The B&W CAN boot FW drives using XPostFacto's "Helper Disk" boot
process, utilizing an internal HD as a "helper" to enable booting from
any external Firewire HD or optical drive.

Re: B&W won't boot off firewire?

2009-07-30 Thread Jorjo :)

The B/W can´t boot from FW/USB Devices..
just read the B/W Profile in LEM
http://lowendmac.com/ppc/blue-white-power-mac-g3.html
"As on the iMac, USB has practically replaced ADB, but Apple left one
ADB port on the B&W G3 for legacy peripherals. The addition of
FireWire provides a fast alternative to the missing SCSI. (SCSI PCI
cards are readily available, allowing access to SCSI hardware.)
Although this model has FireWire and USB ports (see Apple Knowledge
Base Article #58430, USB Info and Benefits of Dual-Channel USB), it
cannot boot from either. Also, it does not support FireWire Target
Disk Mode."

I don't believe it will. Its hardware related. My Yikes! is the same
way ... you can get around it by using Xpostfacto, and use an onboard
hard drive as the Helper, and then it will seem to be booting off the
external FW enclosure drive. It will then Startup from the external,
but only "via" the internal drive.

Everything after Yikes! I think boots off external FW, but not USB.

I don't think OS 9.1 can utilize large hard drives. Maybe 9.2.2?

LEM Gurus ruling?

B&W won't boot off firewire?

2009-07-30 Thread Bill Christensen

Hey folks,

Is there any hardware related reason that a B&W won't boot off an
external firewire drive. The drive is 250gig, but since it's
external that shouldn't really matter. It's freshly loaded with
10.4.11.

The same drive boots off my gig ether just fine.

I've tried two different B&Ws and neither will boot. One doesn't
even see the drive, though that may be because it's got a stripped
down version of 9.1 on the internal drive. The other runs 10.4.11,
sees the drive, but won't boot off it.

The drive is for a friend who has had repeated crash/corruption
problems with it on his Sawtooth. It's a Seagate SATA drive in an
OWC Neptune enclosure. We've tried changing FW ports, cables,
enclosures, RAM, and even hard drives (the original was a Seagate
SATA 500gig) and now I'm wanting to have him try it for a while on
one of my spare machines to see if things clear up, thinking it may
be a processor or motherboard issue.

Thanks for suggestions.

Re: Scan problems Airport Extreme

2009-07-30 Thread Mike Baker

I don't think you can have a wireless connection from scanners to your
computer. You would think it might work with Bonjour or Rendezvous like a
printer connected to the router would, but I don't think it does.
