Syntax error in rc.conf - cannot fix
I am setting up a new server so I could just reinstall, but this is a learning opportunity. I was changing the hostname of the computer. In rc.conf I apparently left the leading off the name. BSD doesn't like this. It stops the boot and allows/forces me to a shell. So I found that cat shows me the error of my ways. vi apparently doesn't exist or is stored somewhere that I cannot find because find does not work either. I did find ed and thought I would be learning how to use it, but alas trying to launch it tells me that I have a readonly file system. So, is there any way for me to fix my typo, or is reinstall my only option. Re: Syntax error in rc.conf - cannot fix
It works. Thanks all. XP recognizes my Samba Server now too. Apparently XP did not like my old hostname: localhost, claimed someone else on the network was already using that name, probably itself. What versions of Tomcat and Java work on FreeBSD
I had a jsp web application written for me which was setup on RedHat9. I would like to move this onto FreeBSD or OpenBSD if possible. The Tomcat version used was 4.1 and the Java SDK used was Java 2 SDK Standard Edition 1.4.2 Will these versions run on FreeBSD 4.8, 4.9, or 5.2 or do I have to stay with Linux without a rewrite. If it will run, are there big changes in file paths, etc.? I currently have 4.8 but could of course get newer stuff. Mozilla not a menu choice in Gnome
I have a FreeBSD 4.8 server set up. During the sysinstall I specified that I wanted Mozilla to install. From the Gnome gui, Mozilla is not a menu choice. How do I get it onto the menu? Sendmail complains about server name
I just installed FreeBSD 4.8. The screen that asks for ip addresses and server name required me to type in a server name of some sort. I put in BSDSRVR1 as the name. That screen was content with the answer, but each time I start the computer SENDMAIL complains that the name is no good and then sleeps two or three times before trying again. It eventually continues and boots ok. I was adding a user and one of the prompts wanted to send an initial email to the user. I accepted the default yes. SENDMAIL again complained about the name I chose and went to sleep again for a minute. I hit a key and was able to continue. This is an internal SAMBA server so I don't have a name of the style www.xxx like I saw in the example. What is it that it doesn't like? How to shut down
I am a new user learning about Unix. I found the shutdown command and have been using shutdown now to shut down before powering off. When the pc boots up it complains that it was incorrectly shut down. Am I following an incorrect procedure?
