For the record: I booted the earlier ab3e6234ab6e, which had no version
mismatch (between kernel and user environment), then built and installed
cd9da8d072e4 without difficulty.

(I guess, I should be unsurprised by failures whilst there was a mismatch.)

Retire WITHOUT_CXX option

Several important base system components are written in C++, and the
WITHOUT_CXX option produced a system that was not fully functional.
Just accept this, and remove the option to build without C++ support.

This reverts commit adc3c128c6603054586a993d117e5dd808deac17.

It appears buildworld doesn't create the obj directory for

src.opts.mk: Require C++20 for C++ support.

libc++ requires C++20, so mark C++ (MK_CXX) as broken if the compiler
does not support C++20.

I had tried it with a clean source directory and empty /usr/obj

# find /usr/src/usr.bin/clang/llvm-objcopy
/usr/src/usr.bin/clang/llvm-objcopy
/usr/src/usr.bin/clang/llvm-objcopy/llvm-objcopy.1
/usr/src/usr.bin/clang/llvm-objcopy/Makefile

and "make buildworld" still ended with the same error.

In /usr/src/Makefile.inc1, the _NO_INCLUDE_COMPILERMK=t option prevents creating
the obj directories for the stuff in usr.bin/clang/.

  1098  _obj:
  1099  @echo
  1100  @echo
"--"
  1101  @echo ">>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree"
  1102  @echo
"--"
  1103  ${_+_}cd ${.CURDIR}; ${WMAKE} _NO_INCLUDE_COMPILERMK=t obj

> --- all_subdir_usr.bin ---
> --- objwarn ---

This happens in stage 4.4, and there's no ${MAKEOBJDIR} directory created
for usr.bin/clang/llvm-objcopy

This is usually an indication that your source directory contains object
files, e.g. is "dirty". Run "make clean" from the top level, or clean up
your source checkout with something like "git clean".

Same here for me for the past couple of weeks. Haven't been able
to identify why it fails. My hunch was that a particular objdir
wasn't being created. As a workaround I edited the Makefile.inc1
to remove the test-includes command (line 1128 I think).

I'd really like to understand why this error comes about. If
someone has any insights, please share them :)

What build options are you using?  this is the test to make sure that
files can be included on their own.

Hi Warner,

My make.conf contains:

# make.conf(5) to use when building world.
MALLOC_PRODUCTION=

My src.conf contains:

## src.conf(5) to use when building world.
WITHOUT_IPFILTER=
WITHOUT_PF=
WITHOUT_PPP=
WITHOUT_LPR=
WITHOUT_NIS=
WITHOUT_LIB32=
WITHOUT_HYPERV=
WITHOUT_APM=
WITHOUT_ATM=
WITHOUT_FINGER=
WITHOUT_FLOPPY=
WITHOUT_RADIUS_SUPPORT=
WITHOUT_DEBUG_FILES=
WITHOUT_TESTS=

The build command is:

env MAKEOBJDIRPREFIX=$HOME/obj \
    make -j2 \
    -DNO_CLEAN \
    __MAKE_CONF=$HOME/make.conf \
    SRCCONF=$HOME/src.conf \
    TARGET=amd64 \
    TARGET_ARCH=amd64 \
    CPUTYPE= \
    buildworld

Perhaps the issue is that I first build the toolchain as a separate step
prior to invoking buildworld, that command is:

    env MAKEOBJDIRPREFIX=$HOME/obj \
    make -j2 \
    __MAKE_CONF=$HOME/make.conf \
    SRCCONF=$HOME/src.conf \
    TARGET=amd64 \
    TARGET_ARCH=amd64 \
    toolchain

Thanks for your interest,
George.

That logic appears to be in bsd.obj.mk as part of the obj target
it depends on SRCS containing paths with /

That target does not get run if one is using auto.obj.mk

We've had support for relative paths in SRCS since 2015
(cee9be4971a56f2a748eb78df97b72e42fe860ab). If this is broken if some
supported modes we should fix it or remove it (but I belive clang/llvm
depends on it).

.OBJDIR should be (and is), not .OBJDIR/sys
making that subdir is up to the makefile and would also fix the problem,
but given the nature of what the makefile is doing just replacing / with
_ is simpler.

Unless you cleaned your tree recently, that could just be an artifact of
an earlier version of the makefile.

Same here for me for the past couple of weeks. Haven't been able to
identify why it fails. My hunch was that a particular objdir wasn't
being created. As a workaround I edited the Makefile.inc1 to remove the
test-includes command (line 1128 I think).

I'd really like to understand why this error comes about. If someone has
any insights, please share them :)

Regards,
George.

