Hi, if the FAT32 - 4GB barrier is a problem you could try ex-FAT formatting
on drives. Entirely device dependent as to functionality!!!

read up here.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExFAT

I have found it to work fine on better quality usb flash drives, and have
used this to loop larger than 4GB files directly in a newish Vizio monitor,
however the above advice re: Teking the file/ hardware and eventual
refreshing likely is needed as it seems to stop/freeze after many hours of
play - no guarantee's but worth a look.

Media players will do what you need.
That's correct they are almost always formatted for Windows, so you
may have to reformat your thumb drives and you'll definitely have the
4gb file size limit (usually 10-20 minutes of video is the max), so if you
have long vides youll have to break them up into smaller files - and then
you get a dumb loading graphic between each file.

There are ways to hack the media players to remove the "play" or "loading"
or file name graphics at the start of each file / loop, but I've never done
it, only heard rumors.

I have also used an iPod touch to do what you are doing, but it takes a bit
of messing with the settings because it's not really made to just loop
videos all day long.

Either way, have a plan for maintenance because no digital player will work
perfectly for days/weeks/months on end and at some point it will freeze or
crash and you'll need someone there to reset or restart it or whatever.

Good luck!

Depending on the monitor, you may be able to play file for looping straight
from a USB thumb drive. I would only do this if you are able to spend a few
days researching and teching the file. Also, in my experience, you would
have to use a drive that is formatted for FAT32, meaning the file size is
limited to 4GB. I've had some trouble setting this up remotely, as it can
be hard to get the codec/container/bitrate set exactly as need be with
presenters who don't know exactly what they're working with.

Otherwise, what David said.

Your best bet is probably a mini 'digital media player', e.g.:
http://tinyurl.com/hf6a62b
http://tinyurl.com/zh7r7nw

There are various similar models on Amazon and eBay, between $25 and $45.
They're like 3" square with and HDMI output and play files off an SD card or
USB drive. They play files of a variety of codecs and containers, but mainly
H264 variants, which will look very good at an efficient size if you encode it
right (e.g. with proper setting in x264). That is, once you get to a certain
obtainable level of quality with the video file itself, it's all about the
projector.

The one drawback, which would be a caution with an optical disc player as well,
is that it may show a 'play' symbol or other screen display at the start of
each new file, with no way to repress that in the menu. If the projected piece
isn't super-long, I'd get a big USB thumb drive or SD card and make a playback
file with as many iterations as possible of the piece one after the other with
proper interval. That way you'd get many 'loops' before the player actually
repeats the file, perhaps bringing that display stuff up for a moment…

I think there may be either media players or Blu-Ray players that let you turn
off that display info, so they can go right to the beginning of the next file
(or repeat) without putting anything on screen. Alas, I don't know which, and
that's usually not the kind of info the put on the product pages. Sometimes the
vendors/importers/mfrs have instruction manuals you can DL online, which might
answer the question.

[Frameworks] 2 Video Installation Questions

2016-06-20 Thread Ken Paul Rosenthal
1) For a wall mounted, flat monitor gallery installation, what is the most
efficient, low foot print means of bringing a looping digital video image to
the screen via a file rather than a dvd player? Also, recommendations for
particular types and models of monitors?

2) A hotel I'm consulting with wants to PROJECT a video image onto a wall. The
throw is about 12 feet with the projected image being about 5 or 6 feet across.
They do NOT wish to use a monitor. The projector will be permanently installed
on a raised platform and we'd like to keep the footprint as small as possible.
So do we use a very small dvd player or is there a way to play a looping
digital file through a projector? I'd also appreciate recommendations for small
projector models.

Please email me off list (in addition to on list for everyone else) as I'm
hoping to get some suggestions, particularly on question 2, by midday pacific
coast time.

Thank you! Ken
