Thank you all for the help.

Glad I caught this before more damage occurred.

Frightening stuff.

Thanks!

That's not grease. It's decomposed goo from what was once a rubberish capstan
that moved the lens.

CLEAN IT ALL OFF RIGHT NOW! AND THEN CLEAN THE FILM PATH!

That stuff will migrate into the gate and destroy the film you are projecting.

You can repair the focus knob using my method as Roger linked, or with Alain's
technique using small o-rings you should be able to get in the plumbing depart
of a "real" hardware store (not Home Depot probably).

The screw just keeps the lens from falling out if you keep moving the (working)
focus knob toward the front. Since I want to be able to change lenses for
different focal lengths readily, I just leave the screws off.

If this is like many Eikis, it has a rubber sleeve over the focussing
knob shaft. When the sleeve deteriorates, it can be replaced with
surgical tubing or silicone rubber insulation.

If your projector hasn't been lubed in a while, I would get someone to
go through the whole lubrication procedure. If the movement is run without
lube, it will wear out quickly.

2013-07-04 Thread Beebe, Roger
Super-common problem, and fairly easy to fix with a little shrink tubing (that
you can get at Lowe's or Home Depot). Dave Tetzlaff showed me the way. I've
repaired probably a dozen cameras using his method. Here are step-by-step
instructions:

Good luck!
