Re: boot process is too slow during installation
FWIW: I am also using an USB to boot install the FreeBSD on my Toshiba 3480CT lap. It is a Toshiba PA3043U-1FDD; BUT it takes no more than a couple of minutes to load the 4.8 kern and mfsroot floppies. /Dorin. --- Zhang Shu [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi, I am trying to install the current-FreeBSD to my Vaio PCG-Z1/P but found the installation boot process is extremely slow. It takes more than 10 minutes to finish loading the disk created from kern.flp and another 10 minutes for mfsroot.flp. Does anyone know what the problem is? The USB floppy drive I am using is sony's PCGA-UF05. The same thing happens with another USB floppy drive which I don't remember the model. I also tried to boot the installation disks of 4.8R, 4.9R and 5.1R but the result were the same. Thanks. Zhang Shu [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: When I install netbsd with the same floppy drive, it turns to be pretty fast. So I guess this is a FreeBSD problem but do not know where it is... FreeBSD's boot code reads the disk sector by sector rather than track by track. Last time I brought this up I was told that it doesn't matter on modern drives... I wouldn't be surprised if track-by-track turns out to be 18 times faster than sector-by-sector with USB drives. Hi, I am trying to install the current-FreeBSD to my Vaio PCG-Z1/P but found the installation boot process is extremely slow.
