The Shell line is changed, but the db is not update apparently!?

which controllers(devices) to disable in kernel?

2006-03-23 Thread Perica Veljanovski

Hi,

I bought a new pc with GIGABYTE GA-K8VT800 VIA K8T800 mother board (has
ata, sata, raid) and a SATA IBM HDD and installed FreeBSD 6.0.

I'm building a custom kernel and I was wondering which
controllers(devices) I need for my new kernel to support my motherboard
properly?

Is there a way to see which devices my pc uses from the GENERIC kernel?

thanks,

Mail Server tutorial

2006-03-15 Thread Perica Veljanovski

Hi,

I'm looking for a tutorial/howto for setting up an e-mail server on my
fbsd.
I prefer postfix with mysql authentication, web interface for
administration and for the users, as well as imap, pop3, spam filter and
anti virus software.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

wifi support

2005-05-12 Thread Perica Veljanovski
Hello,
I'm thinking of buying a Fujitsu-Siemens AMILO Pro V2020 laptop which
has a Pentium M 725 (centrino) processor, Inter 855GME chipset with
integrated Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Fast Ethernet LAN.

Since I'm not at all familiar with with the wi-fi technology and can't
seem to find this particular wifi on
http://www.freebsd.org/releases/5.4R/hardware-i386.html#WLAN, I would
like to ask you if I'm mistaking?

Does FreeBSD support this WLAN adapter? If not, is it going to be
supported in near future?

dual boot two disk

2005-03-17 Thread Perica Veljanovski
Hi
I have a problem booting the second disk with fbsd's boot manager. I
installed a new disk as pri/master (ad0) and moved my old disk to
sec/master (ad2). Then devided ad0 (40GB) with fbsd's fdisk in 10G (ufs)
and 30G (fat) and installed FreeBSD 5.3 with a boot manager on the first
10G. When I boot the system I get:

F1 FreeBSD (the fbsd on ad0s1)
F2 DOS (the 30G fat, ad0s2)
F5 Other (again the fbsd)
So there is no option to boot from the second disk!?
Allso when I unlplug ad0 or change the BIOS to boot from ad2 (hd1 as he
sees it), WinXP boots just fine, meaning, there is no problem with the
mbr on ad2.

I read the man for boot0cfg, but I can't make heads or tails of ti!!!
how do I configure/install the boo0 to show the second disk ni the boot
menu?

Hmmm. I am not exactly clear from your description, but...
I would expect that when you hit F5, you would be presented with
a new menu that included the ad2 disk.Maybe that disk does not
really have an MBR, but only a boot block (the second part of
the disk boot process [or third if you count BIOS]). I believe
each disk that has bootable slices (which have boot blocks/sectors)
also needs to have an MBR for it to work right. If you are brave,
try using fdisk to write the MBR to ad2 as well. I don't think
that would mess up anything and might be what is missing.

Something like: fdisk -BI -b /boot/boot0 ad2
I don't know if FreeBSD 5.3 still keeps its MBR in /boot/boot0.
You may have to check that.
jerry

That's what I thought. F5 should move on to the next disk, or more
precise the next disk's mbr. But it does not.
Anyways, the second disk has a MBR on it. As I said, when I unplug the
fist dis and boot the box with the old disk (second disk) only, I get a
normal boot menu from Widows XP (which has it's own boot loader = WinXP
and Win2k Pro). So the problem is not that the second disk has bad or no
MBR, rather that FreeBSD's boot manager boot0 doesn't give me a chance
to boot from the second disk.

I thought about overwriting the mbr on the second disk (ad2), but I
don't feel very brave :P I think that will most defenetly remove WinXP
boot manager and probably remove some partitioning info, thus I'll loose
the data. And since I'm not familiar with WinXP boot process, and don't
know if FreeBSD's boot manager will pick up where WinXP/MBR left off, I
rather not do that without any assurance.

I read the man for boot0cfg, but I can't make heads or tails of ti!!!
how do I configure/install the boo0 to show the second disk ni the boot
menu?

I generally use fdisk and not boot0cfg, but I think it is basically
the same for what you are trying to do here.

