul
 ul
ol

or any combination of nested ol and ul elements. I am having trouble
devising the correct text formatting rules. Any help or pointers would be
appreciated. Thanks.

Hi all --

Framescript question--Frame 7.0p579, FrameScript 4.1R2.

I have a script that moves through a book and sets the left margin of
each graphic to a certain distance based on the context of the anchored
frame. The basic logic is: If the preceding paragraph tag is A, set the
margin to X. If it's B, set it to Y ... and so on. This part works
great.

I now have a book that requires individual inspection of each graphic.
I need to see it to know whether to change it. The problem is that when
my existing script runs, it doesn't bring each anchored frame into view
in the Frame window. All I see is the first page of the document and a
bunch of flickering as the graphics are changed. Is there a way to get
the focus of the window to change as part of the script, so that I just
click Yes or No for each frame? I'd rather not have to scroll manually
to each anchored frame.

Thanks for any wisdom!
Anita

Help decoding Running H/F variables with attibutes

2007-05-24 Thread Rick Quatro

Hello All,

I am trying to figure out how attribute-based Running H/F variables work.
Here is are examples of a couple in a document I have:

$attribute[Booktitle:book]
$attribute[Revision:book]

I assume that the first is looking for the value of the Booktitle attribute
on the book element, and the second is looking for the value of the Revision
element on the book element. Is this correct?

Also, I notice something about attribute-based Running H/F building blocks
that differs from paragraph- and marker-based building blocks: the document
I am look at doesn't have a book element, but it still displays the value.
In fact, I don't even have the book file where I assume the book element
originates. Does this sound right? Thanks.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for your reply. I got the message below rom Mark O'Connor offlist.
The book information is stored in each file, which is nice because the
attribute values carry over, even if you don't have the book. You have to
save the document as MIF and fish out the information, but at least it's
there. As far as I can tell, you can't get the information directly from the
document with FrameScript or the FDK.

Hi Rick,
The format is [attribute name:element name]. If you don't specify the
element name, the first occurrence of the attribute on the page will be
used (blank if there are no occurrences). If you specify an element
name, it will use the first occurrence on the page: if there are no
occurrences it will use the value of the first parent element that uses
the attribute (and blank if no parent elements use the attribute).
The book element information is contained within the file, but
you'll need to save the file as mif to find it (look for
DBookElementHierarchy). I believe that this info is updated by the
generate/update command.
Cheers,
Mark O'C

Hi everyone,
I recently upgraded to FM 7.2 (WinXP) and I'm finding the new Cannot be

undone... OK to continue? dialog box greatly annoying. It's especially
annoying when I'm updating a book with 40 files because it appears
between each file as it saves. Aaargh!

Is there any way to stop this dialog box from appearing when I save or
update documents?

Thanks in advance,

OT: Comparing 2 XML documents

2007-06-14 Thread Rick Quatro

Hello All,

I am looking for an algorithm for comparing two XML files using XPath. I
don't want to use a standalone compare utility, unless it can be invoked as
a COM object. I can drive MSXML as a COM object through FrameScript, so I
would prefer to use that. MSXML can use XPath to query the XML files. Any
help would be appreciated. Thank you very much.

Re: Save book as postcript

2007-07-20 Thread Rick Quatro

Hi Morten,

If you run into a dead end with DoBatch, you should consider FrameScript for
FrameMaker automation. It is a full-featured scripting language for
FrameMaker. See http://www.framescript.com.

Hi Bodvar,

Peter (Gold) is absolutely right in his assumption that I want to
manipulate a collection of books. I have several such collections - one
of which contains close to 30 books. I use DoBatch to open and update
all books in these book collections, and as I said in my original
posting - someone has told me there was a new version of DoBatch that
allows me to batch-print to PostScript as well.

(Before I moved to Windows, I used to use fmbatch for this.)

Re: FM To PowerPoint

2007-08-02 Thread Rick Quatro
Thanks for the suggestion. My client wants PowerPoint so they can modify the
slides downstream.

