[Frameworks] 60 Hz frequency in a 50 Hz Environment
To the Workers of the Frame, Good morning from Israel, I'm here conducting a workshop on titling and have run into a slight issue with the relationship between the standard 50 Hz frequency and my animation motor (ARRIFLEX Stop Motion Control Console Cat No. 339-337) which was built to run off of 60 Hz. With the advancement of each frame by the controller, the rotation of the shutter does not complete the intended 180 degree turn, but rather lands shy of a 'full' rotation and as such, after about 30 frames the shutter begins to rest in the open position. I'm writing to ask if anyone has ever dealt with such an dilemma effectively? I'm rarely in this part of the world, and perhaps was a bit naive to assume that the step down transformer would handle the voltage and the Hz. Any information would be appreciated, likewise if you are in the area, feel free to stop by with a winding Bolex and save the day ;) Best, Steve Cossman ◅ *MONO NO AWARE* 501c3 Cinema Arts Non-Profit Organization est. 2007 | Film Stock | Equipment | Lab Facilities | Workshops | a: 33 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn New York <https://www.google.com/maps/dir//33+Flatbush+Ave,+Brooklyn,+NY+11217/@40.6877184,-73.9819882,17z/data=!4m17!1m7!3m6!1s0x89c25bb25464b153:0x663d26fd9a518085!2s33+Flatbush+Ave,+Brooklyn,+NY+11217!3b1!8m2!3d40.6877184!4d-73.9797995!4m8!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x89c25bb25464b153:0x663d26fd9a518085!2m2!1d-73.9797995!2d40.6877184!3e2> e: mononoawarefilm.com c: +1 2674561143 <%2B1%20267%20456-1143> in:gram <https://www.instagram.com/mononoawarefilm/> <%2B1%20267%20456-1143> press: New York Times <https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/11/nyregion/a-brooklyn-film-school-where-the-digital-revolution-didnt-happen.html>, ViceTV <https://video.vice.com/en_us/video/the-brooklyn-film-organization-bringing-analog-back-to-the-masses/584f0f243d8095724ccdaf1e>, The Brooklyn Rail <https://brooklynrail.org/2018/11/film/Mixed-Use-MONO-NO-AWARE> ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks

A few water marks, but for their first time in the lab processing, to be cross processing and have these results its pretty good, could have used a darker orange filter, but it was overcast and we couldn't forfeit the light. ◅ *MONO NO AWARE* 501c3 Cinema Arts Non-Profit Organization est. 2007 | Film Stock | Equipment | Lab Facilities | Workshops | a: 33 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn New York <https://www.google.com/maps/dir//33+Flatbush+Ave,+Brooklyn,+NY+11217/@40.6877184,-73.9819882,17z/data=!4m17!1m7!3m6!1s0x89c25bb25464b153:0x663d26fd9a518085!2s33+Flatbush+Ave,+Brooklyn,+NY+11217!3b1!8m2!3d40.6877184!4d-73.9797995!4m8!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x89c25bb25464b153:0x663d26fd9a518085!2m2!1d-73.9797995!2d40.6877184!3e2> e: mononoawarefilm.com c: +1 2674561143 <%2B1%20267%20456-1143> in:gram <https://www.instagram.com/mononoawarefilm/> <%2B1%20267%20456-1143> press: New York Times <https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/11/nyregion/a-brooklyn-film-school-where-the-digital-revolution-didnt-happen.html>, ViceTV <https://video.vice.com/en_us/video/the-brooklyn-film-organization-bringing-analog-back-to-the-masses/584f0f243d8095724ccdaf1e>, The Brooklyn Rail <https://brooklynrail.org/2018/11/film/Mixed-Use-MONO-NO-AWARE> On Wed, Mar 20, 2019 at 12:13 PM Anna Kipervaser wrote: > I am often shooting on 3383; I use an 85 filter (orange to compensate for > lack of orange base in the stock and to get near true color) and rate 3383 > at 3. [Frameworks] Expressing love and gratitude. Let's celebrate our best year ever with highlights and films from 2017!
