Have you tried the orwo? I prefer the orwo stocks. Also fuji neopan is an
amazing stock and maybe now will start carrying it in the US. I agree that
7363 is a good stock but there are other options too. If anything we should
start pressuring fuji reps in ny and la to carry neopan...

ORWO may have something similar to 7302, but they have no HiCon stocks

 7363.

I concure. I have heard through the rumormill that the Motion Picture
division of Kodak has continued to remain profitable. Since all of the
equipment used to manufacture the actual film is an older technology,
it
wouldn't make much sense to liquidate it. The value would be little more
than the scrap value of its parts, so it would seem reasonable to keep it
operational, and therefore profitable. I wouldn't expect too much more
RD,
but as long as there is a Kodak company based in Rochester, I don't think
we'll see the disappearance of film. However, it also seems likely that
when
the plug is pulled on film stock, and more importantly, the commercial
manufacture of processing chemistry, it will be sudden.

Then again, there's some companies down the chain (post-houses that
specialize in film scans, for one) that rely on film as a continued
capture
medium might step up at that point to purchase some of the manufacturing
facilities and silver-halide related patents. If they could purchase
things
for pennies-on-the-dollar (as they might through a liquidation), they
could
then run these units at a very low profit, or even a slight loss, if only
to
keep the filmstock flowing as long as possible. I'm not holding my

on this scenario, but my fingers are crossed. As I write this I'm
realizing
just how difficult it would be to convince a lender to financially
support a
plan to vertically integrate a post-house into a declining industrial
field.

[Frameworks] Community Dark Room Bay Area

2011-10-01 Thread eric stewart
Does anyone know of a community dark room in the bay area that is friendly
towards folks processing cine-film? I have been processing at Rayco, but
they have been charging me to use a private room and it is getting rather
cost prohibitive. I am only processing black and white negative so my
chemical needs are fairly benign. Any advice on places to process would be
greatly appreciated.

Also if anyone has been waiting for the perfect time to start a darkroom,
lets do it. I have lots of supplies!!!

I asked the fuji rep in new york and he said that it wouldn't be profitable
enough in the US for fuji to bother... unless Kodak went under...The more
pressure we put on them, the more demand they will perceive. There is still
a pretty good demand for black and white film. Perhaps fuji will change it's
tune now...it's definitely better than sitting around and whining about
kodak's demise.

re Fuji Neopan: I assume it would be way more expensive than Kodaks offering
which is why they probably don't bother.

I assume Fred is right and that Kodak will file for Chapter 11 protection
assuming the patent sale doesn't go thru. To be honest it might be a good thing
in a way, as selling the patents seems a bit like selling the family silver. I
get the impression the guy running the place is just trying to stretch things

Re: [Frameworks] Kodak filing for bankruptcy?

2011-10-01 Thread 40 Frames
I don't know about the cost of Neopan motion picture stock elsewhere in the
world... (Neopan still film is relatively cheap in the states, cheaper than
Ilford by a lot and at the price point of films like Efke and Arista)
but in the states ORWO is expensive by comparison.

As it is today, 7363 is $51 USD per 400' roll, and if you get an educational
discount it's around $40. And its Ortho, so you can
process under safe light.

ORWO stock was (last I checked) almost double this price. So, while there
does exist alternatives, they cost more. And I don't see
a stock in the product line that would be comparable to 7363.

BTW Seth, if you want to draft and circulate a letter asking Fuji to
distribute Neopan in the US, I'd sign it. And I'll overlook your
comment about whinning.

Re: [Frameworks] Anti-static film cleaner recs

2011-10-01 Thread Todd Eacrett

For a looper you need something fast drying. These days that means either an
isopropanol or perchloroethylene base.

I've used the Edwal version of the latter to clean footage on a looper and it
worked well: you can see the cleaner evaporate before it winds into the
take-up.

Perch is dry-cleaning fluid, so if you know a dry-cleaner, you could score some
on the cheap and dissolve a bit of paraffin in it to lubricate the film.

Kodak used to suggest pure isopropyl with paraffin as a cleaner/lubricant...

Hi all,
Any recommendations for anti-static film cleaner? I'm running some
continuous loops and the film-tech website seems to say that filmguard can't
be used with endless platter loops.
Thanks!

How much would it cost them just to ship a few cases to their U.S. offices?
And put it on their stock list?

Neopan MP used to be available in Europe, but not sure any more.
