Hello all-
I just bought a used g 5 mac! It has Leopard os, lists as 7.3? (what's this
mean) with 2 GB Ram and dual ppcs at 2.0 Ghz. Also,2 HDDs with 250 GB each. Is
this a good machine-reliable? Any known issues besides capacitors on
motherboard? Seems reasonably fast even by today's standards, but what
improvements would be best. Has no OS disk-should I purchase Leopard or Tiger
disks. Got it cheap and love the aluminum, full tower case, but it's a beast to
lift. Please educate about this neat mac.
Previous macs:mac mini, mac book, emac, imac and adored them all!

Thanks! Love the macs!

Nice Mac. I have an early 2005 dual 2.0, which I've only just let best-beloved
have, as I bought an ex-demo 2009 MacPro - only bought as it is essential that
I run CS5.

The G5 could do with more memory, and it will run Leopard sweetly. Mine has
10.5.8 - no problems.

See it's full specs at everymac.com

The biggest bugbear (IMHO) with G5 Macs is the possibility of leakage in
liquid-cooled Macs - don't worry, yours isn't liquid-cooled.

Unless you suddenly develop an urgent need to run the latest versions of
commercial software (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite) your G5 will keep you happy for
quite some time.

Enjoy.

Nothing much, just a unique identifier Apple assigns.

I think so, I (likely) have the same machine and I'm quite happy with it
except for Flash performance on certain sites such as Hulu.

Any known issues besides
capacitors on motherboard?

I think that was a G5 iMac issue, I've not heard of it on the Power
Macs. The fans can get very loud doing certain maintenance routines or
in the case of a kernel panic and with the volume of air they move it
collects a lot of dust inside. I can't really think of anything else.

Seems reasonably fast even by today's
standards, but what improvements would be best.

I would recommend more RAM, I've maxed mine out at 8GB but you don't
have to do that. 4 GB should work well depending on what you use it for.
Just remember to install the RAM in identical pairs, no mix match
(they have to match each other, not necessarily the existing RAM).

Also you may consider a video card upgrade depending on which card you
have. But if the existing card works for your needs than don't bother.

Has no OS disk-should I

purchase Leopard or Tiger disks.

Completely up to you. I prefer Tiger for reliability but there is a lot
of software that won't run on 10.4, and Apple has stopped supporting it
which means no more security updates. Leopard has it's quirks but it is
feature rich and snark allegedly still supported by Apple./snark

Above all, enjoy your new Mac!

MDD G4 Power Supply Repair

2010-10-19 Thread James Morgan
Since the issue of MDD G4 power supply problems has been discussed
on this forum I wanted to report on my experience. I had power supply
failures in both my dual 1.25 MHz MDD G4's. Symptoms were occasional
failure to start progressing to more start failures and then to the
computer quitting while it was running. Pushing the start button on
the front resulted in a light that went out with no start.

After considering several options I decided to take the power supply
out of both computers and send them to National Ram Electronics at
Alpine New York for repair. They charge $89.00 for repair. Cost me
about $14.00 to ship the 2 power supplys and they paid the return
shipping. They have a one year replacement warranty. They also sell a
reconditioned power supply for $149.00.

I got a fast turnaround and both units are back in the G4's and
working good as new.

Used G4 power supply units go for about $100. on eBay and there is
the risk that a used one is nearing it's failure date.

I installed an extra fan in both G4's because this computer was
designed to move lots of air and, responding to complaints, Apple
came out with a firmware update that slowed the fans down. I'd
rather have a little extra noise than overheating.

Both the 400 watt and the 360 watt power supplies will work in any
MDD G4. I have one of each, they are both 24 pin, and I don't see any
difference in them.

PSUs are generally considered to be non-repairable.

The main issue is the extra-high voltage present within the housing,
about 325 volts with considerable current behind it thanks to the
(usually) two large converter filter caps.

There is a converter (simple) and one or more inverters/regulators
(complex) in a PSU.

If, as is common, the failure is in the converter, replacing the
diodes and the capacitors often cures the problem.

If, as is uncommon, the failure is in the inverter, there is no easy
way to fix these subsystems except techniques which are far beyond
even an experienced PC/Mac technician.

It is a fact that ONE Mac employed a generic PC PSU: the Beige G3
Mini-Tower, for which installation of a generic PC PSU is possible.

The DT and AIO versions of the Beige G3, however, employed a
proprietary Apple PSU.

For this purpose, the Beige G3 motherboard has a jumper block on it
which selects generic PC mode or Apple PSU mode.

If all that is faulty is the PSU's fan, then this can be replaced by
a generic fan of identical size and voltage (usually 12 volts dc).

I've had the above problem happen when the CPU needed to be re-seated
as well. Just because the MDD is doing this doesn't necessarily mean the it's
power supply related although I am glad that in your case it proved to be
true:-)

I've had several MDD's without power supply issues? so I can't confirm
failure date... what I can confirm is that dust bunnies over time can wreck
serious havoc giving shorter life to any power supply or for that matter, any
computer period.

I installed an extra fan in both G4's because this computer was
designed to move lots of air and, responding to complaints, Apple came out

Hmm, this is news to me? I was aware that they sent out new fans (power
supply main fans), but not aware of the firmware updatehmm..

An AIrport Extreme card, 4-8 GB RAM and a better video card would be
nice for Leopard. A GeForce 6200 or, better yet, a 7800 converted from
PC to Mac ROM are good options. My G5 is a DP 1.8 with 4 GB RAM and a
GeForce 7800GT, it is a great machine.

Hello Lambert,
I agree with Ted we have a late 2004 2Ghz/DP G5 Mac has been serving as
a fileserver for our lab for 2 years straight, after it gave us 4 years as a
music production unit, rarely missed a beat. Our only problem with it was
that it has PCI-X slots and some of the music components had PCI cards that
were not flexible enough to be accommodated by the PCI-X slots. Other than
that, it has been super fine. I believe the unit can take 8 Gb of RAM be
sure to buy your RAM in pairs, as the slots need to be upgraded thusly (one
RAM module for bank A and one for the lateral slot in bank B); can¹t do a
³one-at-a-time² routine like you could with the G3s and G4s.
HTH,
Dana

2G pc3200 ram for G5 Xserve?

2010-10-19 Thread SyncroBeast
Picked up an ebay G5 Xserve capable of handling 2Gbyte pc3200 RAM
(DDR400), but can't find anyone listing the 2Gbyte RAM DIMMs
specifically for the G5 Xserve. I do see server memory that is 2Gbyte
pc3200, but never listed for the G5 Xserve and sales typically don't
know what to say beyond glad to sell you 4Gbyte as 1Gbyte x 4.

I'd really like to max out at 16 Gbyte some day are the 2Gbyte
DIMMS really available/compatible with the G5 Xserve? or just a good
idea that never came to pass?