Rick

Do you need all of the bells and whistles in PowerPoint? If not, just
use FrameMaker and PDF. Use disconnected pages with three workflows -
one for the slide material, one below that for viewer notes, and one
below that for presentation notes. Generate a PDF of all three workflows
for the presentation notes. Crop the bottom workflow out leaving just
the two top workflows and save that PDF as the viewer notes. Crop both
of the bottom workflows out and save that PDF as the presentation. Run
the presentation PDF in full screen mode. Your situation will determine
if you can live without the PowerPoint bells and whistles, but if you
can, it saves tons of time. If you can'twell good luck!

Frame 7.2 and Distiller 8.1 Crash

2007-08-03 Thread Rick Quatro

Hi Framers,

I am using FrameScript to save a bunch of FrameMaker documents to PDF. The
script has been used sucessfully with Distiller 7.0.x. With Distiller 8.1, I
get intermittent Distiller crashes. The PDF is actually being created, but
it is still named with a .tpdf extension. Apparently, Distiller is crashing
before it renames the file to .pdf.

Even on successful jobs, Distiller does not clean up the .tps and .tpdf
files. Has anyone else seen problems like this, particularly with documents
saved without a script. Thanks in advance.

Re: FrameMaker 8 Automatic Letter Spacing Broken?

Yes, I can verify this behavior with FrameMaker 8 on Windows XP.

I posted this topic a couple of days ago with no response. Probably I made
it too complicated. :) Can someone please tell me if they see the same
problem with FM8?

1. Click in a sample body text paragraph.

2. In the Paragraph Designer, set alignment to justified. Extra space is
added between words to make the text line reach the right-hand margin. It
works as expected.

3. Now, in the Advanced tab of the Paragraph Designer, check the Allow
Automatic Letter Spacing checkbox. Some lines in the paragraph jump back
from the right-hand margin, and are no longer justified! (You may have to
change your zoom level to see it, and it's more obvious in narrow columns
than wide ones.) FM applies letter spacing to words on some lines, and
those are the lines that lose justification.

Justification and Automatic Letter Spacing used to work together. Now,
only one or the other works. Is anyone else seeing this?

P.S. I have DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics=On in maker.ini, but the problem

OT: DITA id attribute values

Hi Framers,

I am working on programmatically setting unique id values on all of the

Hi,

These files can still be used in Distiller 8. The documentation for A8
states:
Sample Prologue.ps and Epilogue.ps files are located in (Windows)

Although the path on the Mac is actually different to that stated above,

Re: I'm impressed with Adobe

2007-09-14 Thread Rick Quatro

Hi Tina,

I appreciate your thoughts, but if you look at it from a larger perspective,
Adobe shouldn't get too much credit here. FrameMaker has had PDF (another
Adobe technology) integration for a long time and this should have been
fixed before FrameMaker 8 was released. We are not asking for perfect
software, but it should at least work as well as previous versions.

Yes, we now know that FrameMaker is not dead. But it is evident that it is
not getting a lot of Adobe's resources or attention, at least not compared
to other Adobe products.

Rick Quatro
Carmen Publishing
585-659-8267
www.frameexpert.com

Hi all,

Just thought I'd update the list. Over the last few weeks of working with
Frame 8, I've uncovered two bugs, the most recent of which was not being
able to create a PDF file (File Save As PDF) when there is a generated
file in the book.

After I got a workaround from this list, I also got an email from a QA
person at Adobe, who is monitoring this list. I sent off my file to them,
and they have verified the bug and are working on a fix.

I've worked in software long enough to know that fixes don't happen
overnight, and that there has never been a perfect piece of software in
the
history of the universe. I am impressed by their responsiveness though,
the

fact that they are following this list, and they're actively paying
attention to bugs.

SOLVED: Re: Single MIF for FrameMaker book

2007-09-15 Thread Rick Quatro
It turns out that creating a single FM document for all of the files in the
book was the best approach. I was able to do this with a FrameScript script,
and I now have a happy client. Thanks for all of the suggestions. If anyone
else has this need, please let me know.