A letter from our Founder and Director, Steve Cossman Warm wishes to my friends and colleagues, I’m writing to let you know that thanks to you and your involvement with MONO NO AWARE, our community has had the best year ever. This year’s activities have earned the attention of the New York Times, (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/11/nyregion/a-brooklyn-film-school-where-the-digital-revolution-didnt-happen.html) MovieMaker Magazine, Wave Farm, and the New York State Council for the Arts (NYSCA), who recently awarded MONO preliminary funding for next year's programming! We could not have done this without your help. Whether you’re a former workshop participant, audience member, exhibiting artist, a one-time renter or a year-round friend, you’ve made a contribution that has allowed us to offer affordable workshops to over 500 participants, present a dozen in-person screenings, make cameras and projectors accessible on a weekly basis, distribute film stock and chemistry, provide critical project support, editing facilities, and given us the ability to commission new moving image works by contemporary artists. I hope that as a member of this community, you share the feeling of pride we all have in these accomplishments. With new growth comes new challenges, and somehow we manage to operate with a part-time volunteer staff, out of a small office in downtown Brooklyn. My hope is that you believe in the hard work we are doing—building a film-positive community, with affordable, all-ages and equal access to cinema tools and technology (http://mononoawarefilm.com/) — (http://mononoawarefilm.com/) and that you are able to show your support with a tax-deductible donation. Your generous contribution to MONO means that we can continue to empower our community members, engage with a diverse audience and provide critical support to the production and exhibition of films by under-recognized voices and artists. There is nothing quite like the community surrounding MONO NO AWARE and no other organization is as active in the education of traditional film making, offering continued support through multiple initiatives. MONO's ability to offer extremely affordable rates gives a diverse group of artists access to all the materials necessary; from the film stock itself and the camera to shoot it with, to the facilities and chemistry to process, right down to the projector and the screen to present the work on. We are a leader in commissioning, supporting and exhibiting moving image art in a variety of forms. Please consider making a special year-end donation of $50, $100, $250 or more (https://www.paypal.com/donate/?token=RnAztIGjqfG9e0_rv1pH-OX-IusbWQt7qV0gcjppIJJA10fS0Bo2BNa99UY_vxjyzcztdm=US=US) — your contribution will have a direct impact on our upcoming year. All donations are tax-deductible, (https://www.paypal.com/donate/?token=RnAztIGjqfG9e0_rv1pH-OX-IusbWQt7qV0gcjppIJJA10fS0Bo2BNa99UY_vxjyzcztdm=US=US) and for those local to the greater NYC area, a contribution comes with a personal invitation to our special 2018 kick-off party with great music, hot food, friends and a special slide-show detailing the new lab space / facilities that we are building for you. Thank you for again your continued support and friendship. If you have a moment, take a look below to explore just a few of the highlights of our 2017. [Frameworks] A bit of good news out of New York // Celebrate 10 years with us
Hello Frameworkers, Some of you may have already received this email through other social means, my apologies if you are receiving this twice, I'm excited to share a bit of positive news : ) Last year MONO NO AWARE, <http://mononoawarefilm.com/> the cinema-arts non-profit in Brooklyn New York, received a donation-in-kind of an *entire motion picture laboratory from Filmworkers Lab in Dallas, Texas. * There are less than half a dozen motion picture laboratories functioning in the US today, so with our 501c3 status, this allows us the unique opportunity to open the first ever full service non-profit motion picture lab in the United State <https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mononoaware/mono-no-aware-film-lab>s, completely dedicated filmmakers and artists of the moving image. We also received *the remaining parts library from Oxberry in South Orange NJ *and are happy to help any artist-run lab space, independent filmmaker or University replace needed components to keep their machines up and running. This forum has been an essential resource for me and the organization MONO NO AWARE for the last ten years. My hope is that the facility we are building will continue to support first-time filmmakers, practicing filmmakers, preservationists and exhibiting artists allowing MONO to play a larger role in the greater landscape of moving image production. To add the services of linear processing, film cleaning, and scanning to our current facilities, atop education and exhibition initiatives is a great undertaking, so I'm asking that members of Frameworkers please share this news with friends, family, students, colleagues and those who have a deep seeded interest in film. If there are any questions about the specific equipment or services, please direct them to this email : mononoawaref...