ibook G3 - GPU removal

2009-12-29 Thread Brian Arsenault
Hi everyone,

I have an iBook G3 Dual USB that has the infamous logic board
problem. I've tried reflowing the GPU a couple of times with moderate
success, but over time the problem recurs. I've given up on this
approach.

I'm considering removing the GPU altogether, but I am unsure if the
system would be bootable without it. I'd like to use it as an embedded
system to control some external hardware via USB. It would remain
headless with access being provided via SSH over ethernet.

Will I be able to boot into an OS, preferably Linux, without a
graphics adapter? Does anyone have experience with this approach?

Thanks a bunch,

Brian

Re: ibook G3 - GPU removal

2009-12-29 Thread Kris Tilford
I don't understand. If you're using it headless and accessing via SSH,
why are you worried about the GPU problem and what do you hope to gain
by removing the GPU vs. using it as is?

This topic would be better on the G-Books list rather than G3-5 list
which is normally desktop G3 thru G5 Macs.

Re: Setting up SCSI HD in B/W

2009-12-29 Thread Bruce Godfrey
I had to take a break from the SCSI hard drive problem while we had
Holiday guests, but I am back to it at least part-time now.
In answer to some previously posted suggestions -
There are no other SCSI devices in the Mac so an ID conflict should not
be possible. I did have the IDE drives on an ACARD card, which
displayed them as parallel SCSI, but it uses it's own SCSI bus. I have
removed that card and put the drives back on the MoBo bus, but this had
no effect on the SCSI hard drive problem.
I also tried booting in OS 9, installing the drivers for the ATTO card
there, and then trying to access the SCSI drive with Speedtools.
Speedtools also did not recognize that the drive was present.

The jumpers on the drive itself allow one to put it into SE mode. The
cable is LVD/SE Ultra 2 so I thought it should work without forcing the
drive into SE mode, but maybe not. Is this the next thing to try?
It seems that the problem is that the drive just isn't communicating in
any way with the controller card so I suppose the cable has to be
considered a leading suspect here. Unless the drive needs to be
configured in some way I don't understand.

another Ultra2 cable to test in the system, but this on is brand new

includes the LVD/SE terminator and 6 positions.

I had some old SCSI drives that refused to be recognized until I
booted into OS 9 and formated them with Intech Hard Disk Speedtools
3.5 for OS 9. After formatted with Speedtools, the disks were
recognized in both OS 9 and OS X. The problem was getting the drives
recognized at all, which Speedtools solved. I may have been able to
reformat with Disk Utility after using Speedtools to get the drives
 working, I can't really remember.

If the stick actually fits, then faster ram can be substituted,
generally speaking, for slower; all that happens is that the RAM does
not run as fast as it's rated.

Incompatible RAM types have different pin and slot layouts.

Yes, this is true that you can use faster RAM in all slower computer,
and generally speaking you can't use slower RAM in a faster computer,
BUT, I've seen slower labeled RAM, for example a stick labeled
PC2100 that was really a re-labeled PC3200 stick and all the chips
were the faster PC3200 chips. Evidently sometimes the manufacturers
either run out of the slower stock RAM or perhaps quit making it, and
then label the faster RAM with slower labeling. You'd have to look at
the chips to see, but it does happen sometimes.

Also, some Macs, for example the Beige or the G4 Mini only use low-
density modules with chips on both sides of the module, while others
can use either low-density or high-density, so that's another
consideration that could cause a module that fits the slot to not
function.

Also, dual-channel RAM such as used on the G5 must be mounted in
matched pairs in the correct matched slots, and are often VERY finicky
and can require reseating and rebooting many times before the matched
pair are recognized correctly. If you use two different sizes as a
pair you'll only get the smallest size (x2) IF they recognize, which
isn't likely in my experience.

why is this MDD overheating?

Ok, before I begin, here's the specs.

