Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but Jonathan Horowitz's "Maxell"
(1990) might fit your criteria.

Re: [Frameworks] 40 years of VHS - short video recommendations?

2016-09-14 Thread John McAndrew
Hi Richard,

For a screening of abstract video/digital works I programmed at Leeds
International Film Festival in 2011 called "Destructural Video", I screened
an excerpt from Neil Gravander's video "Improvisations for Hand-Spun Video
Springer"; the artist modified a VCR so that tapes could be played
backwards and forwards at varying speeds like a tape reel or turntable. For
me, it brought to mind the stuttering film work of Martin Arnold and the
laserdisc experiments of Raphael Montañez Ortiz, but using domestic video
equipment. Video link here: https://vimeo.com/81828111

The screening came about by the way from my research into medium-specific
video art for my undergraduate degree - I was very interested in the glitch
art movement happening then and trying to find similarities with early
artists' video and structuralist/structuralist film aesthetics. It's still
a subject that interests me - if I think of more examples that are
specifically related to the VHS format itself (rather than other consumer
video formats), I'll let you know.

During the mid 90's and up until 2002 or so Vancouver based artist Meesoo
Lee made a lot of work exclusively on VHS with two or more decks strung
together to edit. Using decks that had slo-motion and fast forward features
to create different effects. He then distributed the finished products in
handmade and/or photocopied very distinctive VHS cases.

We're working on a programme of shorts, aiming to celebrate the 40th

Re: [Frameworks] 40 years of VHS - short video recommendations?

2016-09-12 Thread Steve Polta
As a former Blockbuster Video store manager and warehouse employee of "
reel.com" during the epic VHS-to-DVD transition, the VHS format has always
been very dear to my heart and I've often thought of "works," "artists" and
"genres" that epitomized this wretched format. For generic VHS I like to
think about exercise/aerobics tapes, "Barney the Dinosaur" and mainstream
releases that saturated the "market" which were everywhere and haunt us in
thrift store junk shelves. "Home Alone" (which I recall having seen for
sale in gas stations and just about everywhere else) is the top of the heap
of this for me and I'm sure there is a monstrous landfill somewhere
overflowing with these horrid specimens.

In terms of "artist-made" work, *Animal Charm*
 made a huge body of
single-channel tapes and performances derived from goodwill-harvested VHS
tapes (many these are from corporate training-type videos, weird forgotten
product promos etc). *Scott Stark
's **More Than Meets the Eye:
Remaking Jane Fonda * remakes what is possibly
*the* iconic VHS exercise tape. I would also second Stephen Broomer's
recommendation of Christine Lucy Lattimer's 21st Century VHS work. It was
fun screening *The Pool* in CROSSROADS 2012 (I think) as it allowed me to
purge a VHS deck from my "personal collection," after which it was just
placed outside the theater on the curb and vanished in ten minutes. Fun.

Hi Richard,

Christine Lucy Latimer has used VHS to make some very interesting work dealing
with the format's aesthetic character.

The Pool comes to mind -- https://vimeo.com/32115389

I screened this work about three years ago and seem to remember her entrusting
me with an exhibition copy on a shiny red VHS tape.

was vhs used much as a production medium for experimental work ? as I
recall usually it was used mostly for distribution, film people preferred
16 or S8 and video people seemed to prefer other ''industrial'' formats.