I know running make install for /usr/src/tools/build/test-includes can fix this,
but this still fails on a newly installed 14.0-CURRENT.

I've committed a different fix in r359382.

The above change fixed the case at hand, but broke the default.

I've replicated this issue and it goes back the the way
WITH_TESTS_SUPPORT was implemented way back in r273449

This patch fixes WITHOUT_TESTS=t WITH_TESTS_SUPPORT=t for me.

buildworld failed (usr.bin/kyua)

2020-03-27 Thread Ruslan Garipov
I failed to update FreeBSD 13.0-CURRENT amd64 r359231 to r359351.

May be it's related to r359260[1]. Therefore, here is my TEST-settings:

$ fgrep TEST /etc/src.conf
WITHOUT_GOOGLETEST=
WITHOUT_TESTS=
WITH_TESTS_SUPPORT=

Also what has confused me: it's a virtual machine which failed to build.
A physical one built userland and kernel just fine. Both the physical
and virtual machines have almost the same (differ only by CPU
"selection" options) make.conf and src.conf and different kernel
configurations. Both the machines were FreeBSD 13.0-CURRENT amd64
r359231. I've started to build on clean systems (no /usr/obj at all).

Can anyone help me to resolve this issue?

I apologize in advance if I will delay my further replies, due to world
wide health situation.

Thanks!

Try looking at this file in vi. It sounds like a '\0' has somehow been
inserted into this file and corrupted it. How did you get your source tree?

thats EXACTLY whats happening here...

988 if (s[0] == '+' || s[0] == '-') {
989 i = strtol (s,^@&es, 10);
990 if (*es != '\0')  /* trailing
junk */
991 errx (1, "Invalid specifier format: %s\n",
s);
992 return (i);
993 }
994

I used the new svnlite tool to get the src... so I did this:

rm /usr/src/usr.bin/calendar/parsedata.c
svnlite up

and it restored the file but it still has the ^@ so im just going to
manually remove it... im not sure whats going on here...

Bad advice. A typical user should not change CFLAGS or NOPROFILE.

Better advice. Examine these and change them if you can decide that they
are relevant to you or want to learn what they do by making mistakes with
them.

Indded. What it says it to copy the CFLAGS and NOPROFILE lines from
/etc/defaults/make.conf to /etc/make.conf and uncomment them. Copying
CFLAGS and uncommenting is bogus since it just gives -O -pipe if
correctly copied, but -O -pipe is the default. If incorrectly copied,
then it gives a syntax error. Copying and uncommenting the NOPROFILE
gives a small optimization if profiling is not used.

yes it does!

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/makeworld.html

21.4.2 Check /etc/make.conf

Examine the files /etc/defaults/make.conf and /etc/make.conf. The first
contains some default defines - most of which are commented out. To make
use of them when you rebuild your system from source, add them to
/etc/make.conf. Keep in mind that anything you add to /etc/make.conf is
also used every time you run make, so it is a good idea to set them to
something sensible for your system.

A typical user will probably want to copy the CFLAGS and NOPROFILE lines
found in /etc/defaults/make.conf to /etc/make.conf and uncomment them.

Examine the other definitions (COPTFLAGS, NOPORTDOCS and so on) and
decide if they are relevant to you.

Do a buildworld without -j so you get the actual error at the end of

I was wondering if you guys would help me with make.conf and come up with
a good choice. I read the handbook and it advises to add the ... CFLAGS
-0 -pipe and NOPROFILE= YES   to /etc/make.conf.

First question, is either of the above necessary if not why is it
recommended and what are the benefits of each? Also in conjunction with
the latter, if its probably best to have the above in make.conf why is it
not in there by default, i installed freebsd-5 current via. a
snapshot and the original /etc/make.conf does not have this option.
Anyways i added this to the one that was there and was wondering if this
caused the error above on buildworld? I am attaching my make.conf, i
ommited them out for now and am trying again but thought i would ask. if
anything else needs to be in there or deleted please advise.

what is profiled libraries, should i build without them, NOPROFILE=YES? I
was just wondering what the pros/cons where and if its recommended by the
experts. If any of you guys dont mind sharing your make.conf i would
appreciate it. I am trying to come up with a advisable, sound make.conf
file.

I am in the usa, timezone CST

system: amd-athlon-xp 1800

Thanks in advance

here is make.conf just in-case the attachment is filtered as i know some

 What is the exact problem?

I think I had an issue with one of the config utilities not running so I clobbered it
and ran the
one in /usr/src/usr.sbin/ manually and things started to work again.