Dual 1.25 MDD 2gb ram, 200gb, leopard 10.5.8

couple times before and reinstalled it. Only this time, the main fan,
which I figured I'd clean too while I was at it, accidentally got put
in backwards (yes, I did that..) well, obviously it didn't take but
about 4 minutes to overheat and smell like burnt plastic and shut down

find the fan in wrong. Well, here's where it gets interesting... I
flipped the fan around, and powered it up, starts off fine, normal fan
noise (rpm) then as I watch, istat is telling me a slow increase...
it's climbing, climbing... past 150f... fan kicks up another notch ..
160f sounds like the fan is full throttle at this point... this is
with very little or no load on the CPU (itunes, mail) then I power
down, and figured I'd put a fresh application of thermal grease on the
processors. still the same problem/result? how do I get this back
down to 130f-140f where it was? what possible damage could I have done
to this poor MDD? your turn... thanks in advance. Jeff

HD Data Recovery

2009-12-29 Thread JIM RAPER
Hello,
My old G4 Sawtooth is being phased out. Been having HD problems for a while.
The HD I want to recover files and stuff from is a Maxtor 60gig 5400. I
had two HDs. The other was a 10g Maxtor 7200. I made the 10g my boot drive
and used the larger for storage. The 60 kept getting worse and worse.
Making a lot of runup noise and pings and pops. Sometimes it wouldn't mount.
I would then let it cool and could occasionally get it back onto my desktop.
I retrieved as much as I could with a little jump drive a little at a time.
Mostly music and pictures left. Bought an 8GB Lexar today to try to get the
last bits off. BUT so far today no luck in mounting the 60g. I've booting
with OS CD, tried as best I could with Disk Utility. It tells me it needs
repair; it tries to repair, then says it can't; and subsequently tells me I
need to maybe use a third party disk utility.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Jim

I have a MDD 1. Dual. I have occasionally had the fan get up and stay up. I
think I went to Apple downloads and got an update for this.
It doesn't make a lot of sense to me that the temp would climb if the fan is
working properly. If the fan is running then the temp shouldn't
rise. Under the port holes in the front is a grill that gets plugged up I
assume this is clean.
Are both CPUs running hot?

I would try Drive Genius 2 or DiskWarrior. Sometimes you can freeze a drive and
get it up long enough to get your stuff off, I've done this a lot.

If the drive in question does not contain your boot volume, then you
don't need to boot on the OS CD. Just use Disk Utility from the
booted system.

If Disk Utility cannot repair the drive, then DiskWarrior might.

BUT from the rest of your description, it sounds like that drive is
dying fast. You mention letting it cool sometimes fixed things
temporarily... So, it might be time to try putting the drive in a
sealed plastic bag and freeze it for a while.

Firewire ports stop working?

2009-12-29 Thread Hal
Anyone have the experience with their G5 where all 3 of the firewire ports (2
in back, 1 in front) all stop working?
Even with nothing connected to the firewire ports, when I go into system
profiler, I see warning: no information is available about firewire devices.

I'm running 10.5.8 on a quad G5. I had 2 external firewire 800 drives connected
and was copying files from 1 to another (about 800GB of data) when the drives
dropped off and now I get nothing. I also have an Apple cinema display
connected, and had that plugged into the rear FW400 port, to enable me to use
the ports on the display, though I haven't used them in a long time.

Any help is appreciated.

Ok, I guess all I really needed to do is shut off the G5 and unplug it for 20
minutes. That seems to have revived the ports. Is it possible to have
overpowered the firewire bus and shut it down by plugging in 2 external drives
(each with it's own AC adapter, none on bus power) and copying a few terabytes

I have a 887 dual MDD that has a good pram battery, but still will not
save settings after the computer gets unplugged. Any thoughts?

Have you tried replacing the battery anyway? Also, try resetting the
PRAM and try booting into Open Firmware (Command-Option-O-F) and typing

reset-nvram
reset-all

and pressing enter after each line. Theres one more command but i
cant remember it at the moment... .
