Hi Frameworks Members
As research for an article I am writing, I'm curious to learn more of films
that might take the form of animated conversations -- audio interviews
rendered visually by animation -- or perhaps more broadly animated or collage
works based on extant audio of speech (whether found or deliberately recorded).

Thank you for giving it your consideration!
Warm regards,Jon

Re: [Frameworks] exporting audio from Final Cut for optical print

2013-01-29 Thread Jodie Mack

Hey Alee!Do you mean the audio fell out of sync after burning the optical track
or when you brought the file back into FCP?Aside from frame rate discrepancies,
it could be a 44.1 vs. 48 khz issue. If you play a 44.1 file in a 48 sequence
(and vice versa), you will experience sync/speed issues. If you mean on the
optical track, I would double check with your technician to make sure he/she
didn't pull anything up or down. Good luck! Let us know when you solve the
problem!JMJodie MackAssistant Professor of AnimationDartmouth College, Film and

Re: [Frameworks] contemporary animation texts

2013-01-17 Thread Jodie Mack

Hi Stephanie!
Being a CalArts grad, I'm sure you know Maureen Furniss' THE ANIMATION BIBLE
and also her READER IN ANIMATION STUDIES. These are definitely go-to classics,
and I rarely teach ananimation class without assigning texts from those books.
Robert Russett, co-author of EXPERIMENTAL ANIMATION with Cecile Starr,
completed HYPERANIMATION: DIGITAL IMAGES AND VIRTUAL WORLDS in 2009.
Chris Robinson, artistic director of the Ottawa International Animation
Festival also has a few recent books:ANIMATORS UNEARTHED: A GUIDE TO THE BEST
OF CONTEMPORARY ANIMATIONUNSUNG HEROES OF ANIMATION (co-written with Steve
Reinke)JAPANESE ANIMATION: TIME OUT OF MINDESTONIAN ANIMATION: BETWEEN GENIUS
AND ULTRA ILLITERACY
Paul Wells, author of UNDERSTANDING ANIMATION, also put out another book fairly
recently, RE-IMAGINING ANIMATION: THE CHANGING FACE OF THE MOVING IMAGE.
You may also want to consider the catalogs from recent shows:WATCH ME MOVE
(Barbican)STAN VANDERBEEK: THE CULTURE INTERCOM (MIT, Contemporary Arts Museum
Houston)QUAY BROTHERS: ON DECIPHERING THE PHARMACIST'S PRESCRIPTION FOR LIP
READING PUPPETS (MoMA)
Here are a few neat books on individual animators written in the past ten
years:PAUL SHARITS (Beauvais)OPTICAL POETRY: THE LIFE AND WORK OF OSKAR
FISCHINGER (Moritz)THE CABINET OF JAN SVANKMAJER: THE PENDULUM, THE PIT, AND
OTHER PECULIARITIES (Hartel, Blickle, Matte)ART THAT MOVES: THE WORK OF LEN
LYE (Horrocks)(That said, FIGURES OF MOTION, an old collection of Lye's
writings, is one of my favorite books of all time. It's out of print, but they
have it at the CalArts library - maybe even at Pitzer, I'm not sure.)
And, this isn't necessarily an animation-specific text... But, an article by
Erika Balsom - Brakhage's Sour Grapes, or Notes on Experimental Cinema in the
Art World - does a great jobsumming up many of the complications of
experimental film/animation's straddling of the gallery and cinema worlds.
If you clarify the focus of your class (production vs. studies or even certain
artists you're interested in), I might be able to come up with more relevant
texts for you. I would also bet real money that Marcin Gizycki, also on this
list, has a huge bounty of suggestions.
I hope this is helpful.

[Frameworks] 16mm -- HD -- 16mm

2012-07-31 Thread Jodie Mack

Calling all contemporary workflow afficionados!

I am working on a new 16mm project and considering making an
EDL from a telecine via Cinema Tools and FCP. From the EDL, I will cut my
negative and make a sound print
via A/B rolls.

This will be my first time using a telecine and Cinema Tools
to edit, and most of the information I’ve found involves a two-transfer
telecine process (all dailies in SD first then select shots from EDL in HD).

My shooting ratio is fairly low. I’d like to avoid
transferring twice and use my HD edit as my video master. So, if possible, I’d
like to just go ahead and transfer my rushes to HD Pro Res 24fps (no window
burn) with Evertz keylog file, edit in FCP, generate an EDL, and cut my
negative without running into any issues (3:2 pulldown or otherwise). Can any
of you foresee any problems with this simplified, online-all-the-time workflow?

Am I being naïve? I feel like this method could work for me
- the two transfer process seems designed for large-scale productions.

If any of you have worked this way or teach this workflow,
I’d surely appreciate any advice you can offer.

All the best,

Jodie Mack
