[Frameworks] A bolex and film in Delhi?

2020-08-28 Thread Shumona Goel
Dear Friends,

Would anyone know of a working bolex and two rolls of 16mm black and white
film available in New Delhi?

If you have any advice on how a cameraless film could be made, please also
advise.

Thanks!

Thanks for all your inputs. We did tests over the last year, whenever we
could. But shooting a documentary, and here there aren't any labs (that i
know of), so it's a little less than ideal. Bigger challenge is the monsoon
weather! Thank you again

I have begun to lose interest in festivals. I could be wrong but I have the
feeling there are too many festivals, but no progress for filmmaking. It
almost feels like funding has been diverted to platforms and access to
funding for production feels as difficult as ever. Maybe i am just out of
the loop, though. I hope i am wrong.

Re: [Frameworks] Hutton

2016-12-04 Thread Shumona Goel
As a student of Peter Hutton's, I remember distinctly, the first time I saw
Peter's films projected on film. The auditorium was full and remained in
pindrop silence through the evening length screening.

One the many things that has stayed with me since that screening, was how
he had shot a lamp post lit up at night. It was a long take, nothing moved.
I think there was some snow in the frame. He shot at 8 frames per second
and over time, you could see the movement of the light from the lamp post.

Amazing.

[Frameworks] Digital hd projection

2016-12-04 Thread Shumona Goel
Dear frameworkers, ,

We are installing a film in Cochin, India.

The film was originally shot on 16mm black and white.

We have been given an hd LCD Epson from 2012... But he image has green and
pink lines on all four edges of the frame

Do you think the year makes a difference?

Does anyone have experience projecting black and white film digitally in a
museum type of situation

Thanks for any help!

also you will need a good usb stick for the DCP, and a Linux computer to

I got a discount because they were offering everyone who was screening at
IFFLA (Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles) a discount. If I recall
correctly I paid $150 for the first copy and then $30 for additional copies
(which was basically the cost of the flash drive).

I did it once for a film festival. and it works.
you can try to use the software open DCP:
 https://www.opendcp.org/
After you install the software you can follow the instruction tutorial:
 Part 1: https://vimeo.com/69174836
 Part 2: https://vimeo.com/69174837
 Part 3: https://vimeo.com/69176054
Only problem will be that it is impossible for embed subtitles into the
 DCP package.
if you don't need subtitles, it will be perfect to use open DCP. The
 software is free.
also you will need a good usb stick for the DCP, and a Linux computer to
put the package to the usb stick.
because almost all the cinema computer is Linux system. anyway, if you
know anyone geeky enough to have a linux system installed it will be easier
to ask them to help after the DCP package is ready.
 good luck!

[Frameworks] FONT options for Titles

2015-04-14 Thread Shumona Goel
Dear Frameworks,

We have recently made a short 16mm film / Super 8 too.

We are planning to shoot the titles with an animation stand this week. We
have found the font options are very digital looking and wonder if there is
a standard font that used to be used for titles.

Sorry for the banality of this question!

Warmest,
Shumona

 Hi Shumona,
I can’t speak to whether there used to be a standard font, however, if you
see a font that you like in a film, you can use a font identifier website
 like this one: https://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/
 https://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/
Just take a screen cap and upload it and it will give you a range of fonts
that are the same or similar.
It’s my experience from having rephotographed a number of films from digital
intermediates that the harsh digital look of titles softens through
photography to 16mm or Super 8. For example, the title at the head of this,
which was generated in Photoshop and then rephotographed to 16mm (this is a
scan from 16mm). I believe this was in the Optima family:
 https://vimeo.com/60809200 https://vimeo.com/60809200
Another possible option would be to use traditional graphic design tools and
forego generating titles with a computer altogether. For example, you could
choose a font you like and search for a letraset sheet of it, etch out the
titles onto card stock and shoot them on the animation stand. I’ve done that
a few times and I think it’s pretty effective.
 Hope this helps!

I have not done that myself, so I dunno how it works and what are the
requirements for your digital material. Also I dunno how it works with the
 soundtrack then.
But the great thing is that you can get a 35mm Negative made, and from
that you could get analogue contact prints made.
Ramnord have made contact prints for me just recently (from 35mm print

And if you have concerns about the quality: The have to send samples back

just recently and it looks 100%. Also bw I have done. And the cost is
really low: Setting up will cost you 5000 Rs, and then they charge 1000 Rs
 per Minute ().
If you want to first see a test with a sample of your material, you pay
5000 Rs. If youre happy and go ahead, then they will refund those 5000.

[Frameworks] Fwd: Experimenta 2013 Plea for Support

2013-09-20 Thread Shumona Goel
Dear Friends,

Please see the below email.

Thanks in advance for your support.
Shumona

I would really appreciate your help, and that of your friends, with my plea
for Experimenta here below.

I write to you now in my capacity as the Founding Director of Experimenta -
India's first and only international festival for experimental film. Now in
its eighth edition, this year’s festival will be held in Bangalore, India
from 27th November -
1st December 2013.

