[Frameworks] Light Press Grants 2021

2020-10-20 Thread Jon Behrens
Hey Frameworkers I wanted to let you all know that despite the crazy pandemic
times we are all living in ICS is going strong and would like you to know that
you only have till December 1st to apply for the next round of LightPress
grants given out on Jan 1st 2021

About ICS LightPress Grants

Every six months, in January and July, the Interbay Cinema Society gives grants
to 10 filmmakers working with 16mm or 35mm film to have 4K high resolution
scans of their work made through LightPress, a transfer house in Seattle.

We give grants to established and emerging filmmakers. Students are not
eligible.

Grants are given for 3 hours of scanning. Note that the scans are not “in real
time,” so how much material can be scanned depends on a lot of variables. This
is a $1200 value.

Since July 2016 ICS has given out more then $120,000 in these grants.

Filmmakers who receive grants must use them within the six- month period
specified, or the grants expire.

Apply now:

Thanks very much

Hi here is a thought, you might consider just buying a new motor all together.
Might be cheaper because there are tones of them out there.

It doesn't have to be technical since I would like a broad range of ideas and

I saw a post by Gregory Zinman on his new book, and became curious….

We give grants to established and emerging filmmakers. Students are not
eligible.

Grants are given for 3 hours of scanning. Note that the scans are not “in real
time,” so how much material can be scanned depends on a lot of variables. This
is a $1200 value.

Filmmakers who receive grants must use them within the six- month period
specified, or the grants expire.

I would have taken the $40 entry and bought lottery tickets were I stand a

Dear All,

turning my attention to the project now.

I had a crazy idea of shooting some Kodachrome. Any way to purchase this

[Frameworks] ENGAUGE Experimental Film Festival

2018-07-06 Thread Jon Behrens

HI Frameworkers, I am happy to announce an all new arm of the Interbay Cinema
Society - ICS - It is an experimental film festival and this is going to be an
annual event, and this is going to be our first year I encourage experimental
filmmakers from all over the world to submit their work.

“Engauge”, a new experimental film festival based in Seattle, WA, invites you
to submit your work.

Created to highlight and augment the work of the Lightpress Grants offered
twice yearly by Interbay Cinema Society, “Engauge” will consider only films
that originated on film. That means that somewhere in the filmmaking process,
you the filmmaker actually worked directly with celluloid, either by loading it
into a camera and shooting film, or looking through and selecting found film
footage, or directly scratching, painting, drawing onto or collaging footage.

We are interested primarily in short films, since we have a limited number of
festival slots available. We are also committed to a festival that reflects the
international and diverse nature of experimental work.

Each film accepted for screening will received a $200 honorarium. No Entry Fee.

Festival Deadline: September 15, 2018.
Festival Dates: November 8-10, 2018.

For more information please visit our website
http://interbaycinemasociety.org/film-festival/

Thanks very much

TO THE MASSART COMMUNITY:

The faculty and staff of the Film/Video department demand that Professor Saul

It is because of Professor Levine’s very public attacks and misrepresentations

He has bullied his colleagues and created an abusive working environment over

He has derailed and destroyed important discussions about urgent departmental

punish Professor Levine for screening his film or any other film he has shown
over the years.
No one forced him to retire. The decision to retire is entirely Professor
Levine’s.

We recognize Professor Levine as a brilliant artist and programmer and are
thankful for his
contributions to the department and to Massart. It is extremely painful to see
his toxic rant
against the department, besmearing the College and insulting us by name while
claiming
himself as the victim.

As artists, teachers and mentors, it is our responsibility to stand up when we
are bullied and to
treat each other with respect. It is also our duty to foster an open,
respectful, and collegial
environment for our students.

Hi Ed
I have always used a black 3 gallon bucket with a lid, works great for sloppy
16mm hand processing , lots of artifacts!

Have fun

There are a bunch of Russian LOMO 16mm tanks on ebay right now starting at

feet at a time when developing so you then have to splice the two parts
together of a 100' spool after processing for projection. These are probably
your best bet. Once in a blue moon you will also see the large steel 100 foot
slot type developing reels for sale from the 1940s. These work well too but you
have to always remember to insert the unprocessed film emulsion side out.

Subject: [Frameworks] Developing Tanks for 16mm

Hi Frameworkers,

I'm looking for some advice of developing tanks for 16mm film. I've processed
quite a bit of S8mm rolls using a 2x120 tank and liked the hand-processing
artifacts to clean processing ratio, but thinking 100' of 16mm would be too
much for this sized tank.

Does anyone have a recommendation?

