Fool'em
Wayback machine, I know I did this in the past, but I can't remember how. I want to set up children's programs that ordinarily require that the cd be in the cd player for the program to run to be able to run from a copy somewhere on the HD. It saves the wear, tear, and breakage (inevitable) that five year olds inflict on cd players. OS 9.1, Imac Bondi. THe program in question installs on the HD, but requires the cd be in the drive to run. Further complicated in that the cd mounts as two volumes, one being the program, the other an audio cd. I don't know where or ecactly the method for copying the cd to the drive in such a way that the install program finds it instead of requesting the cd be inserted into the cd player. -- All the best, R.A. Bondi iMac
Well, now I've gone and done it. I'm trying to fix up a Bondi iMac for a neighbor kid, and it worked just fine till I fixed it. I could not remember to password I had for the admin account, so I just hit it in the head with HD SPeed Tools, thinking that I would then load up a new install of 9.1. Well, now it will not mount any OS from a CD. I've tried the HDST disk again, a generic 9.1 disk, Disk Warrior, and an Apple Hardware test disk. the only one that made any progress was the AHT disk, which started to load, but hung at This Machine Does not support AHT. If I boot and zap p-ram, I get to the Happy Face wanting an OS, but then it will not pick up any of the CD boot volumes and goes from there to an image of a floppy flashing the ?. Any light out there? -- All the best, R.A. Try this (This is not recommended practice and could possibly harm your controller or drive!), it worked once for me: uplug the cables from the hard disk and try booting again. If you succeed, WITHOUT RESTARTING, plug in the cables (signal first, then power) for the HD and see if your favorite disk utility can access it. -- All the best, R.A. Re: Panther upgrade?
I did the exact upgrade yesterday on an eMac. It was running 10.2.8 and the owner wanted to run some HP printer software that required at least 10.3.8. I upgraded the machine with some 10.3.2 install disks, and the updated to 10.3.9 from the Apple website. It took a while, and I forgot to not let the upgrade do the kitchen sink full of foreign language support, but all seems well.