@gmail.com This project and the wonderful community that has grown around it have been the greater part of my life for the last decade. Sharing this news helps to support not only the efforts of MONO but the education / production / preservation of our moving image culture. As part of our tenth anniversary for MONO NO AWARE, we have organized a massive cinema-arts festiva <http://mononoawarefilm.com/calendar/?view=calendar=November-2016>l with 21 events throughout 3 boroughs of New York City presenting the work of 150 artists, musicians, dancers, and filmmakers now through December 3rd. Please check out the calendar for more info about the full program and I hope that you can attend if you are in the greater NYC area. The first weeks have been incredible with sold out shows presenting; A rare 16mm film dual projection by Carolee Schneemann in conversation with Anthology Film Archives' Ava Tews. <https://www.facebook.com/mono.aware.9/posts/1361606577183011?pnref=story> + A program of films by Gordon Matta-Clark in conversation led by Jessamyn Fiore at ZeiherSMith Gallery. <https://www.facebook.com/mono.aware.9/posts/1362523930424609?pnref=story> + A premiere of a dance/film-performance by Lucy Kerr and Q led by Dance Films Association's Brighid Greene <https://www.facebook.com/mono.aware.9/posts/1363524073657928?pnref=story>, Taiwanese Films, Nicky Hamlyn projector performance, A Bolex workshop at Alice Austen House, and so many more. There are 10 events left in the festival leading up to our annual exhibition of expanded cinema December 2nd and 3rd. I do hope to see you at one of the events and that in the near future MONO can host, support, and exhibit you/r work here in Brooklyn, New York. Thank you all again for your support and positive encouragement, Best, Steve Cossman ◅ *MONO NO AWARE* 501c3 Cinema Arts Non-Profit Organization e: mononoawarefilm.com c: +1 267 456-1143 ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks

[Frameworks] TONIGHT : Explorations in Dimension
Frameworkers, Good morning! Its a busy day in the MONOSPHERE, gearing up for an early Intro 16mm shoot, mid-day Laser Printer Filmmaking with R. Beebe, and the cherry on top: EXPLORATIONS IN DIMENSION : Recent videos by Peter Rose - IN PERSON as part of Connectivity Through Cinema. <https://www.facebook.com/events/1195674887140092/> Very excited for Towards a Six-Dimensional Cinema, 2014-WIP, a most recent work-in-progress investigates "Six-Dimensional" video by compositing 3D videos shot with a variety of home-made rigs. Subject matter ranges from a skateboard park to the Mummer's Parade to the uncategorisably poetic. Hope you can join us this evening, Best, Steve Cossman Founder / Director MONO NO AWARE ABOUT PETER ROSE: Since 1968 Peter Rose has made over thirty films, tapes, performances and installations. Many of the early works raise intriguing questions about the nature of time, space, light, and perception and draw upon Rose’s background in mathematics and on the influence of structuralist filmmakers. He subsequently became interested in language as a subject and in video as a medium and generated a substantial body of work that played with the feel and form of sense, concrete texts, political satire, oddball performance, and a kind of intellectual comedy. Recent video installations have involved a return to an examination of landscape, time, and vision. Rose has been widely exhibited, both nationally and internationally, having been included in shows at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Biennial, the Centre Pompidou, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Film Society at Lincoln Center, and the Rotterdam International Film Festival. He has been awarded fellowships by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Pew Foundation, the Independence Foundation, and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and is fond of writing descriptions in the third person. MONO NO AWARE SCREENING SERIES: The CONNECTIVITY THROUGH CINEMA series will present the work of artists, film-makers and curators who are traveling or presenting special interactive programs in-person. Our hope is to engage the community by showing work with a focus on post-screening discussion. -- *MONO NO AWARE CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF CINEMA ARTS + BECOME INVOLVED IN 2016 * *SCREENING SUN JUNE 12TH - 7PM 'TOWARDS A SIX DIMENSIONAL CINEMA**' PETER ROSE * *WORKSHOPS 3-D STEREOSCOPIC FILMMAKING, LIQUID LIGHT PERFORMANCE, & MORE* *EQUIPMENT CAMERAS, PROJECTORS, FLATBED EDITING STATION, JK OPTICAL PRINTER* *SUPPORT BECOME A FRIEND, PARTNER, SPONSOR, OR DONATE TO OUR ORGANIZATION <http://mononoawarefilm.com/support/>* *OUR MISSION CONNECTIVITY THROUGH CINEMA WWW.MONONOAWAREFILM.COM 2016* *PRESS + ART IN AMERICA + GQ MAGAZINE <http://mononoawarefilm.com/wp-content/uploads/MNA_PRESS_GQ_TAIWAN.pdf> + IMAGINE SCIENCE <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BMxUPR-brg> + BBC WORLD NEWS <http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/20140612-the-death-of-cinema> **+* *Mono No Aware is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. <http://mononoawarefilm.com/support/>**Contributions <http://mononoawarefilm.com/support/>**for the <http://mononoawarefilm.com/support/>* *purposes of Mono No Aware must be made payable to Fractured Atlas and <http://mononoawarefilm.com/support/>**are tax-deductible to the <http://mononoawarefilm.com/support/>**extent permitted by law. <http://mononoawarefilm.com/support/>* ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks
