Intel 5100 WiFi

2008-11-16 Thread Steve Tremblett
Is there any development being done to support the Intel 5100 wireless device?

Linux support is very recent (within the last month), and I believe it
requires a firmware blob. Does FreeBSD align with OpenBSD on the
whole blob debate?

Where is gnome? I can't find anything that looks like it among the
packages. All I found was something to insert GNOME menus into window
  manager, or something like that.

There is a simple path to getting up and running.

1 - install X11. There is a single port (/usr/ports/x11/xorg) which
will install all the required packages.

2 - config X11. Use xorgconfig and come up with a basic functional
config (it will reside in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xorg.conf). There is a
manpage for xorg.conf so once you have the basic one it is probably
easier to tweak it in a text editor to iron out the kinks. The xorg
manpage should point you to related manpages.

3 - install gnome. Also simple - install /usr/ports/x11/gnome2 and
you'll get all the packages.

You can install gdm (see /usr/X11R6/etc/rc.d/) to start X/gnome at boot
time. Alternatively, make a .xinitrc file in your home directory
containing a call to gnome-session and run startx.

good luck

firefox tabs broken?

2004-11-29 Thread Steve Tremblett

I messed up the gnome 2.8 upgrade (portupgrade ran away when I wasn't
looking, but gnome_upgrade.sh saved the day), so I'm not sure if this
issue is with firefox or gnome (but I'm suspecting firefox).

When opening tabs in firefox 1.0, they immediately show (Untitled)
with a middle-click, CTRL-click on a link, or right-click - Open link
in new tab. When I drag a link to the tab bar, an empty tab is created
but the link loads in the first tab.

Help please this is driving me nuts!!

firefox menu display issue

2004-06-17 Thread Steve Tremblett

This is a minor annoyance, but since I haven't seen anyone else comment
on it I figure I should throw it out and see.

When selecting any menu in firefox 0.9 (and 0.9_1), both the focus
highlight and the menu title appear as a solid white bar with no text.
Has anyone seen this? Any ideas on whether the problem lies within
firefox or maybe gnome themes? I'm using the Simple theme unchanged
from its default, but a lot of gnome components were included in my
update yesterday.

Re: Devil Mascot

2004-06-14 Thread Steve Tremblett

You may think that is a small issue, but when you are trying to create
market awareness you need a mascot that evokes simplicity and goodwill, not
one that evokes evil and deception.

For the original inspiration, look up Maxwell's daemon on google. In
the 19th century, Maxwell used the daemon entity to represent
thermodynamic forces acting between molecules. I first heard of it in a
chemistry textbook where a fairy character was used as a tour guide
for atoms/molecules.

And if the cartoon picture of the BSD daemon is enough to give you the
willies, it is beyond the scope of freebsd-questions to help you ;)

decisions for MAME machine

2004-06-03 Thread Steve Tremblett

I'm making a MAME cabinet and I'm starting to evaluate as much
MAME-related software as I can find. Seeing as there is some Linux
software out there, I was wondering if anyone has done a project with a
FreeBSD box? A lot of these projects use DOS SVGA - how does FreeBSD
compare in terms of performance/usability? What about Linux?

experiences/advice/warnings welcome!

I am already familiar with various sucks or rules opinions - stick
to the topic plz! :)

cheers,

Stick to 4.7 - 5.0 is not quite ready for primetime, but feel free to

CURRENT is a development stream and not intended for general use. It

Re: Boot Splash questions

2002-07-25 Thread Steve Tremblett

- enable it in your kernel

- set /boot/loader.conf like so:

splash_bmp_load=YES
bitmap_load=YES
bitmap_name=/boot/splash.bmp

- install a bmp in /boot/splash.bmp - it must be 8bit, 320x200

IIRC it stays up for most of the boot, but it's been some time since I
used it. I had a URL for splash screen images, but it appears to be
dead.
