Hello Pat, Eric, and everyone else, Clarification: Formerly, Ikon was sold as an OS (for a short period from September to November this year), with the FreeDOS kernel and some other GPL code included in binary form. The source for GPL programs was available as a separate download. The Ikon GUI was later offered as public domain software (this month), without details of how much was included. This was the author's omission. I downloaded it and found that it does NOT contain anything but the Ikon GUI, in binary and source forms. In other words, the GPL code has been removed (I believe it all is standard FreeDOS software, including kernel and CRYNWR packet drivers) in order to offer only the author's software. The notice said simply that the author was releasing the Ikon GUI into the public domain, and switching to a Haiku-based distro (with the same name). Anyone wishing to continue development is welcome to, provided that they DO NOT use the same name. So, I apologize for not being clearer. However, my main point was asking about the possibility of including size opimizations as build options in the kernel, and mentioning the cross-linked files issue. Additionally, I mentioned that whether a Linux distro uses a real VFAT filesystem is dependent on what the kernel builders want, so working around the hack is not necessarily top priority. Hi Pat, Allow me to make this perfectly clear: the FreeDOS kernel *IS NOT PUBLIC DOMAIN* and will never be. Please do not spread such rumors. I do not see such rumors but... OFFTOPIC: JaguiD (Java with GUI for DOS) might be worth testing; the Ikon GUI, offered commercially this fall as an OS with some (unspecified) FreeDOS kernel, is now public domain/unmaintained --it should work with FreeDOS. Well only the GUI is public domain, but if their download still contains some unspecified FreeDOS kernel then you could ask them to make licensing clear on their page and in their download.
