What it says it to copy the CFLAGS and NOPROFILE lines from /etc/defaults/make.conf to /etc/make.conf and uncomment them. Copying CFLAGS and uncommenting is bogus since it just gives -O -pipe if correctly copied, but -O -pipe is the default. If incorrectly copied, then it gives a syntax error. Copying and uncommenting the NOPROFILE gives a small optimization if profiling is not used. yes it does! http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/makeworld.html 21.4.2 Check /etc/make.conf Examine the files /etc/defaults/make.conf and /etc/make.conf. The first contains some default defines - most of which are commented out. To make use of them when you rebuild your system from source, add them to /etc/make.conf. Keep in mind that anything you add to /etc/make.conf is also used every time you run make, so it is a good idea to set them to something sensible for your system. A typical user will probably want to copy the CFLAGS and NOPROFILE lines found in /etc/defaults/make.conf to /etc/make.conf and uncomment them. Examine the other definitions (COPTFLAGS, NOPORTDOCS and so on) and decide if they are relevant to you. I read the handbook and it advises to add the ... CFLAGS -0 -pipe and NOPROFILE= YES to /etc/make.conf. First question, is either of the above necessary if not why is it recommended and what are the benefits of each? Also in conjunction with the latter, if its probably best to have the above in make.conf why is it not in there by default, i installed freebsd-5 current via. a snapshot and the original /etc/make.conf does not have this option. Anyways i added this to the one that was there and was wondering if this caused the error above on buildworld? I am attaching my make.conf, i ommited them out for now and am trying again but thought i would ask. if anything else needs to be in there or deleted please advise. what is profiled libraries, should i build without them, NOPROFILE=YES? I was just wondering what the pros/cons where and if its recommended by the experts. If any of you guys dont mind sharing your make.conf i would appreciate it. What is the exact problem? I think I had an issue with one of the config utilities not running so I clobbered it and ran the one in /usr/src/usr.sbin/ manually and things started to work again. KerberosIV support was recently dropped from HEAD, but Mark forgot to remove some vestiges. I've sent him a patch on March 14, but he seems off-line for a moment. For you, the easiest way to jump is to remove MAKE_KERBEROS4 from /etc/make.conf. I ran into, what I think is the same thing as you're describing, a while ago. The short and skinny being that -O0 doesn't compile any ASM which breaks things and is why you need at least -O to compile the kernel/world. ::shrug:: I could've botched that explanation, but it took me a while to track this down and have it explained. Kind of obscure IMHO. Someone suggested testing to make sure that at least -O is specified where needed, but I'm 99% sure I haven't seen that commit. -sc -- Sean Chittenden To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe freebsd-current" in the body of the message

I'll chime in here with a "me too". My make buildworld(s) failed with the *identical* error as originally posted by daniel <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> on 16-Aug-2000. I tried #make -j4 buildworld and another attempt of #make buildworld. Both attempts failed with the same error. I tried this on a 3.4-RELEASE system with -current cvsup'd on 20-Aug-2000 @ 07:00 (MST). OK, now there are 2 of us with the identical symptom. Where did we go astray? Also, using -current with the latest sources I can compile this cleanly in /usr/src/games/rogue, with optimization set to either "-Os -march=pentiumpro" or "-O2 -march=pentiumpro", so I'm not sure where your problem lies. Try it first without the optimization and see if that helps. BTW, -Os is generally preferred to -02, since the former enables almost everything that -O2 does, but is known to be less buggy.
