Welcome!

Feels nice to see new members, who still own PowerPC Macs, joining! My
PowerMac G4 MDD Dual is now through about 1000 hours of computing
(mathematical sequences mostly) and is still looking strong!

Hy!

Check this link (themacelite): themacelite.wikidot.com/compatibility
As you can see, for more than 75% of graphic cards, pins 3 and 11 need to be
altered. Your computer can go up to Radeon x800 and GeForce 7800, as you
mentioned.

Good luck,

Support for the Blue Box environment (alas, classic mode in OS X) was

What about having the old Mac Mini and the new one at the same time?

Hy!

Here is the link to the Xserve G5 developer note:
http://developer.apple.com/legacy/mac/library/documentation/Hardware/Developer_Notes/Servers/XserveG5/XserveG5.pdf
.

I still do not know whether it is possible to install second-cpu, perhaps
others can tell you more? Do you have a secondary cpu slot?
Anyway, in the note it states: Warning: DON’T TRY TO USE OLDER PROCESSOR
CARDS! This connector differs from those in earlier
computers and it is not pin-compatible.

As for the memory upgrade, the maximum for this computer is 8GB (184-pin,
unbuffered, ECC DDR400 SDRAM DIMMs, unbuffered,
8-byte, with parity, PC3200 compliant).

Re: Apple_ARM ?

2011-05-07 Thread Matevž Markovič
Wow!

If Apple goes to ARM on laptops, wouldn't that be like going back to the
PowerPC. I know that the times are different today and that ARM is way
better off than PowerPC was in 2005 as far as Apple is concerned, but still,
what would the performance of say future equivalent of MacBook pro be?
And what will they stick into MacPros and iMacs? Is there a ARM chip in the
roadmap that can match current Xeon generation? Is there even a ARM chip
that can match PowerPC 970gx?

I just hope that Apple knows what they are doing, and that they are not
going to abandon their technical and academic community in favor of normal
users, who just use Apple products out of fashion or because they don't like
Windows.

Think again, Apple!

Re: Apple_ARM ?

2011-05-07 Thread Matevž Markovič
So Apple will just stick to intel on high-performance models, while using
ARM for everything else? That seems too optimistic to be true... that would
mean that Apple would have to develop 2 parallel versions of OS X at the
same time, one for ARM and other for Intel. This actually is nothing new,
Apple is messing with multiple different architectures at the same time for
the last 20 years (if not more), so they have vast experiences in that
field.

Anyway, I would love to see old-new PowerPCs in modern macs, but that is not
going to happen, I am afraid... As it was said, IBM is past 7th generation,
but Power architecture is meant for high-performance computing, not for
laptops and iMacs. Apple has actually the ability to build high-performance
PowerPCs (from PASemi), but I do not think that they are going to use this.

Btw. I thought that SSE3 has everything that Altivec offers. Can you explain
a little bit more, please?

Re: Apple_ARM ?

2011-05-07 Thread Matevž Markovič
About your bet, Dan, what do you think will happen to the Mac Pro line? At
the time I see no alternative to Xeon Nehalems. The reason I am concerned
about this is because I use computers also to compute number sequences and
there you need all the power you can get. And more cores mean more intervals
at the same time, where current 12-core Mac Pro is clearly the winner.

Well, current gen. Mac Pro is still somehow out of reach for me :) I can
theorise about such computers but in real life I use my humble PowerMac G4
MDD Dual 1.25, which is, if you ask me, one of the best computers of all
times (next to PowerBook G3) :D

Re: MDD problem

2011-02-10 Thread Matevž Markovič
Hy!

I feel sorry for your case. I know how it feels, when your beloved computer
seems dead. As John pointed out, CUDA is one of your last hopes.

This guy here http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=135390 had a
problem with his memory - he inserted the memory backwards, thus he fried
the DIMM, but still they said that there is a hope in CUDA. If there was
hope in his case, why should be no hope in yours?

Besides, some 4 years ago, my Powerbook G3 went silent - the card holding
the power connector and rerouting power to the logic board was damaged. I
can still remember the scene - we, I and my friend, were trying to wake my
PB G3 from the dead by soldering the power card. As you know, when an old
powerbook boots, there is a long pause between the power-up and the chime,
and one of the few ways of knowing whether your computer actually started
was the presence of light on the keyboard or by measuring the electrical
parameters from the power card itself, by hand.
When we were about to give up, it finally booted. I cannot express my
feelings, that I felt at that time, after hours of hard work and trying.

Today, after 3 years, this Powerbook still runs. Therefore, there is some
hope for your powermac G4, so do not feel sad and do not give up to early!

With best wishes,
Matevž

Powermac G4 mdd dual Strange noise???

2011-02-08 Thread Matevž Markovič
Hy to everyone!

Since I bought my Powermac G4 Dual 1.25 MDD, I can hear from time to time
this very strange sound, believe it or not, like a bee. This sound has quite
a high frequency, and it just stars for no obvious reason, lasting for about
1 second and ending with this sound, which you can hear the very moment when
you press the power button to boot the computer. I think that it has
something to do with the hard drive.

