I now understand it is either an Apache problem, perhaps
related to the fact I'm using an IP number as ServerName,
not a URL, and perhaps related to the fact that I'm behind
a NAT firewall (linksys router) that passes port 80 to my
FreeBSD machine on 192.168.1.9.

What's happening is that the client on the internet is being
redirected to the 192.168.1.9 address, not to the IP number
in the ServerName line in httpd.conf. That works fine on my
LAN, but not out on the internet.

Google returns hundreds of answers for apache trailing slash,
and I'm following up.

Any ideas would be appreciated, but as this is clearly not
a FreeBSD problem, I'll drop the issue here until I find a
solution.

portupgrade -P and local changes

2004-12-26 Thread Harlan Stenn
I have a couple of ports where I am using a Makefile.local to provide some
customizations for the local environment (I think they are for postfix+SASL,
and apache2+the experimental modules, but I could be mistaken) where
stock prebuilt packages are available.

When I update the installed packages on the box, I like to use:

 portupgrade -Ppa

The problem I have is that when these two ports get upgraded, portupgrade
fetches and installs the prebuilt packages, which means I have to remember
to then reinstall these two packages from the ports tree.

Is there a way to tell portupgrade that it should not *fetch* prebuilt ports
for these two packages? If the packages are already there I'm fine having
them installed (as it means they were built using the Makefile.local values
and wrapped as a package from the -p flag).

Including c files in the FreeBSD kernel

2004-12-26 Thread Chris Martin
I have some incomplete doco on installing a driver, and I was wondering if
someone could help me bridge the gap.

The drive makefile copies a vpd.c and a lib file into the /sys/ structure.
The doco then says to create a custom kernel config (e.g. MYKERNEL), put in
a device line for the driver (device vpd in this case) and create a
files.MYKERNEL file with the line:
'pci/vpb.c optional vpb'

When I go to do a config before building, it says: 'Warning: device vpb is
unknown'

Is there a step missing to get the config to include the files.MYKERNEL
file?

If you wish to see the source for the drive in it's entirety, it can be
obtained here:
http://www.voicetronix.com.au/downloads.htm#freebsd

Hope someone can help me?

The PayPal process I used was simpler, but a PayPal account isn't

Unfortunately, when I tried it, I got walked through a bunch of screens

-P is telling portupgrade to check for. download and install a

I've been having this problem with Paypal for several months. I once

and I refused to agree to, so I requested that they terminate my account.
Of course, they claimed they did.

However, any time I try to use my CC to make a paypal accountless
payment, I hit up against this problem. Apparently, the people at
paypal are incapable of following their own rules (which state that I
can't have an account if I don't agree to their TOS)

Anyway, it's between PayPal and I, but I don't suppose it will ever
get resolved, unless I sue or something, and I can't imagine there's
  any justification for suing.

Now, I also understand. Maybe you could try a different credit card?

Yes, I think I have one other I can use.

The point is that I shouldn't have to, and this thread is getting off-
topic, as my problems with PayPal aren't really the concern of
FreeBSD or even the Foundation (except that it's delaying my donation).

xorg/dri-6.2_1,2 upgrade problems

2004-12-26 Thread Ned Harrison
I'm currently running Release 5.2.1. which has just reciently been
updated to the security branch.

I was upgrading xorg to version 6.8.1. with portupgrade when it crashed
with an Error Code 1. I traced the crash to failure to upgrade
dri-5.0.2,2 to dri-6.2_1,2. I've attempted to build dri-6.2_1,2 but it
keeps crashing with an Error code 2. I didn't see any notes in the
ports UPDATING file regarding this issue nor did I find any similar
issues in the archives.

I ran cvsup to update the ports this morning and done the prtsdb -Uu to
creat an index. The make in dri still has the same problem.

I piped my last attempt to make dri to a file. The last lines of the
output are below. Sorry about the lack of additional information. My
xserver crashed so i am stuck in the command line mode. I'm running my
computer off Knoppix disk so I can send this information to
freebsd-questions. So any suggestions on what I should do or attempt
to do to get my system back up and running would be appreciated.

No, I was only talking about getting it to work on windows, god forbid

I can tell you that I will never buy any wireless gear from them again.
As far as Wireless USB networking, I won't be trying that again for a
long long time. I'll stick with the tried and true WAP11, WET11*, and
PCMCIA/PCI Wireless networking gear thank you very much.
*Linksys WET11 (Wireless to Ethernet bridge), I would recommend this in
a heart beat, I had one of those in a 3 dollar plastic container all the
way up in a tree (wasn't my idea) for a year before It gave out. I live
in northern Illinois and it gets very cold in the winter and very hot
(humid) in the summer here, when I took it down from the tree the blue
Linksys color was completely faded to gray. I had no major problems with
it, and even after it gave out I managed to savage the PCMCIA Prism 3
card plus antenna assembly (did I tell yea the range on it, 200m
NearLOS) from it and am using it to this day as my AP at home. I give
this product 6 out of 5 stars.