Rick Quatro
Carmen Publishing

So, in reality, the *only* way to create this single MIF is to first
solve the problem of creating a single FM document for all the files
in the book. If that can't be done, or is considered too cumbersome,
then the single MIF file cannot be created either. It's really that
simple since both formats are simply two representations of the same

ANN: Excel To FrameMaker

2007-09-15 Thread Rick Quatro

Hello Framers,

I have had considerable sucess using FrameScript to import Excel data into
FrameMaker. Here is a workflow example:

1) Put the insertion point in a paragraph.

2) Choose FrameScript Import Table. You will be prompted for a spreadsheet
file (*.xls).

3) You will be prompted with a list of all the worksheets in the
spreadsheet. Select the one you want to insert.

The data is inserted in a fully-formatted FrameMaker table. You can continue
to edit and update the data in Excel. To update the corresponding FrameMaker
tables, you choose FrameScript Update Tables and all of the tables are
updated with the latest spreadsheet data.

This is only one example of what can be done; the process can be automated
further. If you have any interest in an Excel to FrameMaker workflow, please
contact me offlist with your specific requirements. Thank you very much.

Re: Manipulating EDDs with Framescript

2007-09-19 Thread Rick Quatro

Hi Adam,

You might want to check the FrameScript group at http://groups.yahoo.com. Do
you want to add values to attributes that already exist, or are you trying
to add new, valid attributes to the element? Thanks.

Rick Quatro
Carmen Publishing
585-659-8267
www.frameexpert.com

Hi all,
I need to add two attributes for an element to the EDD of all of our
documents. The simple way to do this would be to take a template EDD
and use the Import ElementDefs command in Framescript. However, this
poses a problem, because not all of our documents necessarily use the
same EDD (usually - I believe - just minor tweaks for formatting
purposes, as they all must comply to the same xml DTD)

So, what I'd really like to do, in order to eliminate the risk my EDD
changes may have unintended consequences, is add attributes to the EDD
of the document.. or even import just a part of an EDD (ie. instead of
overwriting the entire EDD with a template EDD, only overwrite those
elements defined in the template). However, I can't seem to find a way
to do this.

Any suggestions on how I might accomplish this? Or is there a better
approach?

Thanks,

Re: adding blank pages without affecting page numbers

2007-09-19 Thread Rick Quatro

Hi Milan,

If you are always adding a blank page after each of the existing pages, you
could have an Acrobat JavaScript script add them to the PDF file. Everytime
you make a new PDF file, you would run the JavaScript script on the PDF
file.

You could also use FrameScript to postprocess the PDF file and add the
pages.

But if you only have 6 pages and you are not going to make the PDF many
times, you might be better off adding the pages to the PDF by hand.

I'm working on a legacy doc (unstructured; Frame 7.2); the author is
no longer available for consultation.

In the Frame file, I have six pages, numbered x of 6. I have a PDF of
this file (the previously approved and released version, which I am
now revising); each of these pages is followed by a blank page. Let's
assume that these are needed -- I don't know why, and there isn't time
to find out.

Does anyone know of something I can set up in the Frame file so that I
don't have to remember to add the pages in Acrobat? As far as I can

Many thanks.

Re: adding blank pages without affecting page numbers

2007-09-19 Thread Rick Quatro

Hi Milan,

Here is a FrameMaker solution you can try for fun (at your own risk).
Assuming you don't anticipate much page flow and you are using unstructured
FrameMaker, try this:

1) Open the document.

2) Press Esc p z and click Freeze.

3) Put your cursor at the bottom of each content page and press Return until
a new point page is added.

4) Go to each of the new, blank point pages. Choose Format Page Layout
Master Page Usage and apply None master page to each of the point pages.
This will suppress the point page numbers.

Before you get too excited, check the document carefully. You may encounter
any of the following problems:

* Autonumbers will reset in each of the text frames.
* Tables that break across pages will short circuit the page numbers.