Perhaps this is just hard drive spinning up, and I would really like to
believe it. I am just buying another 1GB of RAM and I do not want for the
computer to crash or the hard drive to die. Apart from that, there are no
other problems, except this crash some days ago, which happened during
night, because of a unresolved kernel trap (I think it was 0x30 or something
like that).

Please help!

something wrong with the PSU. Should I reset PMU? If so, with what command
in the open firmware?

worry, because sometimes I leave the computer on when I leave home (it does

Learning PowerPC assembly on a PowerMac G4

I have a PowerMac G4 and I want to use it to learn PowerPC assembly. How do

I know one or two things about assembly in general (ok, maybe more :) ), but

I have a PowerPC reference manual, list of assembly languages, almost
everything I need to learn from. Now I need to know how to approach this
practically: which assembler, how to use, ...
I have OS X 10.4 tiger, Xcode is 2.x .

Thank you for your help!

Re: Quicksilver loses keyboard input

2010-09-24 Thread Matevž Markovič
Hello!

I would recomend to look at the open-firmware(reset nvram, reset-all). But
since you have no option of inputing text into the console (perhaps it would
work with a bluetooth keyboard), try resseting the PMU the hard way (via
battery on the logic board).
The reason why I think that firmware is causing problems is that other
devices (such as mice) are working in the same USB slots). Perhaps part of
the firmware got corrupt. Anyway, try pulling the battery out of the logic
board (look for the instructions on the Apple web site).

I hope that will help.

Re: Essential utilities for G4 powermac

2010-08-27 Thread Matevž Markovič
I think that there is a script that gets executed prior booting into the
Forth shell (it was mentioned in the Mac OS X Internals (Amit S.). He stated
that this script can render your computer unbootable, therefore it must be
saved into NVRAM.

I am sure that there is a way to save changes (like modified aliases) into
NVRAM. In OS X, they are saved only if you shut down cleanly, and that is
managed by IOKIT. Here we are speaking of firmware and I think that making
your firmware implementation unchangeable for the end user after providing
him with a shell is rather useless, dont you think?

I think that sync writes changes to the NVRAM prior to reboot.

Anyway, check this page
http://osxbook.com/book/bonus/ancient/whatismacosx/arch_boot.html.

I hope that I have been of some help (is that better ? :) )

http://www.firmworks.com/QuickRef.html

Here you can see all open firmware commands (remember, that is forth
environment, therefore you can define your own commands from the existing
ones).

I found that I was wrong about sync - it writes to the hard disk.
The script I mentioned is NVRAMRC.

Here is an example of running the editor to modify the script. Remember, it
gets executed prior you have a chance to act, therefore, double-check
everything.

ok nvedit
(use editor commands)
^C (control-C to finish)
Store script to NVRAM [y/n]? y
Enable script [y/n]? y
ok

Have a nice day,

Re: Downclock Powermac G4 mdd

Thank you for your answers! Well, as far as hardware way is concerned, I
will not take that route. I would risk too much. The fan was already
replaced when I bought
the computer - silenter and more powerful, that is what the one I bought it
from told me, but still too loud in my opinion. Also altering the pin
configuration is not something I am prepared to do.

I will consider once again putting one cpu down and enabling nap mode...
Thank you for your answers.

With regards,

Re: Essential utilities for G4 powermac

2010-08-25 Thread Matevž Markovič
I would highly recommend Applejack. But I think it can only be installed on
the boot drive. Also ClamXav would not hurt - we live in dark times, and is
getting darker, even for macs :)

Try searching sourceforge.net. And for the last resort, learn using
OpenFirmware. It is very powerful and also extensible. The same goes for the
Intel Macs - install rEFIt, along with the EFI shell, and learn how to use
EFI shell as well.
Try to find utilities which can be invoked from the OpenFirmware. Myself, I
have never done that, but I am sure that it can be done and that such
utilities exist.

As for the pure troubleshooting utilities, I would recommend Apple Hardware
Test, or some other LiveCD which has those utilities preinstalled. Depending
solely on your hdd and utilities on it can be dangerous.

I hope I have been of little help.

Downclock Powermac G4 mdd

2010-08-24 Thread Matevž Markovič
Hello!

I have a Powermac G4 dual (1.25 ghz), running under OS X Tiger.
I use this computer as a test server with low traffic. Because no
performance-demanding tasks are running on it, I want to decrease
the temperature of both cpus and thus also reduce the noise of the fan, as
it is way too high. (and the power consumption)

I have heard of CHUD 3.5.2 and its option of enabling nap mode, but I am not
willing to risk crashing the machine, because I have read that enabling nap
on both cores will probably crash the computer and it also has other
side-effects.

Is it possible to manually reduce the speed of both cpus? (probably from
Open Firmware). I would rather go with 2 x 1.0 Ghz (250mhz less per cpu).
And if it is, how dangerous is that?

Thank you for your answers!
