.mac email

2012-09-02 Thread oneoftheharts
I posted a question earlier this year regarding the inability for Mail to
work with the email accounts of those with .mac accounts and the inability
to log in to web-based mail via .mac. I chugged along using my iPhone but
a few months later wandered in to the Apple store for the umpteenth time
with a very forlorn look on my face over the fact that my email system had
gone away forever. One of the employees (one that had been promoted past
greeter but not quite yet to genius) had pity on me and really tried to
help. He tried every combination of keystrokes and looked all over Apple's
site. Then the light bulb over his head came on and he said, Wait a
minute... He went to iCloud.com and voila! there it was!!! I was able to
access my email from my computer. There's always the initial prompt
reminding me that I am accessing this with an unsupported browser but the
ignore option directs you to the screen from .mac. Yay!

So, having never really preferred web-based email, now that I can access my
email AT ALL from my Mac, is it possible to treat it as a POP account and
resume using Mail? My OS is 10.4.11.

Thanks so much,
Claire

Not as POP, but it is available as an IMAP account as follows:

http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudmail.html

These instructions are for Leopard and Snow Leopard, but since it's for setting
up iCloud as a straight IMAP mail account it should work in any version of OS X.

I don't have any 10.4 systems to test it on, though.

Disappearing file

2012-09-02 Thread geraldcornish

Hi all

Powerbook Pismo (400MHz G3, 10.4.11 Tiger, 1GB memory)

I have downloaded lubunto.iso file and am following the instructions
on this site http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-
on-mac-osx to create a ubuntu flash drive (4GB) but am getting
stopped on the following command -

hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o /Users/ged/InBox/lubuntu-12.04-
desktop-powerpc.img /Users/ged/InBox/lubuntu-12.04-desktop-powerpc.iso

I get the same result if I specify .dmg as the output file.

My problem is that the file exists while hdiutil is working - I can
see it in Finder right above the iso file but it just disappears when
hdiutil ends.

Am I getting something wrong, or is the Pismo too old for version 12,
or what?

TIA

What does Console say when this happens? If hdiutil is throwing an error and
giving up, it may be noted there instead of in Terminal. That would account for
the files appearing and then disappearing.

Also do 'man hdiutil' in a terminal window and confirm that all the parameters
are correct...they look right, but you can't discount subtle changes in
commands between OS X versions.

I am using it on 10.4.11 and downloading via Mail (v2.1.3(753.1)) on
an MDD.

Re: Where can I find a good explanation on using Migration Assistant?

2012-09-02 Thread smac0031

I used migration assistant to transfer an account to my G5. It seems to
have succeeded except that it won't accept the password and allow me to log
in.

Any suggestions?

boot from a system installer disc, and change the password via the change
password command in the installer menu.