I've noticed that IE tends to have problems with certian URLs.
The trailing slash issue sounds familiar as an IE problem (although

Have you tried other browsers from the location that doesn't work?

Interesting! I only use Mozilla, V1.7.2. On your suggestion, I

Hi, my name is Andrei and I have recently purchased FreeBSD from BSDMall and
I ran into few problems. I am a windows user but i have some experince in
Linux BUT, I got rid of my windows machine and installed FreeBDS. After the
install for some reason i log into root and i use the startx command since i
get no GUI interface and i get 3 pannels (light green bar and white
background and a clock at the top (it looks like a 16 bit OS or something).
Can you tell me what could be wrong ... any help will be apreciated. (i am
gladly getting rid of windows and i am probably not give up easily that is
why i would like some help) ... Thank you for the time taken to read my
email and helping me. My system is 3.06Ghz intel, all in wonder ati 9700

Oooooops: make deinstall

2004-12-26 Thread Tom Vilot
I inadvertently invoked make deinstall from /usr/ports, thinking I was
in the directory of the port I wanted to 'make deinstall make reinstall'

I wasn't.
Oops.
I'm in the process of re-installing those ports I installed and depend
on (firefox, thunderbird, etc).

But ... since I control-c'ed the ill-chosen 'make deinstall', I'm sure I
have left my package database in a rather un-tidy state.

Is there an easy way to say, either with portupgrade or make or any
other tool, the equivalent of:

what ports are installed? Are they *really* installed?
What do they depend on? Are those installed? Are they *really* installed?
Of course I can do portupgrade -l -O, but I think my question is:
does that tell me if my system is actually clean?

:c)
Also --- is there some way of looking at an audit trail or some way
that I can see what ports/packages I had previously installed before I
accidentally did make deinstall?

Thanks ...

start with the FreeBSD Handbook on the website.

Nothing is wrong. You simply haven't configured your GUI yet. I suggest
you read the following section of the handbook to get up to speed on
your choices and how to set them up. If you hit any problems, don't

Andrei, it sounds to me like you have fvwm installed as your window
manager / desktop.

Install KDE or GNOME or WindowMaker or something useful, and you will
have a bit more luck.

As root (before you bother with startx), try this:
pkg_add -r windowmaker
Then, edit your .xinitrc file (in your /root directory) to contain the
following line:

wmaker
Then, try startx.
I suggest WindowMaker because it is fairly lightweight, will not take a
long time to install, and will give you the base functionality of a GUI
without requiring you to do a lot of work.

Also, it is my window manager of choice :c)

There is nothing wrong, I think. It sounds as if you have properly installed
X. But X isn't the friendliest desktop around, as you've seen.

You should be able to get a full-featured desktop by issuing the following
commands:

cd /usr/ports/x11/kde3
make all install clean
login andrei (or some NON-ROOT user)
startx

KDE is only one of several window managers that are available, but it is
probably the most widely used.

It is recommended that you use a NON-ROOT user unless you specifically need
root access.

There is a way to configure your system to log in directly to the GUI, but I
use the following in ~/.cshrc:

if ($?DISPLAY) then
set history = 100
set savehist = 100
else
startx
endif

This will cause FreeBSD to issue the startx command on a per-user basis.

If you get that X desktop and don't know how to get out of it, press
CTRLALTBACKSPACE. This will shut down X and put you back at the
command line.

Thanks for purchasing FreeBSD!

Yea you need to install a desktop environment (Gnome, KDE, Xfce, etc)
and then setup X, It looks like you already have X setup as you can get
to the default twm window manager. What you need to do now install a
desktop Environment and then tell X to use it instead of twm. Everything
you need to know is documented in chapter 5 subsection 7 of the FreeBSD

No, although running a pkgdb -fu and then a portupgrade -a would probably
solve most of your issues. A portupgrade -af would certainly do so,
although it would probably take a day or two to finish...

If you created a /usr/ports/packages directory, portupgrade and such will
leave the precompiled binary packages you've created on your system there.

Otherwise, consult your backups.

bg flag for local file-systems

2004-12-26 Thread Andrew P.
Hello,
I'm sorry if this sounds dumb, but I'm looking for a kind of bg flag
(from mount_nfs) for my local file-systems. The problem is that I
frequently pull hard drives out of my headless file-server, but forget
to edit fstab _before_ it. So the system won't boot until I connect a
monitor, a keyboard and sort the mess out from the single-user mode.

I currently use noauto flag in fstab for the file-systems, but that
makes me mount them manually every time I reboot. Is there any magic I
can do with fstab to solve my problem, or will I have to write a script?

