Dear list, I have been doing some remote work using ssh and BPF. From time to time I feel like restarting /etc/rc.d/netif using a static configuration and noticed that my default route gets delete even when I have everything se as static under /etc/rc.conf. The only way I can get my default route back is by restarting /etc/rc.d/routing which is uncomfortable besides doing the manual route add default xx.xx.xx.xx. Why is this behavior happening when rc.conf has the propoer setting for defaultrouter? Thank you ina dvance. Dear all, I have been busy this summer. Just got a new board (Mini-ITX) for a firewall project, I got the add-on module call AD3RTLANG. The board is working ok, yet I am experiencing difficulties getting the 3 NIC module working, any ideas if there is any support on this particular module. Hi all, after all my frustration finding the answer to this problem, i think I am getting closer to my answer. According to Cisco, it appears a problem with frimware at our rauting level http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/secursw/ps1018/products_tech_note09186a0080743212.shtml , our routers will be upgrade soon to resolve this issue. There is a work around I found in another University that seem to be experiencing the same problem http://8help.osu.edu/3253.html , I am sorry for taking so long to investigated this issue. Evolution-data-server compiling errors.

This is insane, the FreebSD team needs to find a more liable solution to this problem, hence some of our prospects users that will be browsing the site with vista machi9nes will just go away without knowing what is going on. Hi Gerard, Thank you for your reply. I really do not understand were the problem is, I am tending to think it is a problem at the routing level now. I ask two of my co-workers to go home and test the website in their machines using vista, they did, and were able to access it in IE 7.x and Firefox; however, I still puzzle, why are the machines using windows XP downward able to load the site in IE or Firefox. I know that you or someone else mention something regarding IPV6 TCP window encapsulation at the routing level, yet I am testing vista at work (over 3000 nodes), this is one of the test I am performing before deploying it. It seems weir that www.freebsd.org is the only website experiencing the problem so far. BTW, the FreeBSD servers in out LAN also cannot access www.freebsd.org;as a temporary solution, I have been able to access the handbook via www.uk.freebsd.org . This is a really weird issue that is bothering me and I won't stop until it is solve, sooner or later our client side will be migrated to Windows Vista hence our users are not computer literate to migrate to Unix or Linux at this point in time. I still looking for clues if anyone has found a solution to this, meanwhile I appreciate your effort Gerard and that of many others that have contribute to resolve this matter. Dear all users, After troubleshooting from all angles this problem i have run out of imagination/sense. I loaded a machine with Windows Vista a work and try accessing the www.freebsd.org website. The web site didn't load, yet I try again in 10 other machines to see if it was a machine issue. Lastly I try loading the size in a Windows XP machine and it works ok. What seems to be the problem in this case? I have run out of ideas and even ask a few colleges at work and they don't seem to have a clue either. Please advise. Samba and Swat are not restarting the daemons.
Dear all, I have install samba version:3.0.26a from ports, the daemons appear to be working fine by enabling the apropiate parameters in rc.conf, yet I am speriencing the issue where SWAT is showing as the smbd and nmbd are not running nor will they restart. Can someone point me in the right direction of what is going on. Why is swat no allowing the process to be manipulated accordingly? Thanks in advance. Hi Lisandro,
have you got Thunar installed? those icons launch your file manager, which by
default is the Thunar file manager. I am not sure if there is a way to
replace it for other.
You may want to check ~/.xsession-errors to see if there are any errors being

Well, I have tried both plugins 7 and 9, they both seem to be giving me difficulties, I try installing from ports/packages, but still the same issues. Installation for version 7 seems a pain hence I have to crease symbolic links to browser_plugins in order for firefox to pick them up. I am not sure if the development team is working in a functional port for this for the upcoming release 7.0, I switch my desktop completely to FreeBSD 6.2-Release with updated xorg 7.2, still doing some of the administrative work in the Win boxes using rdesktop, but this OS seems pretty stable and when I am ready I am thinking of migrating all my Win Servers to FBSD, BSD rocks. The next thing that needs some work is Quicktime and Flash, what would be a desktop without those plugins? Any ideas are welcome on making these two things to work. BTW, you guys are doing a wonderful job in the mailing list. How to use dump?
