Network G5 to Macbook Pro to share superdrive

2013-08-15 Thread arichic...@gmail.com
I need to upgrade a macbook pro to 10.6, but the internal dvd won't
work. My G5 has a working dvd drive, but, of course, the 10.6 drive
won't run any intel installer for me.

I am under the impression that it is possible to network the G5 and
the MBP such that they can share the G5's dvd drive, and yet load the
10.6 installer---as if the G5 was an external dvd. So, very simply,
how do I do this, step by step? I only have an ethernet cable and a
USB cable.

Google Reader going away, now what?

2013-03-14 Thread arichic...@gmail.com
http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9237592/Google_Reader_several_other_services_axed

Google Reader is probably my most used web app of all. Why would they do this?
And what to do now with a PPC/Leopard setup? I don't really like
NetNewsWire for a variety of reasons. I don't like the little ads, I
do not like how it takes me to a webpage for a blog rather than
presenting the content within itself. On Aurora, Google Reader blocks
ads and many other good things to keep it low-end.

Also count me among those opposed to Wordpress esp without a good rss
reader! Why can't the Wordpress content automatically be forwarded to
extant email lists?

Sudden problems with AuroraFox on Leopard G5

2013-01-18 Thread arichic...@gmail.com
Past few days I've tried to use AuroraFox 16 and its been beachballing
incessantly and then provoking a spindump---which I've managed to
disable. I thought it was simply time to upgrade, but, AuroraFox 17
and 20 are doing the same thing. I added no new addons, and no other
browser is giving me trouble, not even SeaMonkey with the same addons.
Anyone else having trouble? I wanted to stay on the latest AuroraFox
version which would let me easily use Flash {which is what, 17?]

Leopard WebKit and Flash

2012-11-27 Thread arichic...@gmail.com
I was experimenting with Leopard WebKit and it disabled and hid Flash
from all Webkit browsers---but not from Aurora or Camino. I am using
the common hacked Flash that reports as 11.1 that has been much
discussed here. Question is: how do I reverse that if I want to use
Safari or something with Flash? Dual 1.8 G5 running 10.5.8.

Also, really more of a notice, but, every time I launch TenFourFox, it
changes some of my about:config files in Aurora concerning out of date
Flash notice reporting and so forth. How is that possible, and how to
make it stop? I'd like to use TenFourFox as my secondary browser.

G5 fans racing

2012-08-11 Thread arichic...@gmail.com
Dual 1.8 G5. When I put it to sleep, sometimes, not every time, I come
home and the fans are racing and it sounds like a 747 taking off. I
already reduced speed in the system prefs. Before I reduced, the fans
would come on once or twice an hour, but never loud racing. Since I
reduced, the fans /never/ come on except in sleep mode.

I would think in sleep mode /less/ power and heat would be generated.
Anyone have a theory on this? I installed a temp monitor utility, and
it tells me the processors are running about 105 degrees F; the memory
controller heatsink at about 118 F.

Re: [G3-5]Re: G5 up and running, what about browsers?

2012-07-31 Thread arichic...@gmail.com
This thread has actually returned in its own way to the topic of
browsers---in a general sense---and how to stay on the low-end as
sites like Google demand more and more computer resources.

For example, when I was limited to using my G3 iBook, and my G4 stock
Digital Audio, I often took refuge in the Elinks text browser:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ELinks

It runs in the Terminal and reminds of my original internet experience
of modeming in to my University Vax account, running Gopher. It is
*especially* well suited to Google Groups as it eliminates all
formatting other than ASCII text. It can also be used for Gmail and
Yahoo mail. When I begin to detest how much WWW has become like TV, I
use ELinks.

As for Facebook, there is a Firefox addon called Facebook Purity which
reverses some of the more egregious nonsense---as far as the
formatting is concerned.

Right now I am responding to this Google Groups thread through the
Basic HTML version of Gmail---which, by the way, selects for you if
quoted text appears above or below your reply. There is even a more
barebones version of Gmail, the mobile version you can run in your
browser. I don't think I will be posting through the Groups interface
on principle.

G5 up and running, what about browsers?