You can reverse the frozen pages by choosing Esc p z and clicking Unfreeze.

Hello everyone,

I wanted to know if there was a way to setup a if...,them... syntax

ANN: HTML to FrameMaker Case Study

2007-10-05 Thread Rick Quatro

Hello Framers,

I have long used FrameScript and MSXML to import XML into unstructured
FrameMaker files. MSXML is great because it uses standard XML technologies
such as XPath and XSLT to access and manipulate XML files. FrameScript can
drive MSXML using its EActiveXObject object.

There have been several instances where I wanted to import HTML files into
FrameMaker, but it wasn't possible with MSXML because it requires
well-formed XML. In some cases, it wasn't feasible or practical to convert
the HTML to well-formed XML. During a recent project, I discovered a simple
workaround to the HTML problem. I used regular expressions to extract the
necessary section from the HTML document and convert it to a well-formed XML
document. Then I used my usual MSXML process to import the data into
FrameMaker.

I have outlined the process in a small case study. You can see the PDF here

http://www.frameexpert.com/demos/htmltoframe.pdf

If you have any need for HTML to FrameMaker conversions, please let me know.
We can explore if it is feasible using FrameScript and MSXML. If your data
is non-proprietary and you would like to participate in a more detailed case
study, please let me know. Thanks.

Subject: Adjusting table column widths in a two column layout

Everyone,

Our printed manuals have a two column layout in FrameMaker. When we
create tables in this layout, we specify the column widths so that the
overall width of the table doesn't exceed the width of the column it is
in. This method works fine for the printed manual. However, when we
import the Framemaker file into MadCap Flare, the column widths remain
the same as the were in FM; unlike the surrounding text, whose margins
expand to fit the size of the Help window. This means that the text in
the columns appears smashed (horizontally) compared to the surrounding
text.

Is there a way to configure table column widths in either FrameMaker or
Flare so that, when the document is imported into Flare, the table
expands to the width of the surrounding text?

Re: Footnote problem--long footnotes

2007-10-17 Thread Rick Quatro

Hi Tina,

Footnote problems like you are experiencing is a known issue at least since
FrameMaker 4, possibly earlier.

Rick Quatro
Carmen Publishing

www.frameexpert.com

Hi all,

I'm laying out a manuscript in Frame 8 that is packed full of detailed
footnotes. This author is fond of them, and one footnote in particular
spans

multiple pages. Word can allow footnotes to span pages. So far, it appears
that Frame's footnotes can't span pages.

I can't get into the merits of writing in long footnotes (whole 'nother
discussion), I'm stuck with them, and I didn't write them. When I get a
footnote that is longer than one page, even moving the maximum height as
high as possible (Format Document Footnote Properties Maximum Height
Per Column), Frame goes into Footnote Freefall. The extra-long footnote
disappears, and all the other footnotes seem to lose their minds in the
process. they go onto one page per footnote at the end of the document.
Meaning they leave the bottoms of the pages throughout and go to the end,
one footnote per page, thus adding about 15-20 extra pages to the end of
my
document, blank except for one footnote at the bottom of each. If I take
out
the now disappeared long footnote (by deleting the footnote reference in
the

text), all the other footnotes go back where they belong.

Has anyone seen this? Any ideas about how to deal with long footnotes in
Frame other than go back to the author and tell him to rewrite?

Hello Framers,
This might be slightly OT but here is the issue. I'm PDFing my Frame files
with Distiller 6.0. Now and then my publisher comes up with font issues -
certain fonts come out wrongly like bold comes out as bold ital or small
caps comes out as bold small caps, etc. Tracing it back I narrowed it down
to fonts having identical XUIDs. Now, I can of course go ahead and remove
IDs on all fonts but this would be a tedious task - I have over 5000 fonts
library plus this doesn't seem to be the right solution as in couple
instances it didn't help either.
My publisher is using Docuprint machines and doesn't have much options of
changing fonts there.
I'm trying PDF995 now and it seems like I have more control over the PDF
process with a postscript language. I don't know much of Ghostscript at
all - it was barely enough to change the compression method for the images,
however it should be possible to remove XUIDs at PDFing step but how? I
found a piece of a script that does something with XUIDs but this didn't
seem to work at all - the PDF just wouldn't get created.

