I have the same card in my DA with a QS 867 processor. I have the
same issue randomly. I can go for months with it booting fine off of
the Radeon, then it will boot fine, but no video. After start up with
no video, I give it time to load all the startup apps, hit the power
key and return and it shuts down normally.

The kludge I have wound up with is the following:

I picked up a cheap Rage pci video card off the swap list and
installed it.
When I get no video on startup, after shut down I disconnect the DVI-
VGA cable from the Radeon and connect my vga monitor to the Rage.
Start up off the Rage (Radeon is still installed, just nothing hooked
to it).
After normal startup, shut down and reconnect monitor to the Radeon.
99%+ of the time, it boots fine and I go on my merry way with the
accelerated graphics of the 9600.

Sometimes I have to repeat the above.

There have been times I have had to do the above just once, there
have been other times when I have had to do this every day for a
week. Then I can go a couple of months before I need to do it again..

The card is probably taking longer to initialize than the system
expects. Try booting into safe mode or verbose mode - see if that
makes a diff.

Since it only happens on a cold start, *shrug* Just live with it.
You shouldn't be cold starting that often anyway, especially if sleep
works.

Since you're switching video cards anyway... take a good look at the
slot. Make sure it's clean etc. Ditto for the fingers on the card.

The self-test is fairly limited. It's a 2 sec test, after all, not a
10 hr diagnostic. It checks to see that the buses are talking. It
cannot check to see if the end peripheral buses are fully functional
(able to pass data from peripherals) without loading drivers etc.

Video card glitchyness

2009-09-21 Thread Sam Macomber

Speaking of ATi cards.

I've got a G5 version Radeon Pro 9600 64MB card that has the pins
taped to work in my Quicksilver 733. It works, but usually it does
not want to work on startup, screen does not turn on. but if I hit
the reset a few seconds after the ethernet links up(router on my desk)
it works. It'll work fine after that, I can sleep the computer,
etc. it's only on cold restart.

any ideas as to why that is?I've pulled it out for now, but my
wife called me at work annoyed because web images and and such were
sluggish so she wants the 9600 back in but I don't like having to hit
the reset button when I start the machine up...I'm guessing power
issue, has a 1.8GHz upgrade, ATA card, USB 2 card and three HDDs, I
could be wrong though.

Dan, could I please differ with you here. Bong does not mean that the
buses are good. You may recall my PB 1.67. It bonged. But I've come now
to conclude, as suggested by Bruce and Kris, that the ata bus must be
dead. To prove, I booted it using Firewire and it booted. Now I have to
try and see if the optical drive would work while it's booted in
Firewire, to conclude, without hesitation, that the ata bus is dead. If
you need a reminder on that, I'd find the thread link.

The picture is PCI but the description says it's both PCI and AGP.
Personally I avoid such vendors, they just don't know what they are
talking about. But it's a little late for the buyer / OP.

If it hasn't shipped the buyer could try clarifying it with the seller
and canceling the sale if it's AGP.

A faster video card speeds up Quartz, and hence, the whole GUI quite
noticeably, even back in the days of 10.2...windows scroll faster,
open faster, refresh faster.

I noticed quite the difference when I upgraded my sawtooth from the
original Rage card to a Radeon, and my games collection consists of an
old copy of Glider.

Video Driver Question.

2009-09-21 Thread Gus

How (where) are the video drivers setup and located in OS X.4.11?

I have 10.4.11 running on a desktop Beige G3 and when I did the update
a program that I use (visual hub) causes the screen to go black. That
didn't happen before I installed the updates. I was told that the
processor causes the video to crash in these beige desktop systems and
that if I restore the old video driver that was there before the
update I would be able to get it to work again.

Also, I bought this card from ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120468674399

I was told this would also alleviate my video blacking problem. But I
suspect I will have to install a driver for it as well. Any clue
where I could find such an animal? Does it come standard on the OS X
DVD? Will I have to reinstall OS X to get the driver to load? Or is
the driver already on my hard drive ready to run once I install the
card?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
