Re: back up generator question
we live in a rural area, and power outages occasionally last for days. we have a generator for such situations, and i run all sorts of electronics on them. BUT, you absolutely MUST have a high quality UPS on any sensitive electronics, or you risk catastrophic failure. the output of that generator is NOT a clean sine wave, nor is it continuously constant voltage or frequency. a good UPS will correct this. and BECAUSE you are running a mini, which does NOT have a regulated power supply like a desktop and only has a simple rectified transformer PS, it will be particularly vulnerable. anyone who says otherwise thinks they know a lot more than they actually know. also, how do you plan to connect your computer to the generator? will you put the generator outside and run an extension cord in thru a door or window? generators are quite noisy, and an open window, even a crack, will let a lot of cold air in. if you wire it thru the main service entrance of your house, 800 W is certainly not enough to power the devices that will come on automatically, like the refrigerator, furnace, etc. when those kick on automatically, they will overload the 800 W generator and burn it out. i suggest that you go the whole 9 yards and get a minimum of 5000 W generator, and wire it thru the main service entrance, so you can also have heat and refrigeration, etc, during the power outages. but you must arrange it so that you can disconnect from the power grid while the generator is connected, otherwise when the power comes back on, it will almost certainly be out-of-phase with the generator, and cause the generator to fry. it's not that difficult to do, just add a 50 Amp dual breaker to the box and wire the output of the generator IN thru that breaker, making sure that the MAIN breaker is off, before you connect the generator. you could also spend several thousand dollars on a device that does this automatically, but if you can understand how to use a computer, you should be able to handle throwing a couple of switches in the correct sequence. then when there is a power outage and you disconnect from the grid to run your generator, simply phone the power company and request a courtesy call to let you know when the power is restored, at which time you will first disconnect the generator and then turn the MAIN breaker back on. Re: back up generator question
I believe a transfer switch is a requirement per the National Electric Code if you want to hook up a generator directly the your home mains. If anyone goes wrong you could be CRIMINALLY LIABLE, not only for causing a potential electrical fire, but to damage the power grid. I suggest you consult an electrician from this point on for help. Also, transfer switches aren't that expensive when you're talking about electrical equipment to have in a house. They can cost up to 1000 dollars, potentially more, but that's only if you have a large number of circuits to connect. http://www.apcc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=371 On Tue, Nov 2, 2010 at 09:04, ah...clem boneheads...@gmail.com wrote: we live in a rural area, and power outages occasionally last for days. we have a generator for such situations, and i run all sorts of electronics on them. OK - this drive has jumpers. As had the old one. In a iMac G5. What about jumper settings? On SATA drives the jumpers generally aren't used. The old one had a jumper. ;-) And I put it in the same spot on the new drive. Can anyone give me a definitive on this? Does using a jumper in the wrong slot shut down the whole drive? Cable looks fine. Conects well. Can one test it in one way or another? I've wondered about this, you keep saying cable when there are two cables plural for any SATA HD, one is the data cable, the other is the power cable. Is it possible you're not connecting BOTH cables? There are two cables. Fits next to each other. Both have small pegs and look the same, though one is wider than the other. Tried it. Found the small button on the keyboard. No luck. I don't think you reset the SMU using a small button on the keyboard? I did. Funky stuff flashed past on the screen. That was it. Shoud I remove the above mentioned jumpers and try again? MDD Won't Boot from OS 9.2.2
Continuing this old thread from May of 2008 I am reduced to using Google Groups for my access, so I can't reply directly to that thread, but hopefully using the same subject will thread it together. When last we left the MDD in my office, I had 9.2.2 booting (thanks again, Kris) by adding the Mac OS ROM 9.5.1 file. However, I had a problem where QuickTime 6.0.3 seemed to be hanging the computer at the desktop after the drive volumes appeared. The mouse cursor would move, but I couldn't click or select anything. Playing the divide-extensions-in-half game seemed to indicate that the problem was caused by QuickTime. Last night I was trying to get my Seagate Extreme 1.5 terabyte drive to not be dead and somehow digressed over to the 9.2.2 booting problem for the first time in a couple of years. At the desktop freeze I happened to hit cmd-opt-esc and the message I received was Force ATI Video Accelerator to quit? Aha, a clue. I put Quicktime back in, took the ATI extension named above out, and it boot up fine. However, a little more searching indicated that ATI Video Accelerator actually does something (not sure what) useful. So a little more searching and it turned out that there was a more recent version. The OS install + updates that got me to 9.2.2 had installed ATI Video Accelerator 4.8.5, but 4.8.7 appears to be the latest version. So I found the ATI OS 9 Mac Software Update from January 2005 and installed that, replacing my older components. After that I was able to boot up with both QuickTime and the ATI Video Accelerator enabled, without issues. IIRC this MDD has a Radeon 9000 installed and that may play a part as well. Perhaps the ones with an Nvidia card would not experience this problem. So that problem solved. And interestingly, all the missing/newer components (except ATI components) needed to make an MDD work seem to be present on the iMac G4/800 (the OS9 bootable one, not the later OSX only G4/800) standard installation. Next problem: No sound in 9.2.2. Adjusting the volume in the Sound CP causes the CP to visually flash and the volume goes back to zero, but no sound. After more google searching, I did a side by side comparison of the MDD extensions folder and the iMac G4/800 (iLamp) extensions folder. Teh Sound Manager was newer on the MDD, but the Apple Audio Extension was 1.x.x (1.5.1?) on the MDD and 2.x.x (IIRC) on the iMac. So I dragged everything sound related with a newer version number over to the MDD. Files I looked at included Apple Audio Extension, Sound Manager, SoundSproketLib, SoundSprocket Filter, Sound Manager, SoundSpace2Lib, and USBSoundSpace2Driver. After a reboot, I then had sound. If anyone is interested I'll try to get an extensions manager listing when I'm at home. So, the MDD seems to be pretty functional at this point with 9.2.2. I'm rather happy at solving these two issues, as this has been weighing in the back of mind for two years as one of the projects I should get to some day before the computer goes out of service, although honestly, my partner, Diane, never boots into Classic, so I'm not sure why I care that much. There are two issues left that I am aware of: 1) How do I get the %^#$%#$ DVD drive open? The keyboard function keys don't work in OS 9.2.2 and the keyboard shortcut for Eject only works if there is already a disk in the drive. 