The file I'm editing is called gs_pdfwr.ps - it's part of the pdf995
package.

Please HELP.

Michael

P.S. I tried a lot of things in the attempt to solve it to no avail. Please
do not suggest any other handling - I tried them all (sad but true...). I
only would like to know how to remove XUID when my file gets created.

Re: Possible Frame6+SGML Issue only MIF to Native and OLE graphics

2007-11-07 Thread Rick Quatro

Hi Dan,

One thing to consider: it may be better to do your string replacements in
FrameMaker without going to MIF and back. Since you are using FrameScript,
you may be able to do these replacements in the binary file (depending on
what exactly you are doing).

I have a process in which I run both Frame 6 and 7 documents through an
automated build. One step in this effort is to save all the files to MIF
and do some string replacements on the file, then save that result back
to Native form so I can print the documents. Note that is this case no
substitutions were made, so it is just a round tripping of the files
from MIF to Native

As these files are saved back to Native (via FrameScript) I'm getting
the following error/warning from Frame:
SnagIt.jpg
This has occurred on 4 different books, not sure if they have been all
Frame 6 or not, but this last one is 6. One of the books we couldn't
track the problem down and had to rebuild it. The other 3 seem to all be
related to embedded OLE graphics. Is there some known problem with OLE
embedded graphics or an issue with saving from MIF back to Native?

 All,

Using FM 7.2 on Windows XP/SP2 with Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.0.x. I
am successfully using the Save as PDF option on my Framemaker source
files; I have the option checked of Deleting Log file upon successful
completion, however, for the life of me, I can't figure out where to
tell the application to also delete the tpdf and tps files that are also
created. I have looked through every tab on the Adobe PDF printer

after the generation of a PDF. Can someone point me in the correct
 direction?

Re: HTML to MIF?

2007-12-07 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Adam,

Since you can produce MIF from a FrameMaker file, a good approach might be
to convert the HTML files to FrameMaker. Depending on the complexity of the
HTML markup, it may be feasible to do this with FrameScript. If you want to
investigate this further, please contact me offlist. Thanks.

So, I'm looking for a way to produce a MIF file from a batch of HTML
 files.

Looking through the list archives, I see that Omni Systems is/was
considering the development of Go2Mif for this purpose. However, since I
haven't heard anything recent about it, I'm assuming that its release
 isn't
 imminent, at any rate.

Has anyone had any success in doing this? If so, what tools did you use?

In the past, I've used XSLT to create MIF files from XML files. However,
given that HTML frequently isn't well-formed XML, I'm not at all
 confident
that an XSLT solution would be feasible.

Anyway, any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

ANN: Powerful New FrameScript Functionality

2007-12-10 Thread Rick Quatro
Hello Framers and Scripters,

FrameScript 5 adds new structured FrameMaker import/export functionality. It
allows you to make modifications to your XML files on import or export to
and from FrameMaker. These changes go much further than what is available
with read/write rules. This functionality was previously only available with
custom FDK plugins.

If you have need to modify XML on import/export please send me your detailed
requirements. I may be able to provide you with a prototype to demonstrate
FrameScript 5's new capabilities. Thank you very much.

Re: Convert MIF to .fm (Frame) in Windows environment??

2007-12-15 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Sue,

A similar program for Windows FrameMaker is dzBatcher

 Hi,

I'm no Frame expert so am hoping someone can help me here. I was able to
use fmbatch in a Unix environment to basically take a MIF file, open it,
import formats from a template file, and then Save it as a .fm file (which
was then included in a Frame book).

Now I'm in a Windows environment where fmbatch is not available. Is there
a way to still accomplish this same thing, in an automatic/scripted
fashion (i.e. I don't want to have to manually open/save).

 Thanks!!