Did you have a different issue?

Any hint?
Broken sed(1), I think. Has been fixed last week.
Yes, I remember it's fixed but I didn't remember/know that broke sed caused
this..

If you did a -DNOCLEAN build, don't. Otherwise, build and install sed
first.
Build and install sed first did the trick. Thanks!

-j4 obscures the error..try again without it. However, as you'd know
by reading this mailing list, others have reported build failures

No. :-).

If you use CURRENT, stay current. We can't prevent _every_ foot-shoot.

Is it worth putting an #ifdef in /usr/src/Makefile to stop this in its
tracks? Not everyone running -current is on top of this stuff (for better
or worse).

I'm on-line, just busy with other things. Please do NOT make that commit.
Those KerbIV remains are markers for stuff that we need to revisit.

Re: `make buildworld' failed

2003-03-18 Thread Ruslan Ermilov
KerberosIV support was recently dropped from HEAD, but Mark
forgot to remove some vestiges. I've sent him a patch on
March 14, but he seems off-line for a moment.

For you, the easiest way to jump is to remove MAKE_KERBEROS4
from /etc/make.conf.

The patch is available here:

THe compiler is broken.

If you are that intent on compiling a non-optimized FreeBSD
so you can benchmark it against an optimized Linux, well, you
could always compile everything but the files with asm()
statements at -O0, and then manuall compile those with -O...

8-) 8-) 8-).

Sean,

Thanks for your answer. I'm just curious why a lower
optimization level could cause trouble than -O.
Anyway, my -current works fine with the default
CFLAGS. It seems that there're some commits to
rtld-elf on today.

It looks as if your box was last updated on Apr. 13. - there was
a window of a few hours where make(1) was broken. If this is
the case, the following should solve your problem.

cd /usr/src/usr.bin/make
make clean && make depend && make && make install
make clean && make cleandepend
cd /usr/src
make buildworld

I ran into, what I think is the same thing as you're describing, a
while ago. The short and skinny being that -O0 doesn't compile any
ASM which breaks things and is why you need at least -O to compile the
kernel/world. ::shrug:: I could've botched that explanation, but it
took me a while to track this down and have it explained. Kind of
obscure IMHO. Someone suggested testing to make sure that at least -O
is specified where needed, but I'm 99% sure I haven't seen that
commit.  -sc

buildworld failed with -O0

Hi All,

I don't know if I'm the one that observed this.
Building world completed with default CFLAGS (-O -pipe
-march=pentiumpro), but failed with -O0 or without
optimization. /usr/src cvsupped within one day. Here's
the error message (same for -O0 and without -O).

===> libexec/rtld-elf

-I/usr/src/libexec/rtld-elf -elf -fpic -DPIC
-Wformat=2 -Wno-format-extra-args  -c
/usr/src/libexec/rtld-elf/rtld.c
/usr/src/libexec/rtld-elf/rtld.c: In function
`atomic_decr_int':
/usr/src/libexec/rtld-elf/i386/rtld_machdep.h:58:

Is it a gcc31 problem?

the fix is (yet again) to rebuild sed.

I'll chime in here with a "me too". My make buildworld(s) failed with
the *identical* error as originally posted by daniel
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> on 16-Aug-2000.

I tried #make -j4 buildworld and another attempt of #make buildworld.
Both attempts failed with the same error.

I tried this on a 3.4-RELEASE system with -current cvsup'd on
20-Aug-2000 @ 07:00 (MST).

OK, now there are 2 of us with the identical symptom. Where did we go
astray?

As you've already noticed, you will get better responses in general to
help requests if you change your CFLAGS options in /etc/make.conf to "-O
-pipe" (or just comment out CFLAGS, which has the same effect) and then
try again. However...

I don't see any of these files in my sources, are you sure this is
FreeBSD's version of rogue? Also, using -current with the latest sources
I can compile this cleanly in /usr/src/games/rogue, with optimization
set to either "-Os -march=pentiumpro" or "-O2 -march=pentiumpro", so I'm
not sure where your problem lies. Try it first without the optimization
and see if that helps. BTW, -Os is generally preferred to -02, since the
former enables almost everything that -O2 does, but is known to be less
buggy.

Good luck,

You are adding to the long list of people that are about to make totally
remove -02+ from GCC. FreeBSD only supports the use of -O in /usr/src/

Another one would be `make clean' in /usr/src. It worked for me
(despite of failure during `make installworld' where it didn't locate

Hmmm. Or make -k -j8 buildworld || make -DNOCLEAN buildworld
in order to build as much multithreaded as possible and then the
reminding part non-threaded? :-)
