Re: Emac issues and OSX 10.5.8 and Airport Extreme Card

2011-03-17 Thread bryan adkins
I would delete any networks/locations under network preferences and create a
new location reboot and that should have you set. Having to reset date and
time I would hit the go drop down menu in finder and click go to folder
should bring up a text box and type private/etc/ this will bring up a
bunch of folders. Locate the folder localtime move it to the trash and
delete your trash contents then open time and date preferences and select
your local time reboot and you should be set up. As the other post mentions
this is most likely a dead PRAM battery but try these they might work for
you. I have to do the time and date dealio before and many other problems
from OSX to linux distros (still much less then winblows:) and I will tell
you GOOGLE is you BEST FRIEND! wish you the best.

This is a dead PRAM battery. Get a new one and report back if your problems
 aren't solved.

Re: Changing the breathing rate of a sleeping Power Mac G4

2011-01-29 Thread bryan adkins
I have tried this myself a few times trying to mess with kernel extensions
to no avail I know there was a linux kernel that would allow you to use
the sleep indicator light to show HDD activity, there might be some info on
it don't know though. I also read awhile back that there is a key in
Info.plist named intensity so that might be what we are looking for. If
anyone has any ideas I am more then willing to test out and try on my PB G4
but from all I have looked into it hasn't been done. I am relatively new to
all the coding mumbo jumbo but like I said I messed around with kernel
extensions and couldn't work it out specifically If I can find that linux
kernel maybe someone can offer some help or at least point me to a better
forum to help out on that.

 - but not useless - feature to non-Mac people

My first Mac was a Graphite iMac 600 MHz, the first time I saw it
'breathe' while sleeping I was in love with it. I wish that I still had that
adorable little Mac so I could give it a hug.

Silly and OT I know, but what can I say?

Actually it was my Powerbook 5300 where I first noticed that they breathe
while sleeping. My first 3 Macs (Performa 475, PPC 7200/120 and Beige
Gossamer (born a G3/266, later enhanced to G3/400) didn't do it that I ever
saw, but I've seen my 5300 and Lombard Powerbooks, and G4 Quicksilver 867
all doing it. I don't know if my G4 Mini does it, though, since its power-on
indicator is facing the wall side of the hutch on my computer desk so I
can get at the free USB port easilyh lemme see, maybe if I'm
careful enough I can turn it around without loosening the AC adapter
cordahhh. YES, it DOES! LOL Maybe it's a New World Mac thing?

Oh and while I TOTALLY agree with both Sean and Tina on how cool (and
endearing) Macs are when breathing while sleeping, gotta say the one thing I
personally NEVER liked about ANY Mac design was where they put ports and
outlets. As far as I'm concerned, this aspect of the physical design could
have been done precisely to make things harder. I know, I know, it's not
aesthetic to have to see the nest so that's why they did them this way,
but most of the time, I can only appreciate aesthetics when they ADD to the
FUNCTIONALITY (like the breathing which assures me that my Macs are OK and
sleeping), not DETRACT from it! To wit:

For me, it's a major PITA to have to turn the whole damn computer (tower or
big desktop box) around so as to be able to see/get at the ports and
plug-ins to change a plug-in/make sure it's seated properly or try to
remember how/where you plugged something in if you're tracing lines from
the power strip. And why couldn't the Mini have its power-on light by the
power switch and the optical drive on the right or left side of the panel
with the power switch/pug-in/ports? Translation: why did they have to force
me to choose between being able to see the power light and be able to easily
access the optical drive at the expense of being able to easily power on,
PRAM Zap or plug in flash drives, speakers or headphones? And who was the
freakin' idiot who couldn't put ALL the commonly used stuff (USB ports and
AC-adapter plug-in) on the RIGHT side of the iBook? (or all on the left) --
USB ports on opposite sides of the AC-adapter gets me hopelessly tangled up
when I need to use the mouse while the machine needs to drink wall juice.

 Ooops...Sorry... :-{

Re: iTunes and iPod 4 Touch registration

2010-12-25 Thread bryan adkins
If they have a PC around just take care of it that way as far as itunes 10
its a no go on a 867ghz quicky, its funny I can run 10.1 itunes on a 10
year old IBM thinkpad but try and do it on a older (less then ten years old)
powermac or ibook and its a no go? no go on the 7.3 either srry for the
apple woes!

 Hi All -

I recently turned over a Quicksilver 867 running 10.4.11, all updates
installed, to my step daughter She has purchased an iPod 4 Touch and is
trying to get the registration completed. While following registration
instructions the system is telling her she needs iTunes 10.1 which I gather
doesn't work in Tiger (She can't complete the registration). Is there a way
around this ? I don't suppose she could install the latest iTunes version in
 10.4.11 (I think we're talking v7.3) ?

Since I don't have a clue on most of the high tech stuff out there, I
would appreciate some advice or info that will get her down the road...

 Thanks,

 Jim McGee (aka: mudbro)

While I haven't tried it on 10.4, the description on the iTunes page
seems to indicate that 10.1.1 (the current version) does work with 10.4 or
later on g4, g5 or intel Macs. However, they say it takes a 1 gig or faster
processor...so the 867 may not work? If the website can tell its not a 1 gig
machine maybe that's the problem? Can she use some other computer to do the
registration? Or could you do the registration for her from your machine and
just put in her address/email info in the form?

Re: Thinking of buying a G5 dual for PR but quick question

2010-10-08 Thread bryan adkins
That was kind of my thinking (granted I am not a computer guru but I
do know a few things). I was also thinking I could disable one of the
CPU's (which I think is an option since it does boot to the apple logo
but just hangs there) and just run a single core which I have helped a
friend out with before. anyways thanks for the response, and this
group is awesome lot's o info!

I'm totally guessing here but if it is indeed a DP, and not a DC,
running one CPU at 2.0 GHz and the other at a different speed would not
be my first choice of 'fixes.'

I would think that a replacement single core 2.0 GHz would be the safest
way to go, maybe someone with more experience can elaborate on your options.

Re: Thinking of buying a G5 dual for PR but quick question

2010-10-08 Thread bryan adkins
I just need to get my hands on it and see what will happen when I do
the firmware command and run with a single processor, and as for
switching the processor I will just go the route of new dual's with
same model number if above doesn't work and for the thermal
calibration I do have my hands on the correct copy for this machine.

I remember reading how you can modify the firmware with a semi-
permanent Open Firmware command so that only one CPU is used, and this
may take care of any sleep issues related to a bad CPU?