Re: FM 7.2 and Acrobat 8: remove .tps and view PDF

2007-12-17 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Yves,

These are problems that would probably require a FrameMaker 7.2 patch to
fix. With FrameMaker 8 released, this is not likely to happen. You may be
able to do something with FrameScript to clean things up.

Rick Quatro
Carmen Publishing

 Hi Framers,

I'm using FrameMaker 7.2 with Acrobat 8. I create my PDFs using Save as
 PDF.
 Two questions:

   - In this process, a .tps file (temporary PostScript file?) is
created, but when the PDF is ready, the .tps file is still there. How
 can I
make it go away automatically (using Frame 7.2)? It is removed
automatically if I use FrameMaker 8.
   - I have selected View PDF in the Distiller Preferences and in the
Adobe PDF printer settings, but the PDF is not displayed automatically.
 It
does appear automatically if I use Frame 8.

Any ideas how I can make this work with Frame 7.2?

 Thanks in advance.

Re: Scroll Back Bug - still around in FM8?

2007-12-17 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Carla,

I haven't had a chance to test this with FM 8. Even if the bug is fixed, the

Has anyone run into the infamous Scroll Back Bug in FM 8? (which was
nicely circumvented by Rick Quatro's runaroundnone.dll in FM7.2 and
 earlier).

We just officially upgraded to FM 8, and as I look to install and/or
upgrade the various plugins and such that we've purchased, I wondered if
I should still install this particular one.

Re: Hypertext links in Acrobat8 documents generated from FM8don't work

2007-12-21 Thread Rick Quatro

Hi Austin,

I have FrameMaker 5.5.6, 6.0, 7.0, 7.2, and 8.0 installed on the same
computer. When going back and forth from 7.x to 8.0, you may have issues
with characters changing. For example, I had some Zapf Dingbat characters
that changed when I upgraded a document to 8.0.

If you need an automated way to convert your 8.0 documents back to 7.x
format, let me know. You could do this with a FrameScript script.

Rick Quatro
Carmen Publishing
585-659-8267
www.frameexpert.com

We are feeling as if Adobe has just sabotaged our entire 15-year
project. How could they have offered an upgrade that destroys hypertext?

Our Kouroo project now has 212,974 files that have already been saved
as FM8 since we upgraded a few weeks ago, so going back to FM7
seems difficult. We are, however, beginning to scheme a feasible
workaround to give Adobe time to get its act together in regard to
hypertext and FM8. FM8 does allow us to save an FM8 file in the FM7
format, and FM7 does generate valid hypertext in an Acrobat document.
So, *if* we can have both FM8 and FM7 installed at the same time (if
there is a way to keep them from interfering with each other), and
*if* we don't use any UNICODE or other features that would be
destroyed in the retro-save as FM7 (and if Acrobat8.1 can still
handle hypertext), a possible workaround would be: to first save an
FM8 document as a FM7 document before attempting to generate any
Acrobat8.1 document with hypertext. That seems feasible if it's doable.

The three questions associated with this feasible workaround would
be: 1.) is there a way to have FM8 and still have FM7 also? --and,
2.) are there any new FM8 features that we cannot allow to be
destroyed by saving as FM7? --and, 3.) does the 8.1 version of
 Acrobat still accept hypertext?

Does anyone have any thoughts about this? Are the above three items
 doable?

Hello and happy new year to all,

I have a problem with Chris Despopoulos' DoBatch plugin from his
Cudspan series of plugins. Judging from the mailing list he hasn't
made an appearance yet, but maybe somebody else can clarify.

We're using the DoBatch plugin to save several hundred files (in a
number of batches) as PostScript (in a watched folder that get
converted to PDF). It worked perfectly while we were using it in
FrameMaker5.5.6+SGML. However, since we migrated to 7.2, we're
encountering reproducible FrameMaker crashes when using the plugin.
The only available version appears to be 1.0.0.1 dated 17 dec 2001.
Has anybody else encountered this problem and possibly found a
 solution to it?

