For me it worked fine, but one time my screen goes black suddenly and
system crashed, don't know if it's another awful panic or something else
but nothing in /var/crash neither in /var/log/Xorg.*.log but the dmesg
after reboot says that / was not properly dismounted ...

That also fixes the issue on my RV370 (X600). I have several other
systems with newer Radeon cards but haven't had the opportunity to
try the new X.org on them. Unfortunately, there's no reason given
for this patch so it's not clear whether it _is_ required for some
cards. In any event, the problem it causes with at least older
cards suggests that the patch is not complete.

Just to put this thread into context, the new driver improves the
situation for some people, of course you don't see them complaining
here.

My machine has 2 ATI cards, one onboard (HD4200) and one in the PCIE
slot (HD5770). The new driver allows me to switch back to the console
when using the HD5770.

In conjunction with the Xorg upgrade a reproducible panic with certain
combinations of BIOS and xorg.conf configurations disappeared.
These combinations still don't work, but instead of panicking the
system, the Xorg process can be killed and the xorg.conf can be
changed to a working configuration without a reboot or risk of
data loss.

Breaks my ATI Technologies Inc RV380 [Radeon X600 (PCIE)] as well.

I have discovered that disabling DRI or acceleration makes it work
(though that's not really a solution). But I guess it wouldn't be
an upgrade from the X.org Consortium without some arbitrary and
unnecessary regression.

With Option Log sync, the tail end of the X.org log looks like:
(II) RADEON(0): [dri] Visual configs initialized
(II) RADEON(0): RADEONRestoreMemMapRegisters() :
(II) RADEON(0): MC_FB_LOCATION : 0xe7ffe000 0x1fff
(II) RADEON(0): MC_AGP_LOCATION : 0xffc0
(==) RADEON(0): Backing store disabled
(II) RADEON(0): [DRI] installation complete

As a workaround, install the version 6.13 driver. A separate port
has been created for it.

# portupgrade -o x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati613 xf86-video-ati

This works for me as long as DynamicPM is left disabled. Enabling
it also causes a hard lockup.

Look into /var/logs/Xorg.0.log

FYI, I had the same problem. Try to update your ports tree and rebuild
the driver to see if it fix the problem. (some files were commited
after the big xorg commit because they were forgotten). If you built
your video driver without the patches, it may be the origin of your
problem.

Most of these are defaults. A Radeon 9600XT probably isn't PCIE, so
definitely leave that out, or if necessary, set to the appropriate bus.