I'm thinking of the 3x120 version made by Paterson:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/40339-REG/Paterson_PTP117_Multi_Reel_5_Tank_Super.html?ap=y=1876%2C52934714882%2C%2C=Cj0KCQjwnqzWBRC_ARIsABSMVTM45DbAOA0agp5qnSp96KbnX7_0A_pzfSc6UWlTMtfXR3qRK4bB9FcaAtyxEALw_wcB

-OR-

The 5x120 version also by Paterson (too much?):
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/40340-REG/Paterson_PTP118_Multi_Reel_8_Tank_Super.html?ap=y=1876%2C52934714882%2C%2C=Cj0KCQjwnqzWBRC_ARIsABSMVTOC1Y0dkI8OjXZLTZGrtn-EfxHbCAjA0-xcABHOXwBh5IiOINOhRoUaAol3EALw_wcB

We have a 35mm Movieola to give away here in SF.

Works perfectly. Needs one screw for viewer housing.

Peripheral Vision

Vom Rande her

In his films, Jan Soldat portraits people whose

private life defer from the social norm. The

practice of sadomasochism, or love to animals

does not find understanding by many, and thus

these persons have been confronted with social

marginalization. Watching the films of Jan Soldat

may be even more disturbing, because he does not

work with theater-like enactments as it is known

from many trendy productions about the SM scene.

Jan Soldat meets his leading characters in their

private life. Instead of creating the illusion of

sexual phantasies or fulfilled desires, the

filmmaker is interested in the ordinary routines

of daily life. And here, he creates exceptional

captivating pictures, as he meets these men at

eye level and gives them space to express

themselves, making them true protagonists. And,

the ways he frames and later on edits the scenes

with much love to those details, he creates the

attention that is needed to listen to the stories

told and depicted in front of the camera.

The artist will be available for QA. German with English subtitles.

 Dear Frameworkers,
I'm hoping one of you can solve a mystery for me. I was given some found

family, except for this one small section.

 http://vimeo.com101359349

I think this footage might be home movies from the Woodstock festival, or
maybe some other festival around the same time near water. It is completely
out of context with the rest, and I think it may have been recorded from
projection. The original footage bought from the gypsy was shot on S8 then
later transfered to video by projection so there's already distortion. It
starts with a strange illustration of covered wagons, and later a title that
says Jefferson Airplane. The oddest thing is in the end there are some large
triangle floatation devises. If this is from Woodstock I would think these
floats would of made it into the documentary. So, if anyone can solve this
 mystery please let me know.

It is POSSIBLE to do a direct print, but the proper print stock no longer
exists. There are various lab intermediate stocks that can be used, but
you wind up with a print that is thinner and less rugged and still has
more contrast than the original. Go the interneg route.

Telecine (transfers to “video”) is limiting — scanning to data files is the
 best way to go.

But if that’s not the case, Kinetta Archival in NYC does 3.3K scans (5x the
res of HD) from all formats, 8 to 35mm. While our specialty is archival work
 — damaged film, shrunken film, and contrasty film — prints and reversal
original — we also do new film that has no problems.

We are not the cheapest, but we do high-quality work, and are
artist-friendly. 3.3K scans from 16mm, graded and output as ProRes (your
choice 2K, or HD pillar boxed, or for S16, HD) are $.68/foot, with you
supplying a hard drive for the files. $210 minimum.

Frame Discreet in Toronto does excellent work with 2K frame-accurate scans.
They are very artist-friendly cinematographers that do high-quality

Still, if you get an old-style video transfer you're stuck with interlace

The problem is that very few of the digital scanning systems will work
properly scanning a print or reversal original. The Kinetta does lovely
work from a reversal original but few other machines will.

I don't know anything about the Super-8 projectors.

I am sorry to report that Rocky Mountain Film Labs shut down about two
years back. They did lovely work and were always free to explain what
they were doing in great detail.

If I had E-6, I'd try running it through pincryptol yellow and then developing
by inspection in D-76. Otherwise I'd take a few clip tests to develop in
D-76 to get the development time correct. Develop until you get a nice black
highlight with some highlight detail, don't worry about the shadows.

 Hello,

My name is Adrian. I live in Austin, TX and I'm currently a student at my
community college, Austin Community College (or ACC), and I need some help
as to where a good starting point would be when it comes to researching
Bolex cameras. Yesterday I pitched an idea to my two RTF professors about
starting up a club that's involved in investing in vintage film equipment
for the RTF students at ACC to have access to and start up an experimental
film portion of the RTF program. One professor absolutely loved the idea of
having that aspect as part of the RTF Program and deeply encouraged me to
actually make this club happen. But on the other hand my other professor
gave me the harsh realities as to why that would never work. Unfortunately I
won't go into detail as to why that wouldn't work, but I left his office
with my head pointed to the sky because I believe it can actually work. I
mean why not right? My goal is learn to how to use and know as much
information about old Bolex cameras. I want film to still be alive and used
by students, regardless if they're from a community college or not, to not
only have on their résumé but as an amazing experience as well. A student
that diversifies themselves by having the experience of both worlds would
truly give them a wider perspective in the film industry. So Im reaching out
to anybody that is willing to give me a good starting point I would most
appreciate it! Please anybody! Thank you.