Also, in case we are unable to resolve this issue, I am considering
using Omnisys' runfm.exe batch tool. Would this be a valid
 alternative?

 Thank you in advance.

 Good day mavins,

I have 2 books where book 1 uses files 1 - 10 and book 2 uses some of the
 same files (let's say files 5 - 7).

I want to set up the books (files) so that in book 1 all the pages are
numbered consecutively, starting from page 1 in file 1. Thus the first
page in file 5 will be, for instance, page 35.

I also want the pages in book 2 to start from 1; here file 5 needs to
 start at page 1.

How can I set up the numbering so this happens automatically and the page
number in files 5 - 7 are appropriate in each book without requiring human

 Hello

First, I want to thank everyone for the answers I received on my last
question. I have been volunteered to field FrameMaker questions at my
new job, so you may be hearing from me fairly often. I hope I can return
the favor for you guys as well!

The question is, Framemaker decides whether to display text associated
with two conditions using the Or relationship; meaning, if one of its
conditions is displayed, the text is displayed.

 Example:

Line 1: This is cond text A
Line 2: This is cond text B
Line 3: This is cond text A and B
Line 4: This is cond text A and C

If I choose to hide cond text C, yet display cond text A and B, the
 following lines are displayed: 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Is there a way to change FrameMaker's default logic so that only lines 1,
 2, and 3 would display?

 Thank you!
 Marta

2008-02-07 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Esar,

If you have FrameScript, I have a script that will do this. The cost for the
script is $40. Please let me know if you are interested. Thank you very
much.

 Hi,

Does anyone have a method of counting the total number of words in a
Framemaker book? I know I can count the number of words in a file in a
 book
but is there some way of doing this on the book??
 Thanks,

Re: Limiting table/graphics table widths

2008-02-12 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Loretta,

You may want to take a look at my TableCleaner plugin. It allows you to
resize tables in a batch. See

 Hi Everyone,

We're looking for a way to limit the width of our tables in our
template. This is so tables don't overflow when copied into different
 page sizes during translation.

This includes tables with multiple columns and a single-cell tables
 used to hold graphics.

I see there's a way to resize columns to a max width on existing
tables, but I don't see a setting that sets a max column/table size
for a table in the Table Designer. Is it possible?

 If not, any genius ideas?

 Thanks,

 Loretta

Re: Markers in the text

2008-02-13 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Deirdre,

They are probably index markers. To easily select them, click in a paragraph
previous to where you see them. Choose Edit Find/Change and choose Any
Marker from the Find popup menu. Click Find and see if it highlights the
marker anchor. Then choose Special Marker so you can see the contents of
the marker.

 Hi all:

I'm working with someone eles's templates, and every now and then I
find an upside down T in the text. I've seen these markers for
anchored frames, and I've seen them in the TOC, but when they appear
to be randomly placed in the text, how do I find out what they are?

 Thanks

Re: Autonumbering at end of paragraph is right justified

2008-02-19 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Jing,

What you are trying to accomplish is a good idea, but End of Paragraph
autonumbers always move out to the right margin. If you are using structured
FrameMaker, you could use a Suffix Rule to add a colon where the text ends.

 Hello FrameMaker experts!

 FrameMaker 7.2 on WinXP -

We use a standard heading to introduce procedures and the text generally
says To do something: then these are followed by numbered steps.
Sometimes writers remember to type the colon at the end, sometimes they
don't. So we thought building the colon into the autonumber format with
Position set to End of Paragraph will do the trick.

Unfortunately, the colon shows up at the right margin, regardless of the
length of the heading. The paratag's alignment is set to Left. Is there
a way to make the terminal colon show up right where the text ends?

 Thanks in advance,

Re: cross reference vs variables

2008-02-20 Thread Rick Quatro
False.

Just to mix things up, the next question will appear in the form of a
 statement.

There is very little difference between cross-references and variables.

 Discuss.

Re: Text string in title case?

2008-02-29 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Paul,

For Windows FrameMaker, you can use FrameScript. If anyone is interested in
a script like this, please contact me offlist. Thanks.

