Should adding "nwkey key" to ifconfig_wlan0 line above be enough?
Key may be in ascii or in hex (in which case it must start with 0x).

As you should probably already know wep provides 0% security so
having wep or open network gives you almost exactly same amount of security.

wireless help with wep authentication

2011-11-20 Thread Rob Clark
Running fbsd 8.2R on a Dell C640 laptop.
Using a pcmcia card with atheros.

My 2wire wireless router comes setup default with
wep open with wireless security enabled, i.e., needs
the default passkey from the router. I cannot get the
ifconfig line correct so as to authenticate this way,
and have tried many different strings of text here.

However, following the handbook, I turned off "enable
security" (on the 2wire router) to test things, hence,
using wep (not as authmode shared or authmode open)
and it works using the following in /etc/rc.conf:

wlans_ath0="wlan0"
ifconfig_wlan0="ssid Mynetname DHCP"

Mynetname is different -- of course.

I can browse the web and ping with 0% packet loss.

I have not delved into using
a /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf yet, I was
hoping i could get it done in rc.conf with ifconfig.

I have tried many many things, for days on end for
authenticating with the passkey from the router.
Any help appreciated, I can provide further info and
things I've tried -- most things in the handbook
wireless section, minus wpa_supplicant.conf.

Thanks In Advance,
Rob

wireless help

2008-06-20 Thread David Gurvich
Hello,
You say you've created a static ip for your computer. What is the
actual ip? If your router is on subnet 192.168.22.0, then your ip must
also be on that subnet. Also, is your router configured as a gateway
or router and is DHCP enabled on the router?

ifconfig

This looks ok. Mind you, I'm not all that up on wireless, so I don't
know if that could be part of your issue.

arp
? (192.168.1.3) at (incomplete) on ath0 [ethernet]
? (192.168.1.254) at (incomplete) on ath0 [ethernet]

This is generally telling you that you have recently attempted to
communicate to the IP's, and address resolution is in progress (and in
your case, most likely will timeout).

The rest of your message is irrelevant at this point, since you can't
even resolve the layer 2 addresses on the local link.

I'd have to say at this point that either there is a problem with the
wireless config on the FreeBSD machine, or there is a firewall on the
machine blocking your traffic.

Does the linksys show you as connected? If you enable DHCP on the
linksys, does it register a client lease for the box?

If you cable yourself directly to the Linksys (as opposed to wireless)
with the same IP configuration, does it work then?

Technically, FreeBSD is not Linux. The Unix family tree looks something
like the following (greatly simplified):

 Bell Labs Unix
   |

   | |
BSD Unix SysV Unix
   | |
   | |
 FreeBSD Solaris Linux

Linux is way over to the right by itself because it doesn't really have
any "genetic" relation to the others. FreeBSD doesn't share any original
"genetic" material with the SysV line, either, but that's basically
because it "evolved" to that point -- whereas Linux was created from
scratch to emulate (mostly SysV) Unix functionality. There's a lot in
common between most Linux distributions and most FreeBSD installs, but
that's in large part because of the plethora of open source applications
that can be installed on both, and because the two are both tied to a
sort of Unix "tradition" of OS design. It's not so much because of any
actual family relation, per se.

Sorry if this seems somewhat off the topic of what you're asking. I'm
just trying to be informative. A better way to phrase your original
sentence would have been something like "I am completely new to Unix-like
systems and need help with wireless connectivity."

Is the Linksys access point a router? Is it running NAT? Your FreeBSD
system might effectively be tucked away in a subnet, which could possibly
account for (some of?) your problems.

Does this mean you can't ping the Linksys access point? Is the access
point configured to ignore pings?

You probably don't need three copies of the same line -- or are those
three different IP addresses that you've Xed out? Is the period after
"search" what's actually in the file, or did you elide some of the
contents of that line?

Sorry if I'm not as useful as I should be -- I still haven't fully woken
up, and may miss something obvious.

Correct.
I have 4 other laptops on this AP that all have internet connectivity (2
winxp and 2 win2k pro).
All configured with the gateway as 192.168.1.254 (the BS router)

Any ping except to 192.168.1.12 (manually assigned) and 127.0.0.1 and
localhost result in either "host is down" or a name resolve issue, ie cannot
resolve host.
Additionally EricBSD (manually assigned name to box) returns with a cannot
resolve host as well.

I will post the result of the below shortly.
# ifconfig -a
# netstat -rn
# ping ip.of.linksys
# ping ip.of.bellsouth
# arp -a

topology:
wall-->bellsouth router-->linksys AP
linksys has a static IP of 192.168.1.3
bellsouth router has a static IP of 192.168.1.254

You need to configure different prefixes (aka subnets) on each side of
the Linksys router:

LAN side on Bellsouth: 192.168.1.254 255.255.255.0
WAN side on Linksys:192.168.1.3 255.255.255.0

LAN (wifi) side of Linksys: 192.168.2.1 255.255.255.0
Laptop: 192.168.2.2 255.255.255.0

Laptop gateway: 192.168.2.1

A trick I recommend very frequently to our ADSL subs that want to
implement a wireless router into their network who are already using our
equipment that has NAT enabled (to avoid double-NAT), is to disable DHCP
on the LAN side of the Linksys, disable the WAN interface, and connect
the ADSL modem to one of the LAN ports on the Linksys.

Essentially, your access point will then be just that.

Hope I understood your problem properly.

Re: wireless help

2007-01-04 Thread Sunnz

Have you tried read this section of the handbook yet?

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/network-wireless.html

BTW, if you are using WEP (though WEP isn't really secure), then you
shouldn't use wpa_supplicant.

Are you sure that you are using WPA, not WEP? It seems like that you
have a WEP key, not a WPA key.

2007/1/4, Juan Ortega <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Hi im having trouble setting up my PCI card to connect to my access point
I have freeBSD-RC2-RELEASE
The driver I installed for it using ndis
when I enter the command "ifconfig ndis0 up scan"
it shows my access point

I tried ifconfig, and wpa_supplicant to configure it but dosent work

Heres what I have need to configure it to;

Infrastructue Mode
SSID: 2WIRE701
BSSID: 00:14:95:c6:af:91
Authmode: SHARED
WEP-KEY: 2205801095
Channel: 6

I'm not sure what weptxkey for my access point is,
if I need it, anyways I can know?

for the IP, cant DHCP set one up for it?

how do I put all that in ifconfig or wpa_supplicant
to make it connect?
