[Frameworks] Max MSP/Jitter

2014-08-05 Thread Warren Cockerham
Frameworkers:

I'm looking for research suggestions of artists, filmmakers, and works that
utilize Max MSP/Jitter as their main software tool. I am specifically
interested in FILM and analog video makers and works (experimental,
abstract, avant-garde) that have used Max to explore or investigate the
moving image medium via digital processes that resemble or have a direct
lineage to analog processes. I know there are many instances of hardware
modifications utilizing Max (and those are welcomed suggestions). But, I'm
really interested in standalone Max patches or apps that resemble analog
processes. Expanded Cinema, video installation, live or interactive
performances (something beyond VJ stuff), and theater/black box works are
all welcomed suggestions.

thanks in advance!

Re: [Frameworks] Max MSP/Jitter

2014-08-05 Thread David Han
A lot of work that I've seen in Max MSP/Jitter that attempts to mimic analog
processes are making use of Vade's v002 GLSL shaders, which he offers as free
Quartz Composer plugins here:
http://v002.info/

To see what these shaders look like when applied to moving images, check out:
http://vimeo.com/groups/voo2

and here is a video of the v002 app itself: http://abstrakt.vade.info/?p=272

With the Syphon app (which can also be downloaded from v002.info), one can
easily use these plugins in Quartz Composer and then bring them into Max MSP or
any other Syphon supported development environment.

I've made use of these plugins for some of my work. Most notably, I used a
version of the 'analog glitch' shader to transition between images in this
project: http://vimeo.com/23803294

2014-08-05 Thread Al Matthews

Nice.

Lynn-Marie Kirby, too, has a fair amount of prior work in MAX-Jitter.

Couple thoughts more:

Anton Marini wrote some shaders and other processes for MAX to resemble
film temperature profiles (technicolor-1, 2, 3, bleach bypass, etc).

( I see David Han has now also mentioned Anton (vade), and Quartz Composer.
There is also, in that series, a mockup of a Rutt-Etra, if I'm not
mistaken. )

Lots of other people use, or have, or once used MAX, and I have some
archived patches in this vein I'd be happy to share if you like. And, there
are many others who use PD instead, or Islandora, Processing, Field, or any
number of other environments -- , fluxus, extempore, choose your poison
-- MAX is great and derived from IRCAM with a long history, but it is
indeed a big world by now. Though it sounds like you need MAX patches in
particular.

Hit me up off list if you care for a trickle of suggestions known to me.

Abigail Child mentioned that the structure of “Surface Noise” is based on the
Fibonacci sequence when she screened it at the Harn Museum a decade ago. I’m
not sure I understood exactly what she meant—I hadn’t sensed it in watching the
film—but I’d be curious to look again with that in mind. (She mentioned it in
QA after the screening.)

Dan Sandin’s Spiral Series 1-5 are Fibonacci algorithms driving a
vector-graphics display. Not film, but lovely. Spiral 5 is especially striking.
I think the Data Bank has them.

Roberta Friedman and Grahame Weinbren's excellent FUTURE PERFECT from 1978 uses
a Fibonacci series (among others) as a basis for some precisely placed
graphical forms marked onto (and conceptually relating to) the film's

*FILM AS FILM: THE COLLECTED WRITINGS OF GREGORY J. MARKOPOULOS Edited by
Mark Webber. Foreword by P. Adams Sitney The Visible Press, September 2014*

*Film as Film: The Collected Writings of Gregory J. Markopoulos *contains
some ninety out-of-print or previously unavailable articles by the
Greek-American filmmaker who, as a contemporary of Kenneth Anger, Stan
Brakhage and Andy Warhol, was at the forefront of a movement that
established a truly independent form of cinema. Beginning with his early
writings on the American avant-garde and auteurs such as Dreyer, Bresson
and Mizoguchi, it also features numerous essays on Markopoulos’ own
practice, and on films by Robert Beavers, that were circulated only in
journals, self-published editions or programme notes. The texts become
increasingly metaphysical and poetic as the filmmaker pursued his ideal of
Temenos, an archive and screening space to be located at a remote site in
the Peloponnese where his epic final work could be viewed in harmony with
the Greek landscape. Gregory J. Markopoulos (1928-1992) is a unique figure
in film history, whose life’s work stands in testament to his strength of
vision and commitment to the medium.

“This collection of writings by a key figure of the New American Cinema
complements, illuminates and extends an incomparable body of work. Equal
parts theory, criticism and mythical prose, the texts reflect the charisma
and originality of its author – and his enduring romanticism. Brandished by
the same absolutes and passion that fuel his films, *Film as Film* is a
seminal addition to film scholarship and film history.”
- Andréa Picard, Toronto International Film Festival

“For the first time the full depths of Gregory Markopoulos’ rigorous
imagination can be fathomed. Film as Film is an indispensable companion to
Markopoulos’ unique cinema and a fascinating chronicle of his probing
thoughts on filmmaking.”
- Haden Guest, Harvard Film Archive
