Re: [Freedos-user] Announce: New release of XFDOS graphical FreeDOS distribution

2013-03-31 Thread Georg Potthast
Hi Jose,

there are various ways to make a bootable flash disk that boots FreeDOS.
Once you
have got one running, you can copy the hard disk version of XFDOS to this
flash disk.
If the BIOS boots the flash disk as drive C: you are all set. If it boots it
as e.g. drive B:
you will have to edit the drive letter in the DOP files in the desktop
directory plus
the appstart.bat file and replace C with e.g. B.

If you boot from various PCs you can make a separate DESKTOPB and a
DESKTOPC directory. You can then rename these as required before running the
appstart.bat file to start the desktop.

Re: [Freedos-user] Announce: New release of XFDOS graphical FreeDOS distribution

2013-03-30 Thread Georg Potthast
Hi Jose,

it depends how you write the ISO file to the CD. I am not familiar with the
tools you used but e.g. Windows explorer will usually just write the
unpacked ISO file as-is to the CD. If you can see the file on the CD with
Windows explorer it is not written correctly. The files on a bootable
El-Torito CD are usually not visible from Windows explorer - at least on my
Windows XP machine.

The XFDOS ISO file has to be written as a CD image to the CD. I usually do
that with Nero, but other programs will work as well, e.g. UltraISO.

Then you have to check that your BIOS is set so the CD drive will be used
before the hard disk as the boot device. This is usually the case though.

XFDOS is graphical FreeDOS distribution. It consists of a graphical desktop
called SLWM combined with the
FLTK based applications I ported to DOS plus other DOS applications.

This provides a desktop similar to Windows for FreeDOS. You can add just
about any application to this desktop
by editing a small configuration file for it. You can move and arrange the
icons as you like on the desktop.

I made an update of XFDOS including the new Dillo for DOS browser version
now. It can be downloaded here:

http://code.google.com/p/nanox-microwindows-nxlib-fltk-for-dos/downloads/list

XFDOS comes in two versions. One is an ISO file to be burned on a CD to
provide a Live-CD of XFDOS. Or you
can download a hard disk version which allows you to start (and exit) the
XFDOS desktop and its applications
from your hard disk.

XFDOS tries to provide common desktop applications used on Windows to
FreeDOS users. These applications
cannot provide all the features of their counterparts on Windows but they
serve the same purpose. Below is
a short comparison. (I hope the dots allow to format the table in text mode)

ApplicationWindows(R)..XFDOS/FreeDOS

Web browserInternet Explorer...Dillo
Word processingMS Word.FlWriter

Personal info manager..Outlook.FlTDJ (no mail)

PDF reader.Acrobat.MuPDF

You are welcome to use XFDOS!