Rick Quatro
Carmen Publishing

www.frameexpert.com

 Hi Tina,

This is impossible with FrameMaker alone. I thought perhaps Spell
Catcher could handle it, as it does have commands for changing case
to Title style, but even that simply capitalises the first letter of
 each word.

A job for AppleScript perhaps? (NG to you unless you use Mac
 FrameMaker.)

 I found a script at http://bbs.applescript.net/viewtopic.php?
id=13297 that, in addition to changing case to Title style, can also
set a bunch of specified definite and indefinite articles,
conjunctions, and prepositions that don't start a sentence to
lowercase. Something the script author has called Mixed style.

I'm not a programmer, but with a little head scratching, I managed to
edit this script so that it searches an open FrameMaker document and
changes all paragraphs tagged Heading1 or whatever you like to
 Mixed style. Works a treat!

Incidentally, for Title style (or what CMOS calls Headline style),
do you follow the Microsoft style of not capitalising prepositions of
four or fewer letters. Or Apple's style of not capitalising
prepositions of three or fewer letters. Or CMOS's recommendation of
 lowercasing prepositions regardless of length?

Styles - you gotta love 'em.

 Paul

Re: Text string in title case?

2008-02-29 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Peter,

This is one of the strengths of MIF: that you can get an ASCII
representation of your FM document and do manipulations like this. However,
the advantage of FrameScript (and the FDK) is that you can work directly on
the FrameMaker document (or book) without risk of corrupting the MIF file.
FrameScript has built-in string functions as well as the ability to use
regular expressions.

I recently did a TitleCase script that used an INI file for exceptions, both
for acronyms that should stay uppercase and words that should be lowercase.

[Upper]
ADA=
II=
III=
IV=
HVAC=
TV=
XY=
UCLA=
ICU=
PA=
HUCLA=
USC=
LAC=

[Lower]
and=
to=

The script could be restricted to processing particular paragraph formats in
order to limit its scope. Another useful feature is that each paragraph that
is changed can be written to a hyperlinked log file. This would allow you to
check what was actually changed, and to jump to a changed paragraph if
necessary.

Depending on the scope of a problem, sometimes you have to fix things like
this by hand. However, for anyone that uses FrameMaker on a near daily
basis, FrameScript is definitely worthwhile to learn. I am amazed by how
much people do by hand with FrameMaker.

In the days of FM/unix, before book-wide search/replace and other
come-lately power features, something like this would be done with
fmbatch and one or more of GREP, AWK, and SED text-manipulation tools.

The general plan was to use control fmbatch with a unix script to
convert all appropriate .fm files to MIF, then perform the
text-crunching on the MIF files, then reconvert the MIF files back to
 .fm with fmbatch.

If there's enough volume to repay the effort, something similar would
work today with mif2go from omsys.com, dobatch from cudspan, dzbatcher
from datazone.com, or FM2MIF (a new free utility that installs under
FM's File Utilities menu option, from dtptools.com, to convert
directories-full of .fm files to MIF). I believe mif2go's MIF
converter is free; dobatch and dzbatcher are free. All but FM2MIF work
 like fmbatch.

Instead of the unix tools, Perl or other newer text-manglers can do
the find/replace, perhaps with the assistance of GREP.

Converting .fm to MIF is the first step.

The second step would be to find all the ALL CAPS titles in all the
MIFs, collect them into a single-column list from which you can remove
the duplicates, and create a second column with the precise conversion
for each title - this would settle style issues over which title words
 to make all lowercase, etc.

The third step would be to find and replace every instance of the
uppercase titles with their title cased partner in the MIF, without
damaging the MIF file's integrity. This may take some care in cases
where the titles break across lines, etc.

Finally, you'd use one of the fmbatch-replacements to reconstruct .fm
 files from the MIFs.

I'm not a coder or scripter. Heck, my long-term and short-term memory
aren't that good anymore. BUT, it's hard to forget a proven tool-chain
 process like this.G

 HTH

 Peter
