In Stephen Dwoskin's Pain Is... (1997), there is a sequence where a trapeze
artist describes how her body suffers from robe burns and restricted blood
flow.

There is a version on YouTube http://youtu.be/Hi4PQETsD0k?t=35m1s; the
sequence is at 0:35:01.

If you include video:

Laura Kipnis, Marx: The Video (1990)
presents the personal medical ailment of painful carbuncles erupting on Marx’s
body while he was working on Capital in comparison with the economic and
political analysis of the body politic under capitalism.

Hi Frameworkers,

I'm looking for some help putting together a list of films that address ideas
of the body under duress, or expressing complaint, in connection with labour
conditions and workplace environments.

As a guide, the first on my list is The Nightcleaners by the Berwick Street
Film Collective from 1975. I'm looking for shorts, features, commercial or
educational films as well as experimental or artist cinema. (This is for
personal research for a commission I'm undertaking in the UK, Manual
Labourshttp://www.manuallabours.co.uk/, but there may also be a chance to
screen some of the titles at a public event.)

Would greatly appreciate any signposts!

Best wishes,
Sarah

Re: [Frameworks] The Complaining Body

2015-03-02 Thread Warren Cockerham
Hi Sarah,

There was a post similar to this last year called concepts of work that
you might find in the Frameworks archive. I copied and pasted my response
here:

There's also Teching (Sam) Hseih's* One Year Performance 1980-1981 (Time
Clock Piece) *which I believe exists somewhere in 16mm format. Sam punched
a time clock on the hour every hour for one year in his studio. He shot one
frame of 16mm film for each time clock punch. He shaved his head at the
beginning of this performance - the time lapse/animated hair growth serving
as a record of the performance. I believe he was institutionalized briefly
right after this performance - he didn't sleep for more than an hour at a
time for one year... punching a clock several times a day is maddening
enough. A link explaining the work: http://vimeo.com/16280427

There's also this video I made a few years ago: https://vimeo.com/32584231
my body's still complaining about that labor..
