Update of bug #14136 (project freeciv):

Follow-up Comment #1:

I've made sure all references to ftp.freeciv.org point to
download.gna.org/freeciv and removed references to upload.freeciv.org. Also
fixed some outdated links on the Nations page. I think this is enough to
close this bug.

[Freeciv-Dev] [bug #14857] Triremes can go anywhere in supplied scenarios in 2.2

2009-11-29 Thread Jacob Nevins

URL:
  http://gna.org/bugs/?14857

Summary: Triremes can go anywhere in supplied scenarios in
2.2
 Project: Freeciv
Submitted by: jtn
Submitted on: Sunday 29/11/09 at 10:55
Category: None
Severity: 3 - Normal
Priority: 5 - Normal
  Status: None
 Assigned to: None
Originator Email:
 Open/Closed: Open
 Release:
 Discussion Lock: Any
Operating System: None
 Planned Release: None

___

Details:

Triremes can now travel on any (shallow) Ocean tile rather than being
tethered to coasts as they were in 2.1. The map generation now provides the
constraints on their movement.

However, the scenarios supplied by default (Earth, Europe etc) haven't been
updated to add Deep Ocean (and Lake) tiles. This means that as soon as you
have Triremes in these scenarios, you can go anywhere on the map. These seems
wrong, and like a regression from 2.1.

The obvious fix is to add Deep Oceans to the scenario save files. I could
probably have a go at this. I think it'll break compatibility with rulesets
that don't have Deep Ocean or Lake terrain (e.g., civ1/civ2); does this
matter?

[Freeciv-Dev] Lakes

2009-11-29 Thread Jacob Nevins
At the moment Lakes are just a less good version of Ocean (no whales).
In the real world, access to fresh water is important, and I idly wonder
whether the game could reflect this.

The best tweak I've thought of is that Lakes get the effect of Harbour
for free (+1 food) -- the benefits of fresh water are mainly on the
population, after all. Building a Harbour wouldn't increase this further
for Lake tiles.

Perhaps that's too powerful, especially early in the game; it could be
balanced by reducing the trade (lakes aren't conduits to trade as the
ocean is). So Lakes would be 2/0/1, like grassland-with-river, except
that it couldn't be increased by irrigation/roads or Harbour.

The effects of the Fish special might need tweaking too. Not sure
whether Offshore Platform should still work -- probably it should.

I got to thinking about this because it's currently possible to have an
Ocean tile next to a Lake tile with a sharp boundary (by transforming a
suitably placed Swamp). The obvious fix would be to flood any connected
Lake with (shallow) Ocean as soon as it's linked to the ocean; this
isn't too different in principle from the current river-extension
behaviour when raising Swamp from the ocean. Currently, such a change
would be more or less cosmetic, but if Lakes had actual gameplay value,
it could become strategic; if you control a tile that could link a lake
to the sea, and your enemy is at the other end of the lake, suddenly you
can make life difficult for them.

I realise it's a bit late to be proposing such a potentially balance-
upsetting change for 2.2. Also, please say if you'd rather I engaged in
random speculation on forum.freeciv.org rather than here.

 Planned Release: 2.2.0

___

Details:

Originally reported in bug #14137: This patch standardizes the year format in
nation rulesets on the traditional 'BC' and 'AD' to be consistent with what's
used in-game in Freeciv. It also makes sure there is a whitespace between the
year and BC/AD. In some cases the line breaks have been rearranged to keep the
string width.

The patch also includes:

*Minor typo fixes
*Other consistency fixes, such as WWI - World War I
*Minor leader title fixes, mainly adding the 'female' qualifier

 Planned Release: 2.3.0

Details:

Patch for trunk I was working on it for more than one month:
* The registry stuff never stops Freeciv. Most of the function return FALSE
or NULL on error. secfile_error() provides the last error message.
* Added a new boolean type in registry (TRUE or FALSE).
* The interface becomes very simpler and more flexible. You can issue
function directly to the section and the entry structures (e.g. removing a
full section). Use secfile_, section_ and entry_ prefixes for all
functions.

  Hi again Gavin,

I read your original announcement again and noted that you stated
there that the files are covered by the Creative Commons Sampling Plus
1.0 license, which is good news. My suggestion is that you create a
file named COPYING which includes the full text of the license as it
  appears here:

  http://creativecommons.org/licenses/sampling+/1.0/legalcode

In addition, my reading of the 'Attribution' clause of the license is
that you're obliged to somehow give credit to the authors of the files
when you distribute them. Such information usually goes into a file
called AUTHORS, according to open source convention.

Then put these together with a README file in the root of the
distribution package and we're good to go. :)

  Best,
