Has Godard's Les Carabiniers been mentioned? One of the main characters
attempts to enter the diegesis of a film being screened in a cinema - via the
literal screen. He fails spectacularly. A meta level example?

Doesn’t qualify as characters breaking into a cinematic fiction exactly,
but in Celine and Julie Go Boating (my favorite movie!) the two main
characters intervene in a sort of living Victorian mystery novel
perpetually underway in a mansion.

On the videodrome tip (of a cinematic fiction invading “reality”), the
argento produced 80s horror movie Demons is about a horror movie sort of
“spilling over” into the world of the characters in the cinema viewing the
film.

Probably not, as the question is stated, but methinks it would be a useful
counterpoint, as it’s basically the reverse: the filmic world enters and then
overtakes the reality of the character in the diegetic ‘real’. Of course there
are any number of narratives where one or more characters from a fiction within
a fiction leavew the filmic world and enter the primary ‘real’, but that’s not
the inverse of the query, really. In Videodrome, it’s more a full world
takeover, for Max anyway.

I can’t think of any other similar examples at the moment. Can anyone else?

Re: [Frameworks] Entertaining the film

2018-07-20 Thread Nicole Baker
Hi Andy,
Thanks for asking for clarification. I am thinking of films along the lines
of Pleasantville, where "real world" people are transported into a
narrative world by magical/fantastic means.
What I was picturing specifically was something where a movie goer at a
cinema walks into the screen, or is otherwise drawn into it and finds
themselves in that films world.
I hope that helps.
Also the subject was meant to read "entering the film".
Thanks so much to everyone for your input!

Do you mean breaking the fourth wall, only in reverse? For example, a
character directly addresses the camera/audience, then moves into the
diegesis? This happens a lot in the TV series House of Cards.

The opening scene of Woody Allen's Annie Hall does this, sort of.

William Holden's opening narration in Sunset Boulevard?

I would think it's more common to find films that move in the opposite
direction, a character breaking the fourth wall after being within the
narrative.

examples! Besides that Take on Me music video (which is close but no

a fun odd one where the subject is trying to depart from the film, within the
film, you can say she's breaking down the 4th wall, the theatre of film, so in
that sense she's doing the opposite of what you're looking for. its ayneh, or

More info: http://laughtears.com/br oside.html

The Brother Side of the Wake (BroSide) is Gerry Fialka's experimental
documentary with Venice, California, as its main character. A remake of the
soon-to-be-released Orson Welles film The Other Side of the Wind, it evokes the
rascality of the Our Gang comedies, and it probes the cliché: "Is the journey
more important than the destination?"
BroSide wakes up the psychic effects of direct cinema, abstract animation, and
films about films. It was shot in various formats including Super 8mm,
Pixelvision, digital video, cell phone and hand-painted celluloid. Now in its
third test screening, BroSide will involve the audience in call-and-responses,
much like a community, out-loud reading of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake.
BroSide can empower the audience to go out, have fun, and do their own thing.
"Film historian Fialka's first feature is a faux faux 'lemon' of a movie. His
lifelong studies has enabled him to find the 'loopholes' leaking out of the
mainstream. BroSide is not released. It has escaped." - Hank Rosenfeld,
author/folk journalist

Re: [Frameworks] Entertaining the film

2018-07-17 Thread Adam Hyman
As Patrick said, SHERLOCK JR.
I can¹t remember exactly, but doesn¹t THE NEVER-ENDING STORY do that?
And I think there are some horror films that use it, but I¹m not really a
horror film person.
One could argue that Twin Peaks: The Return fits, if one interprets the last
segment of the last episode is Cooper and alternate-Laura now somehow being
in the ³real workd."

But is this right? Any character is ³in the film world.² Your¹e asking for
films that have two worlds, and a character somehow moves from one to the
other, and the second is where the primary narrative takes place?