Something like: boot0cfg -B -b /boot/boot0 -o packet ad2
You might want to add -f some_file_name if you want it to save whatever
was in the sector0 before the command. You can put it back if you need.
You may also need -m 0x1 or -m 0x3 or -m 0x7 or -m 0xf depending
on if you have 1, 2, 3 or 4 slices actively bootable. I think it
is supposed to figure it out, but if it doesn't, then try those.
You migh also want to include the -v flag to make it print out more
stuff when it runs.

You might also want to do the exactly the same or the same fdisk to ad0
as well.

I got that part :P What I didn't understand is how the hell I'm I
suppose to let him know about the other disk :)

By the way, what happened to ad1? (I don't muck with IDE - I have SCSI
so, I am not up on its device naming schemes)
Good luck,
jerry

BIOS names disks as hdN, and bsd as adN (as you already know). The main
difference is that BIOS just increments N for the next disk (example:
pri/master=hd0, pri/slave=cdrom, sec/master=hd1) and fbsd decides N by
IDE position (example: pri/master=ad0, pri/slave=acd0, sec/master=ad2)

sysinstall/fdisk drive geometry problem

2005-03-16 Thread Perica Veljanovski
Hello
I finally got another hdd for my home box, decided to do a fresh fbsd
install and I ended up with a disk problem :( :

ide0: 40GB [FreeBSD wannabe (ufs2) 10GB, storage2 (fat32) 30GB]
ide2: 40GB [WinXP (ntfs) 10GB, storage1 (fat32) 30GB]
Now when I begin the installation, and go to the partitioning section,
fdisk complains about drive geometry and rearranges the drive. Here are
the settings:

cyls/heads/sectors
19xxx/16/255 (BIOS)
7xxx/16/63 (dmesg this is what fbsd complains to)
4xxx/255/63 (the new fdisk rearrangement)
and FreeBSD's fdisk seems to get off on setting the head count to 255!!!
I tried setting the bios value and fdisk complains again, but for some
reason when I swap the heads and sectors values it does not. Same goes
for the dmesg values (drive geometry from the dmesg output).

Since I have no experience with changing drive geometry, nor do I
understand the bloody thing, I have several issues:

- Will I loose the data on 'storage2' if I change the drive geometry?
- How should I set up the new drive geometry? What setting is
faster/better? more cyls or more sectors (since fdisk is set to use 255
heads)?
- If I backup 'storage2', change drive geometry as fbsd/fdisk suggests
(or whatever), create a 10g slice and leave the other space
unpartitioned, will I be able to partition and format the drive to fat32
from WinXP?

That's about it... any examples would be great!
thanks ahead!

multi-homed host routing problem

2004-11-14 Thread Perica Veljanovski
Hi all

I have a fbsd 4.7 box that has 2 nics rl0 rl1. On rl0 i have a public
ip address and on rl1 I have a private 10.20.30.0/24, and I'm running
squid proxy for my private ip's.
Now i've added a 3rd nic rl2 which has an ADSL router connected to it
(another internet source).

What I wanted to do is use squid's tcp_outgoing_address to divide
traffic by splitting the private ip class with squid's acl's. However
this does not work.

My question is: How do i route part of the private ip's trough rl0 and
the other part trough rl2. Can it be done only by routing or should i
use nat (on the rl2 side there is no need for nat, the adsl router has
natd)?

problem with php mysql

I have trouble installing/configuring php with mysql support. I tired
installing the php5 interpreter WITH_MYSQL=yes from the ports, and when
I try to start a mysql_connect(); php syntax, i get:

Call to undefined function mysql_pconnect() in someFile.php on line N.

I tired installing mod_php5 (first i removed lang/php5) and the same
thing happens.
php.ini and httpd.conf are ok as far as I can tell :P But since I'm not
experienced in Apache/php configuration, I would appreciate some pointers
to where should I look for mysql support configuration.

If you did see the normal kind of burbling, but still find ports use the
original version, you probably haven't done:

 #use.perl port

all done :)

I did the make install in ssh from a windows box, an gues what, the
windows box crashed during the make install on the fbsd box. And since
I'm lazy enough not to run script(1) I didn't see the end of make
which probobly sad what you sugested.