Best wishes,
Andrew P.

ee /etc/cvsupfile (to start the ee editor). Add the following lines:

directories listed in PKG_PATH for a newer package tarball.
 If found, jump to 5.
2. Fetch the latest package from a remote site using
pkg_fetch(1). If the fetched package is the latest, jump to
 5. If -P is given twice (i.e. -PP) and the fetched package
is not the latest but at least newer than the current instal-
 lation, jump to 5.
3. If -P is given twice (i.e. -PP), stop the task.
4. Build the corresponding port of the given installed package.
5. Fix the dependency information of the packages that depend on
 the given package.
6. Back up the current installation of the given package using
pkg_create(1). Note that the backup tarball will be very
large if the package is a big monster like XFree86. Please
ensure you have sufficient disk space (refer to the ENVIRON-
MENT section to know where) to save the backup tarball. (Per-
haps a new option to omit backups will be added in the future)
7. Back up the current package registration files of the given
 package.
8. Uninstall the given package forcibly, preserving shared
 libraries unless -u is specified.
9. Install the new version via ports or packages, depending on
 the conditions in 1, 2 and 3.
10. If the installation fails,
10.1. Restore the old installation backed up in 6.
10.2. Restore the old package registration files
backed up in 7.
10.3. Revert the dependency information fixed in 5.
11. Remove the dependencies obsoleted in this upgrade.
12. Run ``portsclean -L'' to delete duplicate libraries and put
 away old libraries.
13. Run ``pkgdb -aF'' to fix up stale dependencies and reconstruct
 +REQUIRED_BY files.

the opportunity to provide some small measure of support.

$30,400 was needed, and 839 people contributed 123% of that

Congratulations to us all for surpassing the goal. Wow.

I think a fair number of people would like to see it.

It would make it Lots Easier for people to upgrade their systems.

There are packages where it makes lots of sense to use the prebuilt ones.

Now that I think the only feature I want is for it to don't fetch if
there is a Makefile.local I'll see if I can code it up and submit it.

Or is there a better way to handle building a port with local modifications
besides using a Makefile.local file?

Using healthd at securelevel 3

2004-12-26 Thread Anthony Atkielski
I started setting securelevel=3 at boot, and I notice that healthd
refuses to run, giving the message InitMBInfo: Operation not permitted
even from root. I assume this is because of the higher securelevel.

Is there a way to make healthd work with this higher level (assuming
that's the problem)? If not, are there alternatives? I just need to
check the temps on the machine from time to time, with a CLI. If it's
not due to securelevel=3, what else could it be?

On 4.x MAKEDEV is a shell script, so you should type

think you have to be in the /dev directory for this to work, since
that's where the MAKEDEV script is located. You also need to be root, or
equivalent (su or sudo).

MAKEDEV doesn't exist on 5.x, so if you're running 5.x that might also
explain it not working.

Those who are qualified to offer further suggestions (i.e. who know more
than I do) would certainly ask two questions: a) what version of FreeBSD
are you running (uname -a will tell you), and b) in what way does it
not work? That is, exactly what do you type, and what is the system's
response?

Man! What progress since then!

I wonder why it is that all of the FreeBSD core team are not also on the board
of directors? Or did I misunderstand that? Do you mean that not all of the
core team are on the board?? Or not all of the board members are part of the
core team? I guess that'd have to be a pretty big meeting room, for sure, if
everyone who contributed was on the board!!! NO WONDER they can't get a press

Wine 20041201 on FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE

2004-12-26 Thread Matthew Bluestone
I am running FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE, Xorg 6.8.1 (portupgraded today), and
KDE 3.3.3 (portupgraded today). My ports tree was updated yesterday.

I am trying to run Wine, and I have the 20041201 port. The release
notes say that it now runs under FreeBSD 5.3. While Wine's doc
suggests that a kernel patch may be necessary, the discussion on this
at http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=73092 suggests that that
is not the case and that Wine itself has been patched.

Incidentally, I am only bothering with all this in order to run the
Party Poker client, which is listed on winehq as running
(http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?appId=1567;whq_appdb=acc45b9fbc40a720bb99098126f77753)

I successfully did
# make
and
# make install
on the wine port, and I have set up a link to a directory that
functions as c:, the subdirectories within it, and the
~/.wine/config file as suggested in the documentation. wineserver
runs, but my Windows application crashes, as follows:

Try this in /boot/loader.conf:
hint.acpi.disabled=thermal
I might be wrong, but I think on the 1750 you should use APM instead of
ACPI. I had a 1750 running with FreeBSD 4.x and APM and it worked very
well.
How?, I added it to my kernel device apm, device pmtimer, and
device amp_saver and rebuilt it and in rc.conf I added
apm_enable=YES, apmd_enable=YES and I greped though
default/loader.conf for anything but found nothing, after rebooting the
only thing I get from dmesg is WARNING: apm_saver module requires apm
enabled and when I type in apm I get apm: can't open /dev/apm: No such
file or directory, type in zzz and I get apm: can't open /dev/apm: No
such file or directory
You need to also disable ACPI. After doing that, does it work?
I want ACPI!, APM is a last ditch hack to me, the name says it all
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface there is a reason they
switched to it. The 440BX chipset has full support for ACPI and
therefore should work with FreeBSD and is a critical problem, what do
you think might happen if you disable all your fans on your computer???.
Please note that I'm not trying to diss FreeBSD in anyway for it being
broken as I understand the issues with the DSDT, AML, and ASL stuff, I
just want it to work.
APM is not a last ditch hack. Many PCs, especially from the same era
as yours (98-01) have perfect APM support and lousy ACPI support due to
the tools and testing just getting up to speed back then. Until
recently, Linux declined to support ACPI on systems older than 2001.

The chipset may support ACPI but the AML supplied by the OEM is what is
the issue here. Post a URL where I can download the AML:

AML is OS-independent. It's supplied by the BIOS. Unfortunately, the

Yes, see previously-mentioned hint in loader.conf. It may not help
though since once ACPI is active, the BIOS often expects the OS to
manage everything so this may just disable your fans. Be careful.

AML is OS-independent. It's supplied by the BIOS. Unfortunately, the
'fixed' AML you've found is in binary form.

Is there a way I can just disable the ACPI thermal management, then I
could use ACPI until someone with more clout and programming know how
decides to fix it?

Yes, see previously-mentioned hint in loader.conf. It may not help
though since once ACPI is active, the BIOS often expects the OS to
manage everything so this may just disable your fans. Be careful.

Can you get the author of this patch to send you the raw dsdt.asl,

Make sure you read /usr/src/UPDATING (all the way through) before you

good luck!

5.3: want to install XFree86

2004-12-26 Thread Theodore D. Sternberg
I've had it with Xorg and would like to go back to XFree86.
Unfortunately, when I go to /usr/ports/x11/XFree86-4 and type make, it
doesn't do anything; it just gives me this message...

   ===  XFree86-4.4.0_1,1 is part of XFree86-4.
and exits.
XFree86 was giving me everything I needed, back under FreeBSD 5.1. Xorg,
in contrast, is one huge hassle. Xorg -config produces an xorg.conf.new
file that doesn't work (I have ATI Rage 128). Then, reading some of the
traffic on this mailing list I see talk about preloading AGP and ATI from
/boot/loaders.conf, and I know I'd be getting in way too deep if I did
that.

To further confirm my ignorance, I'll ask this: what exactly is Xorg? Is
it just a different X server (and associated configuration tools)? Or is
it something more broad-based than that?

If I succeed in building an XFree86 server, can I just make the
appropriate symlink -- /usr/X11R6/bin/X --, install my old XFree86.conf
file in /etc/X11, and run with that? Or is it going to be more
complicated?

upgrade dri-5.0.2,2 to dri-6.2_1,2. I've attempted to build
dri-6.2_1,2 but it keeps crashing with an Error code 2. I didn't see
any notes in the ports UPDATING file regarding this issue nor did I
find any similar issues in the archives.

I ran cvsup to update the ports this morning and done the prtsdb -Uu
to creat an index. The make in dri still has the same problem.
I piped my last attempt to make dri to a file. The last lines of the
output are below. Sorry about the lack of additional information.
My xserver crashed so i am stuck in the command line mode. I'm
running my computer off Knoppix disk so I can send this information

attempt to do to get my system back up and running would be
appreciated.
Output of the Make command in the dri port:

Part of the dri stuff(the drivers) are in the base system and not
upgraded with the dri port(I think). That could be causing you pain,
but the more likely cause may be that pthread and other libs. In 5.3
some of the libs were bumped and there have been threading changes.
Maybe you should update your system too?

BTW, do you have a p pro, or is that some default in some makefile?

As I understand it, Xorg is the follow on to XFree86. You can read about
it at X.org. The new versions will be Xorg. FWIW, I still use
XF86Config. I may have had to tweak the video card but that was it. I
use xdb to switch between en/es and that works on 5.3 but xorg on 4.x
doesn't switch.

You have to change /etc/make.conf to include
X_WINDOW_SYSTEM=xfree86-4

You have to remember that any packages you downloade for 5.x will want
xorg instead of XFree86.

compile/override it. See the handbook or man acpi for steps, but the
short of it is:

iasl Compaq-Armada_1700_1750_3500-686EM_99.1130_A-custom.asl
cp DSDT.aml /boot
And add to /boot/loader.conf:
acpi_dsdt_load=YES
acpi_dsdt_name=/boot/DSDT.aml
This will load your custom AML at boot time.