2012-07-22 Thread arichic...@gmail.com
Finally got my Dual 1.8 G5 online with an Airlink 101 Wireless N mini
USB Adapter [as suggested on this list], and it is surfing fine.
Couple issues. My Apple Studio flat screen display is only 1024 x 780.
I was using it with an old G4 and Opera 10.10, specifically for one
feature: the fit to width button.

Opera 10.63 seems unstable on the G5 running Leopard, and Opera 10.10
looks outdated. What was the last stable, reliable version of Opera
for PPC? Aurora is fast and stable, but, I am missing a third of every
webpage, having to constantly scroll over. Is there anyway to get
Aurora/Firefox to fit to screen width?

Compared to my G4 I am not having too much trouble playing video right
off the websites. I think my Flash is outdated because I can play
Youtube and Hulu with no difficulty. It was mentioned here though that
there is a way of always getting Quicktime to play video: what is that
utility again?

G5 and ADC

2012-05-02 Thread arichic...@gmail.com
I am finding some confusing, conflicting information online so I just
want a clear definitive answer: I thought all G5's supported and had
an ADC port. I currently have an older Apple Studio Display I really
like, using it with a G4 DA. If I upgrade to a G5, I want to use this
same monitor. So which G5's DON'T SUPPORT ADC? Given that I want a G5
with ADC, which would be the best one to get? Reliability would be the
top priority, then lower power consumption.

While I am posting, let me also ask if the G4 MDD all support ADC. Did
any MDD come with USB 2?

G4 DA won't boot into 9.1

2012-03-03 Thread arichic...@gmail.com
Ok, so, is there some minimum OS 9 requirement for a G4 DA to boot
into 9? Here is what occured. I found an old hard drive of mine that
had 9.1 on it, and I installed it in the G4. Upon restart, the hard
drive was visible in the Finder; in fact, 2 drives appeared--- I think
i must have made a small emergency boot partition on this drives years
ago [2004 is when I last used it].

Now, first question. Was I supposed to press some sort of reset button
or cuda switch when I installed the drive? Is it too late? I see 2
small buttons on the front of the mac under the power button.

2nd question. The Panther install this mac has did not seem to have
any OS 9 on it whatsoever. I had copied a 9 i had on an iBook, but, it
gave error messages launching classic so I gave up on it. So tonite, I
renamed that 9 to previous system folder, then copied the system
folder from my old hard drive to my boot drive. It launched Classic
but did not want to launch Classilla--said could not find 'find by
content' and other missing components. I REALIZED that 7 years ago, I
had turned off a lot of extensions; so I had to turn all on in the
Classic preferences. Ok, so now, Classic is running fine, but, still
no botting into 9 even when I set the System Preferences to boot into
9 from the correct folder.

Re: G5 and Airport Extreme

2012-02-10 Thread arichic...@gmail.com
So it looks like I might bite the bullet and buy this particular G5
just so I can run Leopard and sync with the recently acquired 2nd gen
ipod touch. It sure would save time on the various workarounds
proposed here for my G4. Local seller wants $100; inside is 1 gig of
ram and a nice 500 gb hard drive [is that a decent deal?].

 http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g5/stats/powermac_g5_1.8_dp.html

Now, what it does NOT have is an Airport Extreme card installed.
Ok, so another mac has entered the picture, a MDD at the same price
[$100] with these specs:

G4 dual 1.25GHz processors
2GB PC2700 DDR RAM from Crucial
80GB IDE hard drive
Pioneer DVD-R drive
Zip 750MB removable drive
NVIDIA GeForce Titanium 4600 128MB graphics card
Airport Extreme wireless card [pci card running at extreme speed]
i believe a usb 2 card will be tossed in the deal

So which is the better deal? G5 has half the memory, and i am
concerned about the reliability of G5's, and the electrical usage.
Whatever I buy needs to last a while. However, it has a huge 500 gig
hard drive, and will come with the Leopard disks I need to sync the
ipod touch. But, it does NOT have an airport card at all, i MIGHT be
able to dig one out of my dead ibook, but the install on the G5
doesn't look that easy. The MDD will only lack the Leopard install,
but acquring that disk might also cost as much and eb as much trouble
as installing airport on the G5.

So, G4 or G5? Mainly using this to manage itunes collection, get fast
web performance, and manage my thousands of text documents while
trying to stay ahead of Apple and tis wicked upgrade reaper.

