[Frameworks] Spotlight on Guatemala: I Will be Murdered Now Available for Educational Purchase

2014-04-10 Thread Daniela Bajar
Dear Friends,

I just wanted to share Pragda’s fantastic new title I WILL BE MURDERED with
you. It is now available for educational purchase.

“Astonishing.” - GQ

“A gripping, twisty thriller.” - John Dugdale, THE SUNDAY TIMES

2014 New Release I WILL BE MURDERED is a gripping, edge-of-your seat
documentary that portrays the astonishing, real-life story of a lawyer who
launched a personal crusade in search of justice, and brought his country to
the brink of chaos. Essential-viewing for courses in International Politics,
Human Rights, Hispanic or Latin American Studies, and Sociology.

I WILL BE MURDERED
A film by Justin Webster
UK, Spain / 2013 / 52 min / English and Spanish with English subtitles
Universities, Colleges, and Institutions $350
Public Libraries $89
Watch the trailer and order: http://www.pragda.com/films/i-will-be-murdered

Guatemala 2009. Wealthy and charismatic lawyer Rodrigo Rosenberg Marzano was
shot and killed near his home. A few days later, a YouTube video, in which
Rosenberg pronounces his contempt for the situation in his country and its
government, is uploaded. The video closes with Rosenberg’s words,
“Unfortunately, ladies and gentleman, you are watching this video because I was
murdered by the President Álvaro Colom.”

The video quickly went viral and led to a national crisis, rallying massive
demonstrations and protests in favor of justice and against then president
Álvaro Colom. With streets and squares filled with banners calling for his
resignation, Colom called in help from the UN-formed commission against
impunity, the CICIG, and high-profile Spanish attorney Carlos Castresana.

There began a brilliant investigation, a journey into Rosenberg’s soul and
Guatemala’s hell, that after multiple twists and turns, reached a stunning
conclusion.

Shelly Silver: Intimate Visions and Public Spaces

“By staking her right to documentary material as well as fictional writing,
Shelly Silver sizes up the likelihood of an imaginary point of view reaching a
truth more subtle than autobiographical truth.” —Cinéma du Réel

Jack H. Skirball Series
This screening of two works by Shelly Silver begins with What I’m Looking For
(2004, digital video, 15 min.), the second in her trilogy of fictional essay
films shot in public spaces, which explores the relationship between a female
photographer and subjects
met on the Internet. The program continues with
Touch (2013, digital video, 68 min.), in which a gay man recounts, mostly in
Mandarin, his return to New York’s Chinatown after 50 years in order to care
for his dying mother. Like the narrator—a librarian, cataloguer and
recorder—the city has changed and yet the past still haunts familiar streets.
The character is an invention of the filmmaker, but as her narrator confides,
“words make the impossible imaginable, therefore possible.” Currently chair of
Columbia’s Visual Arts Program, Silver has utilized video, film and still
photography to investigate contested territories between public and private,
narrative and documentary, the watcher and the watched.

Funded in part with generous support from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts
and Sciences.

Curated by Steve Anker and Bérénice Reynaud.

[Frameworks] Nam June Paik writings?

2014-04-10 Thread Gregory Zinman
Hello,

I am currently editing, with John Hanhardt and Edith Decker-Phillips, the
forthcoming Nam June Paik: Selected Writings (The MIT Press).

The editors are looking for examples of significant writing by Paik, reflecting
his creative and critical thinking, including his ideas about art and media,
history, politics, and technology. We are currently visiting numerous archives
and collections for relevant materials, but would appreciate any information
regarding where other writings of Paik may be sourced, or if individuals are in
possession of writings by or correspondence from Paik that they would be
willing to contribute to the collection.

Thank you for your help, and please do not hesitate to contact me with any
questions.

Greatly appreciated,

Greg