Experimenta India is a groundbreaking platform that has over the years
played a
significant role in countering the hegemony of the mainstream Indian film
industry.
Through nurturing an alternative community that reflects upon, and examines
the
different traces of Indian artists’ film and video, both historical and
contemporary,
we engage in a series of projects that bring together Indian and
international film
artists with similar creative and socio-political concerns. Besides curating
EXPERIMENTA, the critically acclaimed bi-annual festival, we also showcase
Indian experimental film and video at international film festivals and art
venues
like the Tate Modern (London), the Berlinale Film festival (Berlin), Images
festival
(Toronto), EXiS festival (Seoul) amongst others.

As we are an independent festival with no formal sources of funding, this
year we
have started a unique crowd funding initiative to bring together a
community of
individuals with similar aesthetic and sociopolitical concerns. With fund
raising for
an event/platform as cutting edge as Experimenta getting more difficult
with each
year, we are now looking to friends and supporters, like you, to keep
Experimenta
alive!

The organisation we have partnered with – Orange Street - is deeply
involved in
philanthropic work, so a percentage of your donation goes towards supporting
their projects for underprivileged children in South India, and an 80G tax
exemption certificate is also offered. Further information on this is
provided on their website. https://www.orangestreet.in/aboutus.aspx

I would really appreciate if you could support this initiative by making a
donation - small or large - any amount helps! All contributors will be
given due credit on our promotional material. Simply register here
https://www.orangestreet.in/projects/experimenta and click donate. OR write
a cheque and send it to the address below.
NalandaWay Foundation
AH-206, 3rd Street,
Anna Nagar,
Chennai-40

Please remember to send your address, phone number and email id along
with the project name 'Experimenta'. You may also write 'For Experimenta'
behind
the cheque.

Do check out the fund raising promo:

Also, it would be great if you could please promote this initiative by
circulating this
plea to friends/family who, like you, understand that nurturing the arts is
key to
developing progressive values in India.

Thanks in advance for your support.

Warmly,

Shai

Ok, I just wanted to make sure before shooting. Do you have a lab you can
recommend for processing 16mm and blow up to 35mm? The blow up is not yet
confirmed (depends on sound issues) but would be good to be prepared from
now. There are no labs in Bombay that are processing black and white
anymore. Had some trouble with labs abroad as well, so any reliable
recommendations would be helpful.

You don't have to lose any. The 16mm stock will capture a full 16mm

a 1.66 or 1.85 picture with the top and bottom cut off, or if you
choose an academy gate (1.33, but many projectionists won't have that
gate and will cut off the top and bottom anyway).

[Frameworks] Film about an artist

2012-07-01 Thread Shumona Goel
Dear Frameworks,

My friend and I are working on a short film about a modern Indian painter.
We have been commissioned to make this film, so we are struggling with a
number of issues.

Although the painter is a great artist, and we have begun to admire his
work, we would not necessarily make a film about him if it were not an
opportunity to practice our form (film).

I was wondering if you may be able to suggest films that have been made
about artists for us to watch and learn how others have handled this tricky
subject.

Many thanks,
Shumona

[Frameworks] Pushing Film - Adjusting aperture

2012-05-15 Thread Shumona Goel
Dear Friends,

I am shooting super 8 with a Beaulieu 4008 Zm. I do not have a separate/
external light meter. I am relying on the built in light meter. The
Emulsion speed setting system only allows for 50, 100, 200, or 400 ASA.
If I set the Emulsion speed setting system to 400 ASA but I want to push
the film to 800 or 1600 ASA, how should i adjust the aperture so that it
would be accommodating for 800 ASA or 1600 ASA?

Many thanks,

[Frameworks] Super 8 - 35mm

2012-04-19 Thread Shumona Goel
Dear Friends,

I am shooting a film on Super 8, which I will ultimately blow up to 35mm
for projection. I am writing to you to ask whether you may know how to
choose what Super 8 colour stock to shoot on. I am curious to know what is
the apporpirate stock to start with so that I don't run into colour
correction issues later when I am blowing up to 35mm.

Many thanks for your suggestions.

[Frameworks] B W on colour stock

2011-11-28 Thread Shumona Goel
Dear Friends,

I am trying to print a 16mm black and white film onto colour stock because
there is no black and white print stock available in India, nor is there a
lab that would process it. I recently did a test that had a strong magenta
tint.

Is it even possible to get a black and white image? I am beginning to
wonder whether HD projection may just be the only route.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Warmly,
Shumona

 Subject: [Frameworks] Travelogues

 Hello you,

I am trying to pull together a list of experimental films that either fall
directly under the category of travelogue or bear witness to travel and
distance from a point of origin on the part of the filmmaker. These would
not be so much ethnographic works which are part of a sustained cultural
exchange, but films made as a result of the filmmaker passing through and
acknowledging the looming spectre/problem/pleasure of the tourist film.
Warren Sonbert, perhaps John Smith's The Hotel Diaries? I'm sure there
are others...but can you name them?

 Thanks/Grazie/Kiitos!

I'd figure it would be more likely small theaters in India would be
snatching up nicer consumer grade projectors from Best Buy Bombay
 as
quality
improves and expectations for quality drops and a point of
 acceptable
mediocrity is reached which seems to be the trend for culture of
 the

If so, I would appreciate your suggestion on font size. Also, are there