2) The Apple DVD Player software reports some kind of inability to work, but is unspecific as to the cause. I hope this helps other and thanks for any suggestions on the final two problems. Can anyone give me a definitive on this? Does using a jumper in the wrong slot shut down the whole drive? This is likely the problem. Generally speaking SATA HDs do NOT use jumpers, and further, the jumper locations between different HD makes models are often very different, so the idea of moving a jumper from an old drive to a new drive may seem like a good idea, in reality it's likely the cause of your problem here. As Alex said, EXACT model(s) of the HD(s) would be nice. In the future, the initial posting should include ALL the exact hardware involved, which would include the exact Mac model w/ RAM, HD, OS version, etc, and the replacement HD make model. Tried it. Looks like there shouldn't be any jumpers on it, the jumpers force a lower transfer speed. http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1679p_created=p_pv=2.294p_prods=227%2C294 I've never liked Western Digital's stuff, I had a round of lemons from them back in the 90s. Older controller chipsets had problems when it initially moved to SATA gen II, so some drives had the ability to force negotiation at 1.5Gbps. Re: MDD Won't Boot from OS 9.2.2

I'm rather happy at solving these two issues, as this has been weighing in the back of mind for two years as one of the projects I should get to some day before the computer goes out of service, although honestly, my partner, Diane, never boots into Classic, so I'm not sure why I care that much. I actually write code for classic Mac OS, and some days *I'm* not sure why. :-) There are two issues left that I am aware of: 1) How do I get the %^#$%#$ DVD drive open? The keyboard function keys don't work in OS 9.2.2 and the keyboard shortcut for Eject only works if there is already a disk in the drive. The Eject Strip control strip item does this. I have version 1.1 on my G4 iMac. Judging from its inconsistent icon placement on my system, it appears to require separate installation than the rest of Mac OS. It's part of Eject Extras 1.1. I don't remember exactly where it came from, but it's on the iMac system CDs somewhere. I'd guess it just lives in a folder on the CD and you have to manually copy it. Need help understanding webcam differences
Need help understanding webcam differences Picture this on your G4, the webcam local picture is just not clear - reason is 400k vs 4M pixels. A 640x480 pixel image printed at a size of 6.4 x 4.8 inches has a printing resolution of 100 PPI, just look at several public webcam sites to see which cams produce very clear, brilliant color, well lit images, but then here is my question. The kids wave to us, their hands moving rapidly in the wave, but all we see is a blur or with some cameras, the wave area pixelates, but the remainder of the pix is clear. What is the cause of this? Can the Apple tablet or phone camera appear on my G4 and will it be any better? Determined to have good webcam on my G4, but locked out by Apple application that refuses to let me use my cameras. Any ideas appreciated, JML -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Need help understanding webcam differences
Google MacCam. Download it and be sure and put the little extension file in the folder given. It will be clear what to do when you download it. This extension will let you use almost ANY webcam in any application! Here are some possible reasons the picture isn't so great: 1. The camera just isn't very good. Try and get one thats better than 20 frames per second. 2. You only have USB 1.1 on a G4 tower, unless you have upgraded it. If you haven't, you can purchase a USB 2.0 PCI card. 3. Your internet connection. Not fast enough perhaps? Hope this helps! -Jonas -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. I've always heard that the rule of thumb for a digital photo to be printed so that it looks good at normal viewing distances (held in hand) is 200 ppi (pixels per inch), so this means a 640x480 pixel image would print as a 3.2 x 2.4 photo, and with your 100 ppi you'd have some degradation from photographic quality, but it would still probably look ok. The kids wave to us, their hands moving rapidly in the wave, but all we see is a blur or with some cameras, the wave area pixelates, but the remainder of the pix is clear. What is the cause of this? This is caused by the frame rate, how often each individual image can change per second. Many older cameras can only produce 5, 10, or 15 fps (frames per second) and most video is at least 24 or 30 fps to look totally smooth. If your G4 is USB 1.1 (the standard USB for all G4 Macs), you'll need to get a USB 2.0 PCI card to get better frame rates from your USB webcams. Some USB webcams are not capable of higher frame rates, so make sure yours is capable of 24 fps if you want smooth video. If you want to stream this over the internet, you'll need a fast enough internet connection also, you won't be able to do this on dial-up or a slow connection. Can the Apple tablet or phone camera appear on my G4 and will it be any better? I don't know? I haven't heard that there's a way to activate the camera on an iPhone or iPad to be used as a webcam for another computer? It may be possible, but seems like a bad solution to me. Determined to have good webcam on my G4, but locked out by Apple application that refuses to let me use my cameras. There are solutions for this problem. What OS version and which applications? (I'm guessing 10.4.11 and iChatAV? perhaps?)
