What type of corruption?

Yes, the controller is a possibility, since there are problems on 
both drives.  But it could be quite a few other things too -- you 
haven't provided any details about your system or software.


Clean and reseat the SATA connectors.  If you have a SATA card, try it.

Check your system.log for disk or controller related errors.

MDD Can not find Boot Disk problem has been solved.
My previous platform was a 1999 G4, AGP Graphics the I purchased new.
I just purchased a MDD and move all of my disks from the AGP to the
MDD
Which was all well and good. My main BOOT Disk is a SATA disk
connected
through the ACARD, 6280M - however the disk that was the 1st default
drive
on the ATA chain was a disk that had OS 9.2.2 which worked just fine
for the
AGP but the MDD wouldn't recognize the drive therefore No Boot Disk

Thanks for all of the help that I got from John, he really knows his
stuff.

 This is true even if I have a OS X 10.5 DVD in the DVD Drive.
 It's an over kill but I also have four (4) disks in the platform, 2
 ea. IDE and 2 ea. SATA. The SATA drives are connected through a ACARD,
 6280M which appears to the system as a SCSI interface.

 All of the disks have a good system folder and can be use to boot the
 MDD.
 There are three (3) disk with OS X 10.5.X, one (1) disk with OS X
 10.3.X and one (1) disk with OS 9.2.X.

 Yes, if I remove all of the disks except one, the IDE (OS X 10.5.X)
 which is located in the first disk position, the position where apple
 puts the first disk when they sell you the platform the problem still
 occurs.

 When this problem occurs (my own doing) the only way out that I've
 found to correct this situation  is to do a force shut-down, i.e. hold
 down the power button until the system shuts down.

 Upon re-powering the platform if I don't hold the C key, telling the
 Boot ROM that I want to boot from the DVD I'm right back into the trap
 of no Boot Disk found.

 However holding down the C key the MDD will boot into the OS X 10.5
 DVD Commercial Version at which time I can go the Select Startup
 Disk and restart into any of my disk,

 ABAIK the Boot ROM Version 4.4.8f2 is the latest version for this
 platform, however it might have problems, so if anyone has knowledge
 of how to redo the Boot ROM I'm willing to give it a try.

 I have a disk with OS 9.2 installed so I could boot from that disk and
 redo Boot ROM update, but I'm thinking that the install program will
 see Version 4.4.8f2 and refuse to install.

 Also if anyone knows the direct link to Apple to get the Boot ROM
 please give it to me.

G3 Beige Tower Questions

Greetings:

I found this group via LEM, naturally.  I was looking up specs on my
newly acquired G3 Beige Tower.  I am actually writing to find out if I
can replace the SCSI (9 GB) Drive with a nice ATA adapter (and which
one I need) so I can put at least an 80 GB drive into the box.  The
current setup includes a SCSI adapter (Adaptec) which runs the system
drive and looks to be Factory installed, it had a sticker on the
external connector that basically was don't use this.

I have put in a Firewire/USB card I had and that works fine.  But I am
not sure if my ATA 100 or ATA 66 promise card will work in this unit
and wanted to know what EIDE controller I would want for this unit.
It reports itself as being a 333 mhz G3.

I am currently running os 9.1 on her and trying to put her back into
service as my main box.  I am thinking of running the classic mozilla
browser that is available to give me modern Browsing... but I am also
in need of some software and hoped I could gain some leads.

So the question above is question 1.

Q2:  Does anyone know of or have an old copy of ACDSee for Mac?  I can
not seem to find it, or I would accept another picture viewer app, but
I think I am leaning towards ACDSee.  I am not sure if any software of
this vintage was able to support PNG at all though?  Mostly JPEG
anyhow, but, need a good veiwer.

Q3:  Need to find a floppy drive bezel for this machine.  Saved it
from a local recycler and it was missing that bezel, but otherwise
looks great and works great.

Just as well, seeking all kinds of old software, so if someone has
some they would like to part with, let me know.  I am hopeful that I
can get this machine up and running in great shape and even though it
is old, I like classic A-LOT better than OS X, so I guess I am as
vintage as they come :-)

You can ignore this sticker; it does work, but you can have tricksy issues with 
terminations and id's then. Basically you end up with a termination in the 
middle of the chain, which works...for some devices. If you add things to this 
SCSI chain, you'll probably want to unset the TERM (and and maybe the TERM 
Power) jumper on the optical drive, and manage termination yourself.

However, the Beige G3's already have an ATA drive. IIRC ones sold as servers 
came with SCSI drives, but there is an ATA (66 IIRC) port on the mobo as well. 
If there's no ATA connector you may actually have an old 604 powermac not a G3.

As for add-on ATA cards, so long as they have Mac ROMS they should work.

I was able to repair one drive and did a clean install of 10.5.  It
seems all my trouble starts with screwed up updates.  Our satalite ISP
seems to mess up and the Apple server is horribly slow.  The other
drive is not seeming to repair.  The one I am booting from now is my
backup.  I guess next I should re-format my main drive.

For updates, then, do NOT use Software Update; go to Apple's web site and 
download them individually.

Failed updates, though, will mess up the OS, NOT the underlying drive 
formatting or directory structure. If you're finding 'disk corruption' that's 
recurring, it's quite possibly a sign of impending drive failure...I've seen 
that a number of times.

Also if these drives are as old as the Mac...well, they're getting old, failing 
so near each other could be sheer coincidence.

 What would be the best wireless card for a G4 gigabit. It is running
 OS10.5.8 and needs to use an HP 4500 wireless printer.

The best is one which utilizes a Broadcom chip set and is recognized as an
Airport Extreme card. This would be a PCI card. However, most
manufacturers have moved on to USB 2.0 dongles or Ralink-based PCI cards.

A USB 2.0 dongle is usable in a G4 Gigabit, but it would operate at the
USB 1.1 rate.

ZyDAS 1211B-based dongles are good, but there are others which also offer
MacOS X-compatible drivers.

A very economical alternative is a Mini PCI card for a Dell Laptop in a
Mini PCI-to-PCI adapter.

You would find these on eBay at very low cost.

I have these Dell Mini PCI cards and adapters in almost all of my
Hackintoshes.

MacOS X recognizes these as shown below:
