Re: [kde-freebsd] After upgrading to kde-4.4.3 screen goes black after the kde4 splash screen
Hi Yuri, This won't be of much help, I know, but KDE 4.4.3 is working perfectly for me. It scrambled my desktop panel settings a bit, but that was easily remedied. Cheers, DMK On May 24, 2010 04:54:00 am Yuri wrote: I found that renaming ~/.kde4 makes things better and kde4 boots like for the first time. But how do I get my previous settings back? After I added yaWP weather plasmoid desktop turned black. Do you have kde-4.4.3 working? PCI-X on FreeBSD vs. PCI-X on Linux
Hello, My company is currently comparing FreeBSD to Linux: specifically FreeBSD 4.11-RELEASE to Fedora Core 3. We're having a difficult time determining whether or not FreeBSD is utilizing the higher speeds of the PCI-X bus. Can anyone specifically state the status of PCI-X support in FreeBSD? The state of support in 5.X is fine too. This is a major issue as we determine which platform to move forward on. Note that I do mean PCI-X. I'm aware that PCI-Express is on Scott Long's wish-list of things to get implemented. Re: Problems with flash and native mozilla
Martes Wigglesworth wrote: Greetings. I have an issue with my mozilla install. I am unable to figure out how, or what people get flash7 to work with mozilla. And I also have trouble getting anything to work that I need, while maintaining a working desktop. Hence, if I want to install mplayer, I have to upgrade everthing that also makes my desktop, KDE 3.1.4, work with the initial install. Also, the only reliable desktop/production applications seem to be the few that come on the iso install cd. Anyone have any advice on this? Respectfully, Martes Martes, Your question is better suited to the freebsd-questions mailing list, rather than the freebsd-hackers mailing list, so I've cc'ed the response to your letter to the former list rather then the latter. The port that enables mozilla on FreeBSD to use flash is www/linuxpluginwrapper. Since you're using KDE 3.1.4 I'm going to assume that you're running FreeBSD 4.9-RELEASE. That's fine; the functionality that linuxpluginwrapper needs is present in 4.9. However, support for Flash 7 has only just been added to linuxpluginwrapper, and is listed as alpha quality only. In other words, it's more likely to not work than work. As far as upgrading goes: have you upgraded your ports collection using cvsup? This is the best safest way to keep things up to date on your system. The Handbook has information on using cvsup in Appendice A.5 (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/cvsup.html). A sample supfile for ports is /usr/share/examples/cvsup/ports-supfile. For managing your ports, I strongly recommend the sysutils/portupgrade port. Simply log in as root, cd to /usr/ports/sysutils/portupgrade and do make make install clean Then do a man portupgrade. It's a great tool. If you haven't been upgrading your utilities, you should be aware that mozilla has come out with several new releases of its browser since 4.9-RELEASE, including some security releases to block exploits in the browser. You should strongly consider updating your desktop. The advantages of KDE 3.3 over 3.1.4 are too numerous for me to go into here. If you don't want to use the ports system to compile a new KDE, KDE packages are available for installation using pkg_add (or portinstall -PP if you've installed portupgrade.) Directions for installing and upgrading KDE can be found at http://www.freebsd.kde.org. Good luck! Hyperthreading question
Hi all, I'm upgrading some machines from 4.8-RELEASE to 4.10-RELEASE. The machines in question are dual-processor xeon boxes. Now, my boss is adamant in that he doesn't want hyperthreading enabled on the machines. In 4.8-RELEASE things were simple... I just didn't add the options HTT line to my kernel config file. In 4.10-RELEASE though, HTT is enabled by default. So, is there any way to shut off the hyperthreading? I've tried disabling it in the BIOS, and had no luck whatsoever. Thanks, DMK PS: A direct reply would be welcome. PCI-X support in FreeBSD
Hello, I was wondering if there were any plans to support the PCI-X bus in FreeBSD. The hardware release notes for both 4.9 and 5.2.1 only mention PCI. I know that all PCI-X slots support standard PCI cards, but I'm interested in the performance boost that PCI-X gives. Odd cvsup behaviour
Hi all, Lately, when I cvsup my ports tree, using ports-all, I've noticed something rather odd. The editors/AbiWord2 port always gets completely deleted. Always. If I cvsup again immediately after completion, the editors/AbiWord2 port always gets completely checked out again. Any idea why this would be happening? I noticed the behaviour because when I would portsdb -Uu after the cvsup, the index would always break. So these days I cvsup -L2 ports-supfile (which uses ports-all) immediately followed by cvsup -L2 editors-supfile (which I've edited to only use ports-editors, for speed's sake.) After that, portsdb -Uu works like a charm. I've attached the output from cvsup in case anyone's interested. I'm using cvsup12, since I'm sure that'd be one of the first questions. :) Regrettably, I managed to lose the output from the second cvsup but trust me, it's always just the AbiWord2 port getting checked out again. Disabling uhci at boot-time
Hello, I've been tasked with putting FreeBSD on a laptop at work. The problem I'm having is this: The USB controller is setting up as IRQ 10, while another piece of hardware is hard-coded to that IRQ. Hence, the kernel panics on a page-fault at boot time, meaning I can't even start the install. The laptop is a Eurocom 3100b and its BIOS doesn't have a setting to shut off the USB stuff. (I upgraded the BIOS just to see if that would help. It didn't.) I tried to disable USB in the kernel config utility, only to discover that to the kernel config utility uhci doesn't exist. So what I'm asking is this: is there any way around this problem, or do I inform my boss that he's asking the impossible? Please cc me on any replies.
