Re: [Freedos-user] desktop2 in freedos

2011-09-05 Thread Zbigniew
2011/8/27, Jeffrey ellsn...@aol.com:

I use lxde on ubuntu 11.04 and it seems fairly lightweight. There is
also damnsmall linux which can run firefox on a pentium.

Out of curiosity just downloaded Icaros Desktop Light 1.3.0 - in its
manual one can read:
#v+
AROS doesn't need great horsepower [..] Although AROS can run on
low-power and low-end processors, like old 500-1000 MHz ones, you
probably like to choose a faster one. [..] To enjoy a good Icaros
experience, please choose a 1600 MHz processor or a better one [..]
#v-

Not tried that new Icaros yet (tomorrow...), but if good Icaros
experience requires 1,6 GHz Athlon, then Linux can still be described
as lightweight... :)

Re: [Freedos-user] desktop2 in freedos

2011-09-05 Thread dos386
is there anyone who did develop the desktop2 program (by F. Ritter?)

I didn't :-(

Please post shot, license, download link or something useful ;-)

The most stable GUI depends on what you need. If you are wanting to run
Windows applications, 16 bit ones that is, you are somewhat out of luck

No Win16 emulation in HX ... fortunately there exist barely any
useful apps for this hack ... so if you see any just port them ;-)

PS: Win16 DOS-GUI
PPS: Win16 != DOS-GUI (for C geeks)

 Alternative OS'es to Freedos:
 menuetOS

XXX-64 only :-(

 Syllable
 Visopsys

...

ReactOS (WARNING: development is slow. Talking about that prohibited)

It's just off-topic here ;-)

 Linux (various flavors)

CRAP (needs at least 4 cores per 4 GHz and 8 GiB
RAM just to boot up in less than 1 hour)

 Windows 7 (yuck, Microsoft monopoly)

See Linux, + proprietary