G4 and ipod touch, gen 2

2012-02-06 Thread arichic...@gmail.com
I recently received an ipod touch, gen 2. I never messed around with
one before and was surprised to discover it requires itunes 10 to do
anything with my macs---the most advanced being my s/o's macbook pro
that runs tiger. I'd prefer to charge and load it on my G4. So I am
wondering what my options are here or a workaround. I'd at least want
to add some of my music to its 8 gigs. Could i upload music like to a
dropbox and ahve the ipod see and download it? Is there some downgrade
of iOS? Does it absolutely require usb2 to charge?

Re: G4 recovery

2012-01-31 Thread arichic...@gmail.com
The files that I did move over, came over read-only. About 30 folders,
thousands of files. I can change permissions individually, manually
via Get Info, but is there a way to change them all with a fewer set
of commands, even through Terminal?

The DA was able to see the DVD drive on the imac even through the
ethernet cable. However, when I tried to run the installer, it said
can't install this software on this computer.

If I remove the hard drive from the imac and plant it in the DA, I'd
assume there would be no ownership issues or problems accessing the
files, correct? Seems immensely difficult to get to that hard drive,
though. I am trying to work with these older macs spending as little
as possible on upgrades and so forth, so I'd prefer to just get Tiger
on the DA without sourcing a one use only dvd drive.

G4 recovery

2012-01-30 Thread arichic...@gmail.com
Some of you may recall, i had a few macs crash on me all at once. My
iMac G4 lost video for some reason. Anyway, I hooked up the iMac G4 to
my G4 DA through an ethernet crossover cable for 2 reasons:

1. I'd like to try to recover as much data off the imac as I can
2. I'd like to upgrade the DA to Tiger. The DA only has a cd drive
while the imac has dvd, so i'd like to do a network upgrade

Right now, for some reason, the setup is letting me copy files from
the imac to the DA but, not from certain directories in the home
folder such as musci, movies, pictures. Other stuff, even folders I
created in the home directory, iI can move. Why is that? What is my
easiest workaround? I of course have passwords to both machines,
panther and tiger disks. How would I get control of the imac? I can
launch its system prefs but it immediately closes.

of Steve Jobs, I have been trying to get by the past few months on a
G4 466, entirely stock, original 30gig hard drive with only Panther on
it, no dvd drive to even install Tiger. i have sort of collected
numerous questions to strategize on how to maximize this current
situation, which I will now present:

1. I have had chances to grab various G5's for between $100 and $150.
I have been hesitant because I have ehard they use so much power. Do
they really use that much more power than a G4? How much more? My
other hesitation, and my biggest overall frustration is once again the
OS/browser limitations for PPC. At this point, I am using Opera 10.10
with javascript always off just to be able to get decent surfing
speeds. I like Opera because of the ability to toggle the fit to width
of webpages on my Apple Studio Display. It is such a nice monitor, I
do not want to really upgrade to a mac that won;t be able to use it
without an espensive adapter. Would a G5 running Tiger really be worth
the investment and supposed energy cost? I would not want to pay an
extra $250 a year, over the G4 power price.

2. I've tried to locate a processor upgrade for this DA. Would a
processor out of a MDD work? I really can't see paying more than $25
for an upgrade, though, maybe someone could point me to a really
great, easy to install upgrade card. How hard is it to just swap the
motherboard out with a latter G4. like a MDD? By the way, what exactly
does the Digital Audio do in this machine that isnt done in other
G4's? I am running my old Apple Pro speakers from my dead iMac and the
sound is just the same.

3. For software I am stuck in Panther, unless and until I can get my
Tiger hard drive inside there, which is stuck inside the dead G4
imac.. By the way, I can figure out how to install another hard drive
on the same ribbon, but supposedly one can install more than 2 hard
drives---but where are the other ribbons and cables supposed to be? I
see I can upgrade quicktime to 7.5, but, wasn't there some reason to
stick with 6 instead?

4. My s/o has a macbook pro with an Intel Tiger install disk. Could
this be used to install on a hacintosh, like 10.6? Should I just give
upgrading the G4 and go hacintosh or Ubuntu on some pc? I could
probably find a useable donor pc laptop for the $150 a G5 would cost
me.