Hi Daemons, I have been trying to learn this amazing OS in the last few months, it has a lot of tools which can be useful within my toolbox. I am having some issues using this tool call Dump, currently located under /sbin/dump, you all know that. ;-). Well, my goal is to do a dump of file system /home which holds all the directories of my users into an external USB drive /dev/da0s1d with mount point is /backup. I have been searching for some documentation to expand my knowledge on this tool, yet have not been sucesful finding any details of it , I even try the man pages and the handbook and still puzle by how to use this utility. That sounds like a good command to use, but don't I have to use the -L switch hence the filesystem is live? What about the restore method the same notation would apply, right? Have you use this methodology yourself or would you recomend using another method? Configuring OpenLDAP and FreeBSD 6.2R
Hi all, I have been trying to get openLDAP up and running before I decide to integrated into a number of aplications. The port currently install are: openldap-sasl-client-2.4.3.aopenldap-server-2.4.3.a db4-4.0.14_1,1 After restarting the service and looking at the logs, I am getting some warnings, can someone elaborate what they mean with the following. Need to edit rc.conf, but FS won't allow.
Hi all, I was playing around with rc.conf under /etc and accidentally didn't quote properly one of my YES entries, now the system won't boot. I tried booting into single user and re-editing the file, yet the time I tried saving it it tells me that the root files systm is read only. Is ther a way around this. Thanks in advance. _ Learn. Configuring OpenLDAP on FreeBSD 6.2 Release, Problems.
Hi All, I am a newcomer to the FreeBSD world. I am trying to implement a openLDAP installation. It all went ok with the SASL and SERVER install in conjunction with BDB, yet when I try starting the service using /usr/local/libexec/slapd or /usr/local/etc/rc.d/slapd start, the service does not start. I checked ps -axww | grep slapd and nothing is showing. After checking cat /var/log/debug.log I can see the following output in stdout. What I had done: Initially I set up the newly installed drive (da2) to have only one partition (da2s1d) which I chose to be /user (note the e). I tarred /usr to a file in /user tar -cf /user/usr.tar /tar and extracted the file tar -xf usr.tar I had the whole structure of /usr underneath /user/usr And then cd usr mv * .. to have everything under /user Then I edited fstab. Whatever was /user became /usr and /usr became /user. I will definitely try dump. Never used it before. Throw me a bone if you have one. /usr/local/etc/rc.d/slapd rcvar which in this case tells us the control variable is $slapd_enable, so /etc/rc.conf needs to contain slapd_enable=YES As a bonus, if this isn't set but you want to do a one-off start or stop (for example during testing), you can use onestart and onestop: /usr/local/etc/rc.d/slapd onestart I tried following these guidelines and still getting that silly error by syslog which doesn't give a clue of where the mistake is located. Hi Kevin, After going through all my options with the areca 1120, the solution was easy and at the same time hard for someone new to FreeBSD. The card works 100% with freeBSD 6.1, the only thing I needed to do was upgrade to the latest firmware from the website. Specifically the one that you guys are beta testing dated 5/26/2006 2:15:00 PM you might want to tell all your comstomers using this card with FreeBSD to upgrade to the latest firmware if they are having issues. Is interesting, this is what reca repply back to me. I think areca should add some sort of utility in the controller to find out the disk geometry information in the fly and stop blamming FBSD. The current setup I got in the machine is using 2 SATA (200GB each) with the raid controller that is build into the motherboard (tyan S2885). I wanted to add additional space and I got a Areca 1120 which could hold another 8 sata drives. I only have a 5 bay enclosure so I went ahead and I orderd 5 (300GB) drives. I configure the controller to use Raid 5 with 4 drives and keep 1 as spare in case of a failure. The problem that is bothering me is that the OS works great with the RAID 1 configuration. When I boot into FBSD it all goes ok and I loging and everything , but when I try configuring the RAID 5 disk set using sysinstall fdisk I get the disk geometry error right after selecting the disk set. I am not sure, but is there a way to find out the disk geometry that the controller bios is assuming is the correct one. If there is a way to find that information our, I can just use the G option in fdisk and input the correct disk geometry myself. What aproach is the best one to take in my case. Thank you. Good Morning, Last night I was trying installing a new Areca controller 1120 8 ports using a 5 bay (300GB seagate) drives Raid 5. The main OS is install using the SATA controller in RAID 1 configuration of the mother board, the addition of last night was a separate controller I install.The install when good and I installed my modules in the kernel, now my problem is when I try to partition the volume using fdisk/label with system install it is giving me nasty disk geometry incorrect error, can anyone tell me what is this all about?