10x Peter.

help me make a Mail Server choice

2004-06-04 Thread Perica Veljanovski
Hi again

It turned out to be a public mail server as well! The choice for the MTA
on fell on postfix :) Now I have to chose POP/IMAP and Virus/Spam.

I would appreciate if you can give me some input on your experience with
Cyrus or Courier, since they are my choices for pop/imap. Also I'd like
some suggestions on what to use for virus/spam protection, and how they
are implemented in postfix?

My first mail on the subject from 2004-06-01:

I have some trouble choosing between postfix and qmail for the new
corporate mail server I'll be making. I'm looking for the one with least
administrative overhead (since I run a one man show) and security is a
big issue. Also, I'm looking for some guidance (choices) for POP, IMAP
and webMail interface as well as Virus and SPAM (preferably free)
protection.

Another issue is the FreeBSD version. Should I stay with the 4.x-STABLE
or should I go with the 5.x. If I set up a 5.2-Release, will the upgrade
to 5.3-STABLE be enough, or is there a possibility that I will have to
reformat and do a clean 5.3 install.

perl serial port access

2003-10-17 Thread Perica Veljanovski
Hi,

What is the name of the /dev for the serial port in FreeBSD. dmesg says
there are sio0 and sio1 but there are no such file names in /dev.

What module should I use in Perl to access (read/write strings) to the
serial port?

Which Radiusd to use?

2003-08-29 Thread Perica Veljanovski
Hi

I'm looking for a free radiusd, to handle a pre-paid dial-up system. It
should have different time zone charging, and every imaginable pre-paid
card limitation (expire date, hours limit, CLID filter, etc.).

Dual homed host routing problem

2003-03-27 Thread Perica Veljanovski
Hi,

I'm running FreeBSD 4.7-RELEASE and I have trouble routing between two
NIC's. On one side I have a 192.168.1.0/24 network and on the other a 212.110.94.64/27
network on which I have mail and web servers, which the 192.168.1.0/24
hosts should be able to reach.

Here are the ifconfig and netstat -r outputs:
wb0: flags=8843UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST mtu 1500
inet 212.110.94.84 netmask 0xffe0 broadcast 212.110.94.95
inet6 fe80::280:48ff:feb5:af3%wb0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x1
ether 00:80:48:b5:0a:f3
media: Ethernet autoselect (100baseTX full-duplex)
status: active
rl0: flags=8843UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST mtu 1500
inet 192.168.1.1 netmask 0xff00 broadcast 192.168.1.255
inet6 fe80::202:44ff:fe4f:958e%rl0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x2
ether 00:02:44:4f:95:8e
media: Ethernet autoselect (10baseT/UTP)
status: active

Routing tables
Internet:
DestinationGatewayFlagsRefs Use Netif Expire
default 212.110.94.65 UGSc40wb0
localhost localhost UH 00lo0
192.168.1 link#2 UC 10 rl0
192.168.1.255 ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff UHLWb 1 45rl0
212.110.94.64/27 link#1 UC 80wb0

and I have net.inet.ip.forwarding set to 1

How do I get my box to route packets between the two interfaces 192.168.1.1
and 212.110.94.84?

Squid external authentication startup problem

2003-03-27 Thread Perica Veljanovski
Hi,

I'm running FreeBSD 4.7-RELEASE and I have Squid 2.5.STABLE1 and MySQL 3.23.54
installed. Squid is configured to use an external shell script sqauth as
an authenticator via MySQL database, and it all works fine. Whenever I
start squid as root it starts the squid daemon with 5 child proceses of
sqauth (as configured), BUT when I reboot and start squid from /etc/rc.local
or /usr/local/etc/rc.d/squid.sh the squid daemon starts without the
sqauth child proceses. Same thing happens when I start squid from
/etc/crontab as root, or any other user for that mather.
I tryed giving 777 to squauth and squid, it doese not help.

Doese anyone have any idea why is this happening?
Can you give me another solution on starting squid after boot time with
some kind of a script.

Has anyone any recommended perl development editors? Once with syntax
highlighting and stuff would be great!

 Thanks,
