Re: [Freedos-user] FreeDOS 2022 calendar

2022-01-03 Thread John Price
Are you doing this to make money for FreeDOS? If not, why not make the
digital images available for free? I can see some taking this and adding
their own country's holidays, etc. I personally don't need a calendar that
only has one date marked (no disrespect to FreeDOS), but if it had other
dates that I care about, I'd probably pay to print it and use it.

Just food for thought.

Thanks,

I think it is because the PC always had video,
(there may be some special machines that don´t)

while audio cards were always add-ons.

EMM has everything to do with memory management,

Something to play MP3:- The best option by far is
MPXPLAY:http://mpxplay.sourceforge.net/
Something to play movies:- Although the complete version is not free, QuickView

If I don't remember badly, there is a DOS port of Mplayer; maybe, somebody can

Hi folks.

I am now looking for Freedos to be a viable alternative
to Windows for the rest of the things I would like to do.
What I'm looking for is Win32 applications that run
under both Freedos+HX and Windows 10. In particular
I want:

1. Something to display JPEGs. Just one JPEG at a time
is fine. I actually have some software to do this already
(public domain C code), but although it works under
Win10, it produces garbage on Freedos + HX.

2. Something to play MP3s.

3. Something to play movies like MP4s.

4. Something to read and write text email - for this I would
like a Win32 console mode application using ANSI escape
sequences. Currently I have "msged" working for Fidonet
technology messages.

5. Something to send/receive email to gmail. I am expecting
this to be DOS-specific rather than a Win32 application, and
I am expecting to need to use ethernet instead of Wifi, as I
believe the ethernet spec is open but the Wifi spec is not.

Does such software exist? If Win32 applications are not
available, I'm interested in DOS alternatives.

Note that I have produced my own Freedos distribution if
anyone is interested. It is available at http://pdos.org

Thanks. Paul.

[Freedos-user] Updates on FreeDOS videos

2022-01-03 Thread Jim Hall
Hi everyone!

Some folks had asked that I share updates of the FreeDOS videos on our
YouTube channel. I try not to share these all the time, but about once
a month or so.

Our YouTube channel is at https://www.youtube.com/freedosproject

I didn't post many videos in December because of the holidays, but
here are the videos from the last month:

* To celebrate reaching 3000 subscribers to the channel, I shared a
video tour of my home office
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Np5HiOnabKg

* "YouTube shorts" are popular, and I thought it would be funny to do
a quick video about how to set "dark mode" on FreeDOS (and because DOS
is white text on a black background, "dark mode" is just CLS)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbe8xhn_24o

* I shared a longer walkthrough of the FreeDOS 1.3 RC5 distribution
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5G0z0zq_Ik

* For New Year Day, I posted a short video about printing the date
"01-Jan-2022" in a DOS spreadsheet
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHGFForxdlM

* Yesterday, I posted a video about how to install FreeDOS 1.3 RC5 on VirtualBox
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vE9CwMBvqnw

I try to post videos about once a week. Coming up next in the queue:

* On Jan 9, look for a video that showcases some games in FreeDOS 1.3 RC5

* On Jan 16, watch for a video about how to use the Pico text editor
(someone asked me about Pico in RC5, so I thought I'd do a quick demo)

Some planned videos:

1. I'm thinking about doing more videos on FreeDOS 1.3 RC5. That
includes the Bonus CD, apps, more games, other editors, etc.

2. I'm also planning a "retro" programming video, about how I started
writing the first FreeDOS commands in 1994. [And in that video, I'm
thinking about going "old school" and using Edlin.]

3. I also want to do a few more programming videos about graphics
mode. These were requested in YouTube comments. I'll probably do one
on how to use _getimage and _putimage in OpenWatcom, another video
about shooting a ball across the screen, and another video about how
to draw a simple shape (like a banana, if you wanted to make a
Gorillas-style game) in graphics mode.

4. I'm planning a video about "A brief history of DOS spreadsheets"
too. I gave that as a conference talk at All Things Open in October,
and I'd like to do it again for our channel. (I'll probably also do a
related video to show forward referencing in spreadsheets - and how
VisiCalc doesn't do that, but Lotus 1-2-3 does.)

5. And after the spreadsheets video, I'll start a video series about
how to use a spreadsheet. These will use a DOS spreadsheet, but I'll
also talk about how the concepts translate to modern spreadsheets like
LibreOffice and Excel.

6. More videos about DOS games. I'll probably do one on PvP Gem (the
game I wrote and shared the other day) but I'll also cover other games
like the DOS demo of Tomb Raider.

[Freedos-user] FreeDOS 2022 calendar

2022-01-03 Thread Jim Hall
Hi everyone!

I created a 2022 FreeDOS calendar, where each month shows a different
screenshot from FreeDOS. And to make it look really nice, I applied a
"blur" effect behind the screenshot, and a "video" effect to the
screenshot itself, with a drop shadow.

The months are:

01 Jan - Install
02 Feb - First boot
03 Mar - FDIMPLES
04 Apr - AMB Help
05 May - Senet
06 Jun - Edit
07 Jul - DN2
08 Aug - Edlin
09 Sep - Em Pong
10 Oct - Freemacs
11 Nov - HEXED
12 Dec - Smiley

I initially created this calendar just for myself, so I could put a
new calendar on my office wall. But I thought others might like it
too, so I made it available for sale via the print-on-demand site
Lulu.

I didn't put any holidays on the calendar, so it can apply to any
region. The only marked date is June 29 for the FreeDOS anniversary.

I just ordered a copy for myself, and I'll let you know how it comes
out. [These are print-on-demand, so delivery times vary. I think the
last time I ordered a calendar, it arrived in about 10 days.] If you
want to order one of your own, here's the link:

DJGPP has not been updated in a while for a couple reasons.

I have nothing against it. But, I don’t use it.

There are numerous pieces. Which aren’t needed? What relies on other things?
Which are the most popular? Which should be included?

I look at that large collection of components and have only a vague idea of
what is what. I could spend hours, days or weeks working on updating them. But,
would have no idea if the end result would even be usable by anyone.

It needs to be updated by someone who uses it. No one has volunteered to
provide those updated versions.

I have too many other things to do and will not spend the time figuring it out.
Maybe someday I’ll work on updating it. But, I don’t see that happening anytime
in the foreseeable future.

You can just load an old profile into a new version and that's it. If
you use extensions, then pick an old enough version that they work.

Nothing you've said is remotely persuasive, IMHO.